How to get a good Director of Football in FM 2013

I have been receiving quite a few questions about the Director of Football in FM 2013 via email and through the social networks, so I decided to provide the answers here for further reference. This is one of the key staff members in a professional football club and I am extremely happy that SI decided to include this position in Football Manager 2013. Now I will try to list the essential attributes for a Director of Football in FM 2013.

The main job of the Director of Football, at least in real life, is to find and buy new players for the club. That said, here are the first two essential attributes:

  • Judging Player Ability
  • Judging Player Potential

When signing a Director of Football in FM 2013 you might also want to consider his scouting knowledge, the more nations he knows the better job he can do. So, another two key things to look at are…

  • Scouting Knowledge
  • Adaptability

The Director of Football can also negotiate incoming and outgoing transfers, so I think there are a few more attributes that would be useful:

  • Determination
  • Motivating

Last but not least, the Director of Football should be able to read your tactical preferences and bring players that would suit your way of playing the game. So another useful attribute is…

  • Tactical Knowledge

I have recently started a new save with Everton and I signed this former World Champion as a Director of Football: (to0 bad the club doesn’t have too much money to spend on transfers…)

So, that’s what I think can make a good Director of Football in FM 2013. But that’s just my two cents, feel free to add your views in the comments. Also, if you find this post useful, please share it with your mates on the social networks.

Attributes are from 1 to 20, 1 being the worst and 20 being the best.

Ok like when trying to sign a Director Of Football what would be the perfect rating for Adaptability, 1 being the worst and 20 being the best.

What roles do you end up allowing your DF to take over? I’ve mainly only had success with him finding exits for players and not too much on bringing in people. Granted, I haven’t played that deep into a season.

Do you have any suggestions on roles or how best to position the DF for success?

I also notice that it doesn’t appear the the DF can manipulate the budget to slide salary money over to transfer money — is that correct?

I tried to let him do everything except finalising transfers and things went pretty well, found good players. I don’t know if he can adjust the transfer/wage budgets or not.

Overall I think the best way is to let him handle outgoing transfers and keep the signings entirely in your hands, but if you don’t have too much time for scouting you can let the DoF handle those as well.

I wouldn’t have thought he’d need scouting or PA ratings. I’d’ve thought he’d depend on your scouting framework just like I do.

You are not entirely wrong there, but not entirely right either :) I have noticed my DoF trying to sign players that were not on my shortlist, or not even scouted by one of the scouts at the club. The manager can’t go around the world looking for players but a DoF often does that, at least in real life that is.

I would imagine the closer his tactics match the ones you intend to play, the better he’ll be as well. I guess a lot depends on exactly how deep they’ve gone into all the different aspects of the DoF.

I don’t think his tactical preferences are too important, he tends to bring players based on your preferred tactic, not his.

Johnny and everyone else associated with this site can only give you info that has worked for them. The best thing that any person who plays cm/fm can do is have a tinker and see what works for you, there is no bible only guidance from other people who find things that work for them. To truly enjoy the full fm experience it is best that you play the game your way after all you are supposed to be the manager of your chosen club, therefore if you lack the confidence to take your chosen club and get them to play your style of football and employ the kind of staff that fits in with IT then you may have wrongly been employed as the teams manager lol.(please note the above is my opinion and if you think about it pretty god dam relevant, my advice PLAY THE GAME YOUR WAY and be mindfull that we are lucky to have these guys on hand to seek advice from…. Drunken rant over with.. Big up FM STORY !!

I agree, we’re just providing advice but every player must think with his own head and play the game whichever way he or she wants to play it.

How did you get it so you can see the knowledge staff members have of countries? When I view a staff member’s profile it looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/3lfBv.png

    Thanks in advance!

Nevermind, it was because I was playing with it windowed.

Just realised I didn’t say thank’s for the post, as I wasn’t sure what made a good DOF.

Any Idea how «smart» the AI for the Director of football is? The MLS has a lot of rules that other leagues don’t (Salary Cap, DPs, Dev players, Roster limits, draft and trades, etc.) Would the director of football be able to take those things into account or is the AI engine pretty generic?

I ask because the «Classic» game does not take any of those things into account which makes it a very unrealistic game for MLS.

The DoF seems to bring players based on his valuation of your squad’s weaknesses, that’s what I have noticed so far. Understanding the MLS rules might be too much for a human though, so I guess it would be too much to ask for an AI robot. But you can’t know for sure until you try, can you?

Used these attributes to grab Damien Comolli as my DoF. This was helpful, cheers mate.

Comolli is one of the best in the world, good choice!

In game agree with Commoli , but in RL he destroyed Liverpool with shit !! Anyways good article … Any advice for Head of Youth Development , not a full article just the stats ..

          18 декабря, 2012 at 16:45

I think a good Head of Youth Development should have high «working with youngsters», plus judging player potential (and ability, but potential is more important in this case).

Who do you believe to be the best Director of Football in the game?

    • Johnny Karp

There are quite a few good ones, I’d recommend Comolli or Arnesen, if you can afford their wages.

Who is the best DOF in the MLS or that I can entice to come to the MLS, I have John Doyle now. His contract is up so I just want to make sure he’s good.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Managers who are celebrating :)

    Thanks,
    Mahlon

I don’t know who is the best DoF in the MLS, but you can use this guide to find him, that’s why I wrote it.
