Torquay United: Life on the Riviera

Hello Friends and welcome to my new story (yes another one) featuring Torquay United based on the English Riviera in Devon and what a spectacular place it seems to be!

Having taken control of the team the first thing I did was to assess my staff and determine if it was time to package out any of them. The only one I decided to release was Coach Steve Taylor and as for the Scouts I decided to keep them both on. I’ll be placing job adverts for both coaches and scouts as we are a bit shorthanded in each area.

It was time then to review the players I was to be in charge of. As usual I started out with an assistant manager team report whose assessment determined we needed to strengthen the midfield but otherwise we had sufficient coverage.

The feedback I received I’ll take under advisement as I think there are better players to be targeted than those suggested. Additionally, I feel we need at least another 4 players to come in to bolster up other positions as well.

As for this seasons expectations I promised the board a top half finish and for that they allocated £20,000 for transfers and £19,000 for salaries. With the help of staff meetings and additional team reports I actually brought in seven new players though as you can see there isn’t  too much depth to release anyone.

As my audience is very knowledgable you are most likely familiar with many of these players but here’s a couple that you may not have come across before.

Unknown New Zealander Shane Hooks was brought in for a DMC role as I liked his work rate and team work attributes and has not bad stamina either.

Striker Andrew Barrowman is already a journeyman at 24 years old and has played in almost all the lower English professional divisions but had his best season with Ross County in Scotland. Good finishing and composure drew my attention.

Here’s a player already in the squad and is valued the highest in the team at £150,000. Eunan has a scattering of pretty decent attributes but his dribbling and crossing could make him dangerous down that left flank. Let’s hope so!

Here the are the pre-season results. We got off to a great start but didn’t do so well against teams form higher divisions though morale stayed high as we went into August.

August Fixtures

Our opening game is at home to Chesterfield followed by the visist of Crystal Palace for a League Cup encounter.

So that’s it for now as I begin my journey on the English Riviera!

With 4 wins out of 7 friendlies..look like you need to keep improving your team, Kevin. I think Andrew Barrowman could be dangerous, from his stats. Good luck!

Kevin hope you do well and keep to the game,
What helps me on FM10 is having and good assistant manager,
Then finding a good tactic to start the season then you got it in the bag.

Hi Kevin, good to see you managing in League Two. What a challenge though, Torquay are a mediocre side in League 2 at best. Nice to see your punching well above your weight in the friendlies. That should set your side up nicely for a tough season. I wish you luck and look forward to following your journey.

Shame you didnt manage my local team! But I guess you didnt enjoy it so best of luck with this team!

I always found league 2 quite hard to get out of, but you have made some good signings and hopefully they will settle down well.

      Hi Ana
Yeah, I tested them out but in the end the bright lights, the sea air and the smell of fish and chips drew me to the coast. LOL!
      Thanks for your well wishes.

    Hi Zinedine Zaiddin
Not too worried baout those losses as thye were against better teams and I was suprised by those choices made by the AM. I’m hoping Barrowman can produce the goods.

    Hi Kyle T,
I’ll strive do me more consistent this time. I get bogged down by work and then lose interest. Hopefully my work challenges are behind me now.

    Hi Darren
Thanks for the well wishes. Living next to Lake Ontario doesn’t have the same appeal as the English Channel so I chose Torquay to remind me of my childhood days at the seaside. I started with a Fluid strategy for pre season but have switched to Rigid for the regular season.

Torquay is an amazing place, I’ve been there a few times. I like starting in league 2 its a good challenge. (I’m Macclesfield at the moment). Good signings too, I like Barrowman and Subotic they are great at this level, good luck with this game.

    Hi Kevin…
Benyon played very well there! Is he one of your best 11?
Looks like Barrowman is hiding his secret weapon. But it looks like he will make a big contribution to your torquay. Good luck with your new career. ;)

    Hi Laxeyman
My work bascially messed up the other story. I was too long away from it and just lost interest. I have a good feeling about this one as well. Thanks for your support.

    Hello Lye
Torquay is situated in the south west of England. Nice place. Thanks for your well wishes and I’m quite excited but this choice of team.

    Hi Sears,
Glad you are excited about it. I am too, though I’m not sure why the name and the scenery just got my «mojo» going :)
