Notts County Second Season — The Grand Finale

Here we are, the final dash towards the end of the season was about to begin. We had a painful month of March with lots of problems and some bad luck, so we were down in 2nd place at the end of it. We had two games in hand though and the team definitely looked better in the last games, so I hoped that we could get promotion pretty soon.

The next game was at home with 12th placed Millwall, a team that we defeated quite heavily in December, 4-1. Andreev and Szalai scored in the first half to finish off two nice team moves. We played very well in the second half too but we missed the chances and almost got punished by Millwall on counter attacks.

We had another home game coming up, a tough one with 4th placed Southend. I was pleased with the team’s performance in the first half, we hit the woodwork twice before Kamil Grosicki finally scored after a corner kick. We continued to play well in the second half and Sabrin Sburlea made it 2-0. It was one of the best games that we played this season, a superb display that could have brought us a lot more goals.

We needed one more win to secure the League One title and we had a good chance of getting it away at 16th placed Walsall. We missed quite a few chances though and I was afraid that we would get only a goalless draw. Sburlea didn’t agree, he finally scored in the 77th minute!

That was it, the League One title was ours! It’s been a long journey but everybody was happy, we achieved a very good result considering that the media prediction at the start of the season was that we would finish 7th.

    Congratulations on gaining promotion! Fantastic win over Stockport too.Do you stay with the same tactic throughout the season and just tweak it occassionaly depending on the opposition?

      Thanks mate, have a good holiday! :)

      Thanks Kev. The tactic is still the 4-4-2 I published here but now I’m at version 2.6, I made a few minor tweaks. Yes, I used it throughout the season, the changes that I make from game to game are related to the opposition instructions.

      Yeah, Huddersfield have a pretty strong team. I definitely hope to be able to get promoted to the Premier League but it surely will be tough.

    Intersting, I should pay more attention to the pre match set up. :)
    How do you go about chosing players when in the lower leagues especially as they maybe not well known. Do you use the filters looking at a particualar attribute(s) say for example stamina. Sorry for all the questions but your management skills are so intriguing

    I’m about to start a game with Swindon Town !

      Don’t worry, you can ask as many questions as you want, I don’t mind. If you have a good assistant manager you can try asking him to set up the opposition instructions, sometimes it works. I do use filters when searching for players. For example if I’m looking for a centre back I’ll set filters for heading, marking, anticipation, and so on. I also want centre backs with high pace and acceleration because I’m using a high defensive line. You also have to pay attention to the mental attributes like determination, they are pretty important too. I guess I should make a post about the most important attributes for every position… Good luck with Swindon, keep us up to date with your progress! And if you have questions please ask. ;)

    Congrats on getting the mighty pies into the championship. You had a very good season. I myself just missed out loosing on pens in the play-off final. I noticed that you only have Schmeichel left of the original team, how long do you think you will be able to keep him, as I have had offers from Juventus and Inter Milan trying to poach him.

      @Sonny
      Thanks for the advice mate.
      @Madaboutpies
      Thanks mate. I didn’t have any offers for Schmeichel so far, maybe if he does well this season there will be some interest for him. However, I’m quite satisfied with his contribution so I don’t think I’ll sell him unless there will be a very good offer. That’s too bad about the shootout loss, that always hurts. Good luck in the next season!
