Football Manager 2013 Preview: It is quite exciting!

Before you ask, I’ll make this perfectly clear right away: I have been offered the possibility and the honour to play Football Manager 2013 ahead of release, alongside other fan site owners and journalists. But make no mistake, I didn’t play the final game, just a beta version that still has a big «work in progress sign» all over it. However, it does give a good idea of how FM 2013 is going to be.

I won’t bother you with all the new features, you already know all about those from the continuous flow of FM 13 news. I’ll just point out a few of the aspects that I found the most important:

Staff responsibilities — this is a major feature in my view because it really gives you the option to delegate almost all of the tasks at the club. I admit that I was impressed with the director of football. Just an example: I sold one of my three keepers on transfer deadline day and the DoF immediately came with an offer for another keeper. I cancelled that offer and he came with another one within half an hour. I cancelled that one too and we kept playing like that until midnight on transfer deadline day (which is also quite exciting in the new game).

Transfers and contracts — everything is more realistic in there, including the tax system. Actually that one is quite complicated because it fully mirrors real life tax regimes. For instance, if you manage an UK team you will see that are various tax rates depending on the wages: 0% for wages up to 8,000 quid per year or 40% for wages ranging from 34,000 pounds to 150K per year. And that happens in each of the countries I’ve verified (mostly EU countries).

Training — the revamp of the training system is excellent, that side of the game is a lot easier to manage and it makes quite a bit more sense than the previous versions. No more looking around for training schedules, you won’t need those now, you will just have to focus on the important aspects.

Match engine — this is an important part of the game and I can assure you that it does look better and more realistic than FM 2012. The stadiums look better, the ball bounces more naturally, the players look better and move in a more realistic manner. There are a few glitches in the beta, mostly concerning goalkeepers from what I could see, but I’m sure those will be ironed out before release date.

Bottom line: I’m sure you will enjoy playing Football Manager 2013, it’s a great game and a must have for any fan of the series. As you know the FM 2013 release date is November 2nd and if you pre-order the game trough our store you will receive access to a beta version two weeks before that release date!  Click and pre-order Football Manager 2013 for just 27 pounds!

Unfortunately I am not allowed to publish any screen shots from the review copy of the game but I have a better offer for you: if you want to know something specific from the game I can check and give you an answer.

    Lucky!

Who did you play with? And the skin, is it green or white?

      12 октября, 2012 at 18:08

I played around with Arsenal, Barcelona, Napoli and Spurs. The skin is mostly white, with some transparent chunks between the various panels. It looks slick ;)

LLM Grade System, do you can say something about it?

That’s a real honour to have been chosen to get access to a review copy of the game. It’s a sign of the high regard held for you within the Football Manager community.

The Director of Football certainly sounds like he does a good job based on what you said, which should make selling those players you don’t want anymore so much easier to shift. Nothing worse than a player sitting in the reserves, sucking up wages, who you just can’t sell, even for free. Hopefully that will cut down on the number of awkward players like that.

    I have couple of questions:

From what you’ve seen so far, do the free kicks look to be more realistic, because that has probably been one of the poorest areas in FM12. From anywhere on the pitch, sometimes they have frankly ludicrous. You expect some poor free kicks, but consistently doing stupid stuff was annoying.

The other area is throw-ins, which have also been terrible at times. Seeing a player actually manage to throw the ball straight out down the touchline was a surprise. lol. With throw-ins, it’s more that the receiving player so often just stands still in a way that just wasn’t real.

Please tell me that they’ve managed to make these two areas a bit more realistic.

The DoF does a great job in getting rid of unwanted players, especially when you give him the «sell or release» order for a player. They also find good loan deals for youngsters.
Free kicks are definitely looking better, there is a fair share of goals coming out of those, from what I’ve noticed the goals from set pieces ratio is pretty close to real life football.
As for the throw ins, I haven’t noticed any major flaws with those.

        12 октября, 2012 at 18:34

There is only one slight downside to them fixing free kicks, which is I’ll have to get used to conceding from more than I have been. lol.

As long as the errors that players make are believable then it’s good. In FM12 at times I’ve been left wondering, even when it’s allowed my team to score.

All sounds great Johnny, especially the director of football…sounds like he will make transfers far more realistic.

Trust me, having a DoF is quite helpful, mostly with outgoing transfers but a good one can spot good signings as well.

What about the infamous corner exploit, did you have the impression they fixed it?
Another question, did you try the classic mode?

    • Johnny Karp

      12 октября, 2012 at 19:29

Corners seem pretty realistic, I haven’t tried to push the envelope there though in order to find a particular flaw. I haven’t tried the classic mode yet.

    Hi Johnny.

It must be a real honour to be able to test all by yourself the beta version of the world’s best game. I’m jealous to be honest!

My question is the following: The FM 2012 was really fun but it had a really bad thing: The game did not progress really fast. What I mean, is that it took me quite an amount of time to just finish one season. With that in mind, I want to ask if there has been any kind of improvement about the speed of the game.

    • Johnny Karp

      12 октября, 2012 at 20:37

It is an honour indeed but, with all modesty, I guess it’s a deserved one.
As for your question, you can try the FM Classic mode, they say you can get through a whole season in around 10 hours of game play. It should be faster in the full mode as well, since you can delegate quite a few tasks to the staff, mostly the director of football.

Well done mate on getting the beta use, you’ve done a lot for this game promoting this website, making guides and such that’s its nice to see that they’ve noticed and offered you this opportunity. Only one week to go for the rest of us.
I wanted to know whether you found the one combined match day panel better than the separate ones? I’ll come back with more questions later but at the moment my brains not working :)

    • Johnny Karp

      12 октября, 2012 at 20:38

Thanks mate. Actually you have both sets of panels, they are separated. The updates panel shows you advice from the assistant and important events in the match and throughout the competition, while you can use the individual panels to view formations, ratings and so on.

Could I ask for a personal favour, Johnny? If you have time, could you check Joel Valencia’s price tag for me? I really hope it hasn’t risen.

          13 октября, 2012 at 22:34

Value is 350K in January 2013.

    Okay Johnny,

You are slowly but surely convincing me to remove my Visa card despite last months farewell :)

By the way being selected for beta testing soldifies what we already know, that you are highly thought of not by us but the whole Football Manager community. Goods for you and great update as always.

      12 октября, 2012 at 20:31

      that should read…..

«not only by us but the whole Football Manager community»

I gotta remember to enlarge the screen when I’m leaving comments or get more powerful glasses :(

How does the difficulty compare to previous FM games

    • Johnny Karp

      13 октября, 2012 at 10:12

Every new version of the game seems more difficult when you first start playing it, but I don’t think that will prove real this time either.

  13. Bill Okpalor

    13 октября, 2012 at 19:36

Have u seen any talented youngsters yet?

  14. Aaron

    13 октября, 2012 at 19:40

Very deserved, I can imagine you were quite excited when you were found out! What’s the new scouting system like? Is the chief scout a welcome addition?

    • Johnny Karp

      13 октября, 2012 at 20:51

The chief scout is useful because you can have him take care of sending the scouts all over the world and then he will filter the reports from the scouts. The big plus is that they give ratings for each role and not only on positions as in FM 12, that’s a massive improvement in my view.

  15. PeeDub

    13 октября, 2012 at 21:46

Does scouting the opposition result in any *style* information about the other team?

    Counter attacking/attacking/etc.
    Short/direct passing/etc.
    Pressing/standing off/etc.
    Etc.

    14 октября, 2012 at 00:08

Hi mate, first of all, congratulations, you deserve it. And i’m curious about a player, he has a major improvement last year and is one of the most promising players in Argentina, although he is 22 i think. Juan Manuel Sánchez Miño, from Boca Juniors, could you check him out and tell me if he looks good? Thanks mate!

  17. Vaibhav

    14 октября, 2012 at 13:04

has Fernando Torres ratings been dipped from FM2012? :-P

  18. Steve

    14 октября, 2012 at 13:51

nice preview mate, DoF does sound cool..you say that the DoF kept coming to you with offers for more ‘keepers; is that because you’d set him to negotiate transfer fees for first team transfers, as i believe is an option? or are they always just coming to you with potential transfers?

also, bit of a specific question, but what is Liverpool’s starting transfer budget? usually only get around £10m, often less, but after loaning out Carrol amongst other high earners and not really replacing, I would’ve hoped it’d be a bit higher this season (also how much spare wage bill do they begin with for negotiation, as you can probably tell i’m gonna start with Liverpool and wanna know what I’ve got to work with!)

    thanks in advance!

    Steve

    • Johnny Karp

      14 октября, 2012 at 14:58

I had set the DoF to handle incoming transfers, but I kept the right to confirm the deals. Liverpool have between 3 and 5 mil in the transfer budget, depending on expectations, and around 100K per week spare wage budget.

    14 октября, 2012 at 16:34

Any significant differences in player abilities? HOW IS HULK??

Also, how current is the transfer information? Does Real Madrid have Modric, for instance?

    • Johnny Karp

      14 октября, 2012 at 17:22

Hulk is as good as ever, no worries :)
Transfers are updated, every deal that was made until the end of the transfer window is reflected in the game.

  20. Vaibhav

    14 октября, 2012 at 18:47

One more question is loaning players out to non-playable leagues still of no use?

    • Johnny Karp

      14 октября, 2012 at 18:54

I can’t possibly know that. However, such moves were useful under certain circumstances, like when you wanted a player to gain EU citizenship for instance.

    14 октября, 2012 at 19:07

I read again your article and watched again all the videos that Miles posted and I have some questions. My first question has to do with the role of the assistant manager. With the addition of the DoF, the Chief Scout and the Ηead of Youth Development, could someone say that the role of the assist.manager is no longer of particular importance?

The training has changed a lot, from what I read but in which way has it changed? Do I have to forget the old version with the bars?

Last but not least, is the last day of the transfer period so exciting as I believe it will be?

    Thank you in advance.

P.S Yes, you totally deserved and earned the privillege of testing the beta version and I sincerelly hope that this website grows even more.

    • Johnny Karp

      14 октября, 2012 at 19:25

      1. The assistant is still quite important as he can handle training, press conferences, friendlies.
      2. Training is a lot simpler now, basically there will be no more separate training regimes. You can choose a general focus and also individual training for new positions/roles/moves.
      3. Yes, it is quite exciting. I sold two lads and bought one on transfer deadline day, plus got all sorts of questions from the media every half hour (game time, of course).

How is the AI transfers are they improved

    • Johnny Karp

      15 октября, 2012 at 04:59

I guess so but it’s too early to tell. The biggest transfer I’ve noticed was City buying Fellaini, not unrealistic at all :)

Can you please tell me the state of Birmingham’s finances and what are Butland & Redmonds stats like???

Oh also does it state that they are looking for a new owner??

    cheers

    • Johnny Karp

      15 октября, 2012 at 15:33

There is no chairman at the club and the club info screen says «will listen to offers». The financial balance reads 2.3 million in the black. As for Butland and Redmond, the goalie has 4.5 stars for potential ability while the right midfielder is one of the best players in the squad (3.3 CA, 4.5 PA).

      • tristybabes

        16 октября, 2012 at 10:20

Thanks, also is there any players that stand out to you at all in the game ie, wonderkid or peak player, and how’s Owen Hargreaves looking is he knackered & free?? lol

        • Johnny Karp

          16 октября, 2012 at 13:27

You have to be a bit patient, we’ll be releasing a shortlist with potential wonderkids as soon as the beta comes out. As for Hargreaves, he’s got very good mental attributes but he lacks on the physical side, especially speed. But I guess he would be a good signing for many clubs.

          • tristybabes

Are ‘tax havens’ modeled in the game? IE Monaco, Liechenstin etc? Do those clubs (AFC Monaco, San Marino Calcio & FC Vaduz) playing in other nations’ leagues have a separate tax rate?

For instance, do San Marino players get taxed less than players from another Serie C team?

    • Johnny Karp

      18 октября, 2012 at 14:33

I have checked and there are differences. A San Marino player would get 375 p/w out of a 500 p/w wage, while players at other clubs in the same division would get 275 out of 500.

Same goes for Monaco, 875 out of a 1000 p/w wage, while at other clubs players get 800 out of 1000.

I guess the differences would be even greater for higher wages as those countries don’t have flat tax rates as far as I know.
