FM Questions? Ask Miles!

Hello my friends, I’m safely back at home from the trip to Shanghai… I’m still a bit dizzy because of the time difference and the rather long flight but I hope to be back in shape soon. Enough about me, let’s move on to the topic of the post. I asked Miles Jacobson, studio director at Sports Interactive (the company that makes the Football Manager game), to give us an exclusive interview and he kindly agreed.

I have several questions for him but I thought it would be good to give you a chance to submit your questions and then make the interview. So there you go, you will have a few days to submit your questions, then I will have to select some of them to be included in the interview along with my questions. Let’s see what you’ve got! :)

P.S.: In other news, I am happy to announce that we will have another predictions contest starting here soon! It will probably include the Premier League and the Champions League, stay tuned to find out more! ;)

    You know? in FM it’s very difficult to sign non-EU players. Transfers are always canceled by a work permit. And for the clubs in the lower leagues it’s impossible to do. Yet in reality there are many non-EU players in lower leagues.
    My question is: Why hire non-EU players is very difficult in the FM? and actually what is the criteria allowed by FM for non-EU players to play in England?

    Hopefully, FM 2011 has an easier work permit.

      @Java
      Actually FM reflects the real situation pretty well, it’s very hard for non-EU players to get work permits in real life too. There are a few non-EU players in the lower leagues, that’s true, but if you check many of them also hold EU passports that allow them to play without requiring a work permit. Here is a pretty good answer I found somewhere on the web:

      Premier League clubs have almost complete freedom to sign whatever number and category of players they wish. There is no team or individual salary cap, no squad size limit, no age restrictions other than those applied by general employment law, no restrictions on the overall number of foreign players, and few restrictions on individual foreign players — all players with EU nationality, including those able to claim an EU passport through a parent or grandparent, are eligible to play, and top players from outside the EU are able to obtain UK work permits. The only area where the Premier League’s player registration rules are more restrictive than those of some other football leagues, such as those of those of Belgium and Portugal, is that academy level non-EU players have little access to English football by law. Also, clubs competing in the Champions League or UEFA Cup must comply with UEFA’s player-eligibility rules for those competitions.
      In response to concerns that clubs were increasingly passing over young British players in favour of signing less-expensive foreign players, in 1999, the Home Office tightened its rules for granting work permits to players from countries outside of the European Union.Currently a non-EU player applying for the permit must have played for his country in at least 75% of its competitive ‘A’ team matches for which he was available for selection during the previous two years, and his country must have averaged at least 70th place in the official FIFA world rankings over the previous two years. If a player does not meet those criteria, the club wishing to sign him may appeal if they believe that he is a special talent and «able to contribute significantly to the development of the game at the top level in the UK.»

        Okay, thanks for the explanation, it’s quite long. :D So, only a super-talented players from outside EU can play in UK?. I must be more selective then.

    How much improvement has went into the new game for the 3D match engine, will it look more realistic?

    Hi Johnny, I have no question for Miles. I’m quite happy with Football Manager as it’s by far the best managing gameing experience available. However, I just set up a new email so how do I unsuscribe to your posts on my old email address as I’ve allready suscribed to your posts on my new one. Thanks.

    One more question…
    whether there will be improvement in the national teams in FM 2011? I mean, like Germany and Japan will have real players who play for the country. National teams of Germany and Japan do not contain their star players, but contains the players that are not real.
    When all was resolved FM 2011 would be much more interesting.

    one question which is the same as Java question, will they be real players in the Germany and japan team as i hope SI will resolve the licensing issues for this teams and other teams that have the same problems.

    Will Leigh Griffiths of Dundee become Left Footed because he is in real life and it is pretty annoying that it is not represented as that. Also will there be any changes to the press conferences because I find them rather stale after a while and send my assistant afterwords.

    Will the transfer rumours section be improved on as it always selects players i haven’t shown an interest in or even scouted ?

    I would like to know what role if any agents will play the new version. I suppose you wouldnt be able to straight swap a player because of agents fees but i wonder what other impact they will have,

    Also wondering if there will be any changes on managers wages, im on £300,000 a week at barcelona and can do absolutely nothing with it. I’d like to be able to buy shares or invest in the club or something like that. probably too complicated though, just a thought. :-)

    Thanks to all of those who have submitted questions so far. Just a slight warning though, Miles will probably choose not to reveal too much about FM 2011 because it hasn’t been officially announced yet. So it would be great to add other types of questions too.

    With so many players on FM how do you find the time to watch each of them and gain accurate attributes on each player because you would need to employ thousands (possibly tens of thousands) to effectively do this surely!?! :)

    My question for Miles:

    What’s your opinion about ‘My Football Manager Story’ blog ( your blog Johnny :-D ) and it’s influence on the Football Manager community?

    Sorry, that my question hasn’t anything to do with the game, but his opinion would be nice to hear :-)

      @Sears
      That’s a good question actually, thanks! :)
      @Matthew
      Thanks for the question, you will be surprised to find out how many people are involved in the research for the game, people from all over the world ;)

      Thanks Lye, you can submit as many questions as you want but I will have to choose since I won’t be able to keep Miles all day long answering :)

    Hi Johnny, I don’t have any questions, but it will be interesting to see what Miles says. Great that you’re having another contest too, that should be good :)

    My question is more Argentinian football orientated:

    Will at some point included in FM situations like fans throwing a stone to the referee, managers threatened by hooligans, bribes to refeeres, positive doping, players that divide a team because of a girlfriend and all that kind of stuff that happens in real football?

    Some of the criticisms aimed at Football Manager has been around the limited number of features, such as little or no communication between fans, and players such as informing them that you expect to finish mid table etc, is this area of football manager being improved? And second question is, are their plans involved towards improving the static league reputation issue.

    Hi johnny,do you recommend any defenders for Bristol Rovers? We have got a not so good transfer budget so players over the value of 100k wont work in are system.

    @Hils,
    I take it you must have a few scouts at your club right? Send them to the u18’s and reserves league as you may be able to pick up a few decent players from there

    • hils

      24 августа, 2010 at 21:29

      i do have some scouts at the club who are looking for players between 24-28

  23. Sears

    24 августа, 2010 at 21:41

    @Hilss,
    that’s good. I tend to send my scouts to different countries to look at players between the age of 15-21. How are you doin in ur Bristol game?

    • hils

      25 августа, 2010 at 08:10

      we are doing ok in are pre-season fixtures but i think we are suffering with are slim transfer budget and low amount of players.
