FM 2013 Training Guides: How to get good coaches in FM 2013

So, you have got good FM 2013 players, cheap or free, or maybe some exciting wonderkids already, but in order to achieve success in FM 2013 you will need a strong coaching staff. Today I will show you how to maximise the effect of training through the abilities of your coaches.

So, you have got good FM 2013 players, cheap or free, or maybe some exciting wonderkids already, but in order to achieve success in FM 2013 you will need a strong coaching staff. Today I will show you how to maximise the effect of training through the abilities of your coaches. FM 2013 training is simpler than what we were used to from the previous version but you will still need good coaches, nothing has changed there.

My recommendation is to have at least 9 coaches: two fitness coaches, two goalkeeping coaches and 5 general coaches. That is because I prefer assigning a coach to a single training category, the one he is best at.

Here are the attributes that make the difference between the weak coaches and the good FM 2013 coaches:

Common attributes for all training categories

  • determination
  • level of discipline
  • motivating

These three attributes should all be the highest possible, try setting the filters to 10 each when searching for coaches and then gradually increase if you get too many interested coaches.

Now the specific attributes for each training category:

Fitness training

Strength — fitness

Aerobic — fitness

General training

Tactics — tactical

Ball control — technical (primary attribute) + mental

Defending — defending (primary) + tactical

Attacking — attacking (primary) + tactical

Shooting — technical (primary) + attacking

Goalkeeping training

Shot stopping — goalkeepers

Handling — goalkeepers

As you can notice these have not changed from FM 2012, so if you have already learned the trade you will surely assemble a good coaching team in FM 2013. After getting all the coaches you need there still remains something to be done: assigning the coaches to the respective categories.

Go to Training > Coaches and assign each of the coaches to a specific category, according to their abilities, as shown in the screen shot below.

On a small club, you can`t have that many coaches. What do you think would be a good set up for a club with 3 coachs, 1 gk coach and no fitness coach (the board won`t allow it!!!)

There’s not much you can do with that few coaches, just assign them the best way you can to get the most stars out of each training category.

I usually sign a proper goalkeeping coach, someone who can act as a typical fitness coach and then the other two coaches+ass.man cover the rest. If you manage to get skilled staff, you can easily have 2, 2.5 or even 3* in each category

Unfortunately I don’t have FM 2013 yet, but with FM 2012 I usually combine GK Handling/Shot Stopping, Strength/Attribute and Shooting/Attacking in that order of priority.

In lower leagues I find that focusing on fitness and goalkeeping seems to do be important. I would sign coaches to get most stars in those catagories.

I agree, the physical side of the game is important in the lower leagues, so fitness is a priority.

Good guide Johnny, it covers all the areas needed to get your training in order. I’ll bookmark this just in case I forget the key skills for each training role.

    I`ve just noticed that you recommended 9 coaches, but the sum is actually 11! «two fitness coaches, two goalkeeping coaches and 7 general coaches» 2 + 2 + 7 = 11 !!!

Whoops, my mistake :) I will correct it now, there should be 5 general coaches.

Something I have always wondered about. Is there any important distinction between «First Team Coach» and «Coach»?

    • Johnny Karp

      28 октября, 2012 at 08:42

The important difference is that the first team coach only trains senior players while the coach can also work with the players in the youth team.

I see 13 is different. In 12 my board room would tell me how many first team coaches were advised and how many coaches. The thing was there was no youth team. I was running MLS teams, but I see in 13 there is no recommended number for First team coaches any more (at least with the team I am playing now).

You are right, there is no recommended number of First Team coaches, I guess they all go under «coaches» now.

I’ve been wondering if I should care about the «Staff role» area on a coach. The reason I ask is that I’m playing in a lower league and I have a head of youth development coach that has a full bar in that area but is about 50% full in coaching, however he would make a good coach for my team right now. Should I offer him a new contract as a coach instead?

Anyway, what stats would you look for in a head of youth development staff member?

Head of Youth Development is like scout and coach in one person, so you need coaching skills and good scouting skills plus high «Working With Youngsters» rating

You can have the DoF look for youth players, so you don’t necessarily need to have a Head of Youth Development with great scouting skills. But it’s good if he has those, indeed.

It looks like «coaches» only work with 1st team and reserves, and no longer with youth teams ( Under 21s / Under 19s ) and there’s no longer «1st team coaches»,. So you need to hire Under 21s and Under 19s if you want to get good training for your younger players. Of course you can put them in the first team or reserves to get better training, if you cant afford yout team coaches.

hello, i need 1 thing to ask here regarding GK coach. I play Man.Utd, and it says there we suppose to have 2 GK coach, but apparently one is for youth team. So practicaly I only have one GK coach for senior team. And apparently i cant either ask the Board about this since the system blockade the Board Conversation about getting more coaches. Any advise? TQ

You can try to get a general coach with good skills on coaching goalkeepers or wait for the board to allow more GK coaches. Until then, just use your current GK coach on both goalkeeping training categories.

TQ John. Another thing is, there are some new job in the game now, such as General Manager and Director of Football (if i m not mistaken). What do they do exactly, and should I hire ones, since in my game the job are still vacant. And do they involve or contribute in training too? TQ

Hi John, need to ask you about somethng again. When my players jump into a match game, most of the time, many of them always look nervous, very nervous, or anxious, by their body language. What do you think things that make them look that way, and what should i do to prevent them becoming like that? TQ

    • Johnny Karp

I guess that’s a confidence issue, depends on results and on your team talks. Generally winning games and good performances keep players happy and you also should try to encourage them through your team talks.

Before the match you need to tell your young or new players that you have faith in them or that there is no pressure on them today which will give them «Relaxed» status. If they do not perform well, at half time tell them they were unlucky and that it was a good effort. They will then have the status «Looked to gain confidence» or «Looked motivated».

They will still get anxious or nervous despite all this but much of it is down to being new to the team and they have not settled in and blended with the squad. Instead of playing new players immediately, if you intend to play them in the first team, you should make them available for the reserves but keep them on the first team screen so that they don’t get mad that you put them in the reserves or unsettled more because you changed their squad status. Also if you buy many players at once your team blend will be awful, so try to buy one or two and gradually change the team. Try not to get rid of your captains and senior players because they have the effect of bossing morale and team spirit when they are on the pitch, the youngsters look up to them during games. For example they may say in their Information screen «feels that x player controls the defence well» and that player will typically have high determination/aggression/composure/bravery (an ideal ball winning midfielder!) It may even be worth keeping and fielding a senior player who is past their peak simply because they have this ability to dictate the spirit of the team if you have many new/young players on the field.

Hello John I have been experiencing a glitch in setting the coaches’ specific category recently.
Every time after i have set the category that they were responsible for, it would swap back to distributing their categories averagely. It really annoys me coz i have to set everything again every week.

Any idea how do u fix this?

    • Johnny Karp

Sorry, I haven’t encountered that glitch myself so I don’t know how you would be able to fix it. Are you sure you have installed the latest patch?

Never hear do of that either, maybe try not having your assistant sort training in staff responsibilities if he currently is.

when’s the best time to find good coaches? Whenever I search I never seem to find anyone to get excited about. I’m managing Falkirk by the way…
