Dan: Rangers — Not What I Expected…

Hi there!

Welcome to the final episode of my Rangers story, yes the final episode.

Firstly, don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere it’s just the unthinkable has happened — I’ve been SACKED! Now many of you may be thinking ‘How did you get sacked? You were doing so well’ and I can answer that with some screenshots so here they are:

Previous Results

Remember these? The good times, when Rangers were winning pretty much every game under my management (with the exception of the Champions League of course). Well all good things have to come to an end so here’s what happened next:

November (1st 2 games)

Not too bad, I mean an expected loss against Manchester Utd and then a well fought win against Dundee Utd. After this though I’m not sure what happened:

November (the rest)

I’m not sure looking at them now that this deserves a sacking, these aren’t disastrous results but they are pretty poor by the Old Firms standards. In the end though it was the position in the league that cost me my job in my opinion.

We fell 5 points behind Celtic but I did press continue once after getting sacked which gave Celtic a chance to make the gap even bigger!

So with that my brief stint in charge of Rangers comes to an end. Not the best way to start my time on FMS but this is the first time I’ve ever been sacked since I began playing the game in 2008 so hopefully I’ll learn from this and move on.

I’ve already got a team in mind for my next adventure and I promise it won’t be as controversial as Rangers, unless there are as many Liverpool fans as Celtic fans who read this website! Hope I didn’t just give you too much of a clue…

Well that’s all for now!

Thanks for reading!

They sacked you because you had a dip in form? Wow your former boss did not have much patience…I mean ok, you had an 8 point gap but let’s get serious, there were a lot of matches in which you could take the lead…Oh well, it doesn’t matter.

I’m looking forward to see you managing…a «blue coloured» team. Am I right?

I’m convinced that it was only a dip in form too! Maybe if they had actually given me something to work with in the transfer market rather than give me a £3million budget in October I could have added to our wafer thin squad. Anyway, I’m not too upset though, and yes, if that ‘blue coloured’ team has a beautiful pink away strip you may well be right…

      Sorry 5 points gap.

Kind of ironic that they sacked me and the gap got even bigger the day after I left.

Not happy Dan the team in my mind i just can’t follow. Distressed Liverpool fan :P

It may not be the team in your mind, that’s just the team I’m considering.

They didn’t even give you a chance mate, I mean you only lost against Hearts in the SPL? You are a good manager mate, don’t let a board as ruthless as those at Rangers get you down..

Ahh, thought it might have been Everton! Did you have to start a new save?

Looking forward to it either way :)

    • Dan

      13 августа, 2011 at 20:03

      Hey Excessive,

I think even managing Barcelona or Man Utd carries less pressure than being Rangers boss! And yes I did have to start a new save although I’m not 100% sure whether I’ll be choosing Everton, they’re just a team I fancied being. I’m gonna take a couple of days to think about it so that I make the right choice. :)

    Hey Dan
Thats unfortunate. I was not expecting that! Anyways, I think you might have fun managing that blue team. It will be a good challenge.

      13 августа, 2011 at 20:05

Join the club! It came totally out of the blue (no pun intended) ;)
There are a lot of teams in England and I might still choose someone else so don’t get your heart set on that blue team :)

That sucks dude. I’m glad Celtic have more patience when I manage them, I’m always expected to win the league with them and one game I finished 3rd, and didn’t win either of the cups, and still wasn’t sacked.

As for the results that got you sacked, well a loss against Hearts isn’t actually a massive surprise, Hearts are sometimes my bogey team when I’m Celtic, they’re good at beating me in key matches especially at times!

Oh, can I request that you manage Leicester.

    • Dan

      14 августа, 2011 at 21:02

      Hi MRDNRA,

Sounds like Celtic have a much nicer board that Rangers, I was doing pretty well in everything except the Champions League which I was never going to get far in the first season anyway.

As for the Hearts game it was pretty awful to watch and was our first ‘Scottish’ defeat so it hurt morale a lot. You can request that I manage Leicester and you must have a sixth sense my friend since they are already on my list of possibilities. :)

Looks like you were very harshly sacked Dan, can’t believe they’ve sacked you tbh, you weren’t doing badly at all! Sounds like you’re managing Everton next, not my favourite team (being a Liverpool fan!) but good luck anyway :)

    • Dan

      14 августа, 2011 at 20:59

      Hey Laxeyman,

I was harsh, unbelievably harsh! I think I may have misled people on the Everton thing though, I’m not 100% going to be them next but I’m going to make sure it’s an interesting choice.

Ouch that’s harsh. You were very unlucky to be sacked after what wa just a slight dip in form. The pressure at the Rangers or Celtic is ridiculous! Good luck with tour new story and I’ll be following! :)

    • Dan

      14 августа, 2011 at 20:56

      Hey Nicholas,

You’re right about the pressure, it was that intense that I was getting angry at the game for not letting me win…crazy! :)

Hey Dan, well when you mentioned the dreaded sack I imagined two or three losses in a row but not that!! They shouldn’t have dropped you so easily and I wouldn’t count this as a blemish in your FM record. As for your next game, play with whoever you want mate…readers can have an opinion but this is a game and not RL so son’t worry if not so many people support the team.

    • Dan

      14 августа, 2011 at 20:55

      Hi Darren,

This Rangers game has been a learning curve for me (never be Rangers again)! And I guess you’re right since I know a lot of people didn’t like Rangers but still took the time to read the story.

    Hi Dan
I can’t believe you have been sacked!
Thta seems to be very harsh indeed for such a small drop in form and I really do sypathize with you. I mean I was expecting to get sacked in my Cambridge game but this happening to you is not fair IMO.
Well, I look forward to your new story south of the border.

    • Dan

      14 августа, 2011 at 20:53

      Hi Kevin,

This is the harshest I’ve ever been treated on FM, it actually seems a little ridiculous really but I’ll bounce back, I’m sure of it! :)

    Unlucky mate

I can see you are choosing everton. As an Everton Fan it will be good to see how you go and compare my story to your story

    • Dan

      14 августа, 2011 at 20:53

      Hey Birdy,

I hope you won’t be disappointed if I don’t choose Everton since after taking a deeper look at possible clubs I’ve seen a couple of others I’d like to be too. I’m still yet to narrow things down to my favourite 2 clubs so it may well be another few days before I reveal my choice. Everton are up there with my favourites though.

Wow, highly unlucky Dan, and stupid board for sacking such an incredible manager just for a little drop in form. However, I do know of the harshness of the Rangers board, in one of my Aberdeen games Walter Smith was on a 14 match unbeaten run, but about 8 or 9 were draws and he was sacked, Rangers went on to lose their next three games before results picked up…

Anyway, good luck with Everton mate, if you can take them to Europe with the kind of budget they get in real-life it will be a massive achievement! :D

    • Dan

      14 августа, 2011 at 20:50

      Hey Sibo,

I’m still not 100% sure I’m going to pick Everton, I’m considering trying my hand at LLM since I did pretty good with Crewe last time I tried. Everton are a good team though and I think I could have a good go with them.

Dan you sure you want to have another team with no money? Though I must say, you could at least get a big payoff from selling one of the star players in your new team to fund a transfer spree :P

Shame you got sacked, the Rangers board expect an unbelievable amount of success on a shoestring budget

    • Dan

      15 августа, 2011 at 12:13

I’m not sure I want to be a team with no money, that’s why I’ve not set Everton in stone. I’m actually quite tempted to try Leicester since I’ve never been them before.

Hmm, that sacking was a bit rash, sorry to see that happening like that. Good luck with the next story!

Ah this was posted under a category I hadn’t bookmarked. I’ve sorted that now.

I think its shocking you got sacked. I did far worse with Celtic (in the league) during my first season of my current save and got kept on.

Anyway never mind, I’ll catch up on the rest of your blog soon.

Though I would like to say — remember this is why managing in Scotland, especially at one of the Old Firm is NOT easy. If you lose a couple of games you could be out of a job. In real life there are fans clamouring to get Neil Lennon and Ally McCoist sacked (though I think the majority realise we need to keep them).
