Wrexham: February 2012

Hello friends and welcome back to another update from The Racecourse Ground in Wrexham. Yes, with four days off  for Xmas it gives plenty of time to enjoy my favorite hobby.

As February came around it was time for our top of the table clash with Chesterfield and this game could really prove to be the title decider. Early pressure from the home side resulted in a goal after 15 minutes and we continued to struggle and absorb attacks with the woodwork being hit twice before the half hour mark. Late into the half we finally began to settle and a corner resulted in Oliver Nicholas heading in the equalizer in the 44th minute. A word in the ear of a few select players in the dressing room changed the dynamic of the game and we took the lead as Baheng caught the Cherterfield keeper off his line and chipped the ball neatly over him into an empty net. Jarvis who came on for Fofana added a third late on with a powerful strike following a precision clearance from McArdle. This was just the result we needed to boost confidence.

We stayed away for our next match which was at Bradford. It turned out to be a game of two halves, them in the first and us in the second. Wesley Ngo Baheng had the best chances of the game with a header going narrowly wide and an effort which thundered against the post but in the end neither side could find the back of the net.

The following game was at the Racecourse Ground with local side Hereford as the visiting team and who were 6th place in the table. After an uninspiring first half Nathaniel Jarvis let loose a cracking shot to give us the lead in the 63rd minute and we looked comfortable until a defensive mix up allowed Hereford an equalizer just before the end. However, the fresh legs of Alex Smith roared past the Hereford back four deep into injury time to score a memorable winning goal to keep us on track for promotion.

We stayed at home for our next game as relegation candidates Stevenage came to visit. Their first attack of the game resulted in an own goal by our 17 year defender Jack Metcalf and once they had the lead Stevenage decided to build a brick wall in front of their goal. Alex Smith managed to find an equalizer after 23 minutes and even though Stevenage were reduced to 10 men we could not break them down in a very frustrating afternoon.

The final game of the month was away to Morecambe with the only goal of the game coming from a headed corner by Oliver Nicholas. We should have won by a lot more but missed some great chances and both Baheng and Fofana both had powerful efforts crash against the post. Still we got the three points we came for.

Some interesting news about our parent club Fulham.

The key game next month will most likely be the clash against Stockport County and hopefully we will have consolidated our lead even further by the time that game rolls around.

So that completes this report and as I’m back to work tomorrow you will get a break now from my daily updates :)

Thanks for reading and continue to enjoy the Festive Season!!

      Hello Lye
Winning the title would be nice but I’d be delighted with automatic promotion too.

Well done Kevin, you starting to stretch your lead a little and I think it will be out of reach next month. Hopefully the Stockport result won’t need to matter too much. Goodluck mate

      Hello MJS
Greetings from Toronto, Canada, though I’m orginally from Wiltshire. Thanks very much for your comment and it’s kinda neat to get a response from someone who actually lives in Wrexham. Please feel free to comment again which I hope you will do or ask a question and I’ll do my best to answer.
