Torquay United: August 2009

Hello friends and welcome back as I begin the season with my new team Torquay United

The season had finally arrived and our opening game was to be at the Plainmoor Stadium in front of our home fans. The game belonged to our new strike partnership of Barrowman and Subotic who made the most of early opportunities and had wrapped the game up within the first thirty minutes. I was a little disappointed that we weren’t able to produce any second half goals but nonetheless we’ve kicked off with three points in the bag and dominated the game.

Three days later we faced Crystal Palace at home in League Cup action. You all know my track record in this competition and so as usual got knocked out in the first round. Enough said about this game.

Our following game was away to Dagenham and after falling behind early we setteld into out stride and Subotic found the equalizer for us just before half time. The second half was a very tight affair but the deadlock was broken in the 76th minute by right winger Jake Thomsom who latched on to a nicely placed pass by Shaun Hooks which turned out to be the wining goal.

We stayed on the road for our next game away to Burton who were tipped for relegation but seemed far from basement potential for the first 20 minutes but once winger Wayne Carlisle put us ahead then Burton totally crumbled and the floodgates opened to give us a 4-0 lead by the interval. Burton did put up a little more resistence in the second half but we added two more late in the game to cap a magnificent attacking performance.

Next up was a home tie againt Barnet which was and end to end encounter with the result always in the balance until a breakaway goal by Subotic near the final whistle ensured we took all three points. Barnet were a hard nut to crack but we did it and now have won four league games in a row!

The final game of the month was away to title favorites Bradford City. Although we enjoyed the greater possession Bradford were constantly on the attack and gave Southampton loanee golakeeper Michael Poke an extremely busy afternoon. Thankfully he was up to the task and was constantly in the right place at the right time. At the other end of the field we struggled with a very organized Bradford defence but skipper Nicky Wroe got the only goal of the game with a superb 35 yard strike from a free kick and so we got the victory and ended the month with a 100% league record. Amazing!

Our best player of the month was Wayne Carlisle who ended up with an average rating of 7.80. Here’s his profile.

We start off next month with a difficult game away to Bristol Rovers in the JPT and hopefully I can continue with these winning ways.

Thanks for reading.

Hi Kevin, that’s a brilliant start mate, well done. Your side look really good going forward, and you’re dominating games, which is great. Hopefully you can keep it up, and good luck for next month.

    Hi Laxeyman & Lye,
I’m really excited about this start; it’s just been incredible to watch as the team seems to have really gelled. I hope I can keep it up for a little while longer. The strange thing is I’m using the same tactic as in my first season with Huddersfield where I almost got relegated and everyone on the team was miserable! Perhaps it’s the South Coast sunshine :)

Well done Kevin. Thats a great start to your Torquay story. A very good read and some exciting results as well. You have only played five games but things are certainly looking good. I have just started in League Two myself so hopefully we can both get promotion quickly. Well done and good luck mate

    Hi Darren
Thanks for your comment. To be honest I’m still getting over the shock of my best ever CM /FM start (except when that old Diablo tactic was around). I hope the run continues for a little while longer. Good luck with your team.

    Hi Rob
Greetings from Canada and thanks for your comment. My tactic is a 442 which is set as Rigid / Attacking though I drop to Control if winning or Standard when playing Away. It’s a variation of Johnny’s latest Notts County tactic which can be found in the tactics tab at the top. I usually look at whether I’m favorites or not before deciding. If you send me an email to kevin.mayo@live.com I’ll attach the tactic in the reply. I’m 5 hours behind the UK and at work now so be patient :) Cheers!

Back from my holiday, have been reading all the stories on internet cafes. I’m not sure if Jake Thomson is as good as he was on the original patch but if he is as good it’s good news for you he was superb and played as my first choice right winger in the Premier League.

    Welcome back Ravenie!
Hope you had a good vacation. Thomson does have some really good stats and was already in the team on loan from Southampton when I took over. I’ll put up his profile in the next post.
