Scarborough Athletic FC a true Seadogs tale

Hey guys and welcome to Scarborough Athletic FC a true Seadogs tale. Recently I mentioned my new story would be delving into the depths of English Football and should prove to be my biggest challenge yet, you should now know the team and I can’t believe Tom guessed it in my last post, well done mate you obviously read every word I write. :) This may seem like a weird choice to most, so today I want to explain my history with Scarborough, why I want to manage them and what I hope to achieve. I will then go into the game itself and share the download required to go so low into Football Manager 2012 lower leagues.

My history with Scarborough FC

Back in 1986 a baby was born in Scarborough hospital, while he was raised in neighboring towns like Pickering and Malton he would revisit his place of birth at least once a week to be dragged around the shops by his mother. Seeing the boredom on the little boys face, now aged 7 she said ‘how would you like to see a game of Football with your Grandad, while I do the shopping.’ The little boy was prepared to jump at anything to get away from shopping and endured a 40 minute walk to the McCain stadium. Three hours later the boy returned with a big smile on his face and said, ‘We won 2-1!’

I didn’t even understand the rules of Football back then but Scarborough FC quickly became my team and I watched them play every weekend they were at home. Back then Scarborough played in Division 3 (which is now known as League 2.) You know those little kids that walk onto the pitch at the start of every game, usually hand in hand with one of the players? Well that was me on my 8th Birthday, I even became their ball boy for a short amount of time.

Scarborough usually finished around mid-table but then, in 1998, Scarborough fell one point short of automatic promotion and instead fell into the Division 3 play-offs. We were against Torquay and the the attendance was somehow higher than our capacity for the home leg. :) Unfortunately we lost the tie 5-2 on aggregate, but the whole experience was incredible. Then, next season in 1999, the unthinkable happened. Scarborough were relegated from the Football league after Carlisle’s goalkeeper scored two minutes past the allocated injury time to help them draw sending the Seadogs down and to rub salt into the wound, he was on loan under very dodgy circumstances. Either way, I was left distraught and close to tears, I just felt like this was such an injustice.

Scarborough never recovered from that and despite battling on in the Conference (now known as Blue Square Premier) we were relegated again seasons later. The club couldn’t cope financially, we had to sell the McCain stadium to the council and eventually went out of business. On the 20th June 2007 Scarborough FC were done, the crippling debt had proven too much and we ceased to exist, needless to say I was absolutely distraught. I still went to Scarborough for shopping and my route took me past the McCain stadium which went from this…

…To this…

The stadium is now been flattened for housing development as far as I’m aware, but some good news came shortly after Scarborough went out of business…later in 2007 a supporters trust formed the new Scarborough named Scarborough Athletic FC. We may have been dumped in the lower regions of the Northern Counties East league but Scarborough Athletic moved their way up to the Premier Division of this string of leagues and that is where my story begins, 5 promotions away from the Football league!! To help illustrate where I will begin my journey I have made an image of the ladder I must climb.

And here is the clubs information, we share our ground (Neil Hudgell Law Stadium, Bridlington) with Bridlington and it holds around 3,000 people. The clubs estimated worth is a lowly 22,000 pounds and we have just 110 season ticket holders. To give you an idea of the task at hand, I started this game and my first contract negotiation found me arguing with a scout over £5 a week wages…needless to say I lost the war of words and still can’t find a scout to sign for us.

Now to something important, I obviously had to download something to take me so low in the league ladder. For this I thank GASON & LEGHINF for their ‘English national league system update taking FM12 to level 12.’ As mentioned I have already begun the save and bar my game running slower than usual I have seen no glitches. On a side note I have not touched this database in anyway, I downloaded it and started playing, that’s it.

My targets with Scarborough Athletic FC

As you can see I have a long and rather depressing history with this club, but I love them and would like nothing more than to see Scarborough’s name back in the Football league. So, that is my aim, I want to get those five promotions required to take the Seadogs back into League Two. I also want to resolve my heartache of losing to Torquay in the play-off semi-final and get Scarborough into League One. From there, well it depends really. If the game is running smoothly without any glitches and the board aren’t making my job impossible then I may try and take Scarborough all the way, but if glitches are found or my board just won’t make promotions past League 2 or 1 possible then I will end the save with my head held high. :)

I won’t be putting a time stamp on anything and I have set myself no rules. I would expect to gain the first promotion straight away and maybe even make it consecutive promotions but after that things may slow down depending on budgets and finances. So, the next post will share my first season in charge of Scarborough Athletic and begin the long journey ahead, I hope this post has helped pass on some of my enthusiasm for the club and I hope you all be following. Thanks for reading and please feel free to ask any questions below.

I have a feeling that this will be the best Football Manager story ever written. It has it all: a superb opening post, deep motivation and a cracking manager! Best of luck Darren!

Thanks Johnny, if the game has no glitches and the board aren’t making things impossible then I would love to make this an epic story but I just hope there’s no problems.

Whoa, I was definitely not expecting this, but what a journey to undertake!! Imagine 10-15 years down the line, and little Scarborough are about to take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final …. A true fairy tale story! Best of luck with this pal, it’s gonna be a real roller coaster of a journey!

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 11:40

Thanks Sears, it would be amazing to see Scarborough strutting their stuff in Europe…I always say you need to pick a team that means something to you and I can’t think of any better than my first side.

    Hi Darren
Agree with Johnny, this could be the best FM story yet. I live in Scarborough, Ontario and Pickering is the next town East along the highway so I feel we have a connection here. That picture of the current stadium reminds me of some peoples back yards on council estates :)
By the way is Trowbridge Town or Westbury United in that database?
Good luck with this very interesting challenge.

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 11:43

Thanks Kevin, in England Pickering is about 30 minutes drive from Scarborough so you do have some connection indeed. As for the picture, that second one always makes my heart sink a little. But I can try and change things in my own little virtual world :) Both the clubs mentioned are there lower down the ladder mate.

Seems like an incredible challenge Darren! I’ve never seen anyone manage so low in the league system, it’d should be an extremely interesting story :) Good luck!

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 11:44

Hey Laxeyman, I do usually start much higher up the ladder but felt like doing something massive…I just hope I can reach my goals and make it to the football league at least.

    Darren

I read the storys on here everyday and it’s weird to see this one as i live in malton.
Looks like it’s going to be a great story.

Darren, this looks like the greatest challenge. I can’t even wrap my head around the challenges you will face but after this challenge I am sure you will be even more incredible at FM. I can’t wait to read this story and I can tell from your writing how much this team means to you so I wish you more than the best of the luck. You know we are all behind you in this challenge!

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 11:48

Thanks Bhargav, lower league football is very foreign to me and I have always been weary of going down the ladder as not to make a fool of myself :) But I decided that it was time to bite the bullet and do a proper challenge, then I thought of Scarborough and it all came together. Lets just hope there aren’t any issues with the database.

Good luck with this Darren really hope it goes well and the database works smoothly if it does this could be a epic story.

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 12:05

Yeah that is what I have my fingers crossed for, the database and board limitations later in the game could be the main problem but we’ll see what happens.

    14 января, 2012 at 12:02

    hey Darren,
i think thats one of the biggest challenges that anyone has ever undertaken on the game. it will definitely be a really good story and i cant wait for it to begin. needless to say i’ll be following this one closely. good luck with everything and looking forward to your next post!
    cheers!

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 12:06

Thanks Malhar, hopefully I can do the challenge justice and not fall victim to a faulty database or parsing error etc.

    14 января, 2012 at 12:05

Wow what a challenge Darren! I live in Hartlepool so im always happy when a local team does well (Apart from Darlington :P), Good Luck should be a great story!

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 12:08

Thanks Mark, we’ll see how it goes but this the story that’s meant the most to me personally since I started playing FM…I think it takes that to really give it a good go.

    14 января, 2012 at 12:52

Best of luck Darren — Im a regular reader of alot of stories on here & the forum, and this looks more exciting than them all. Im just a bit gutted that i’ve followed the download’s procedure, yet can’t manage to get the leagues into my game! :(

    Best of luck however!

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 12:57

Thanks for the support Jack, as for the download have you installed the game through steam? If so you need to download the editor first and install that, then you need to follow the instructions shown.

        14 января, 2012 at 17:13

Yes, managed to do a little research — and got it working! I’m in the Evo-Stik Southern with Taunton Town! I’d have to say though, it looks like you’ll be working with an extremely bland transfer market and little resources.

Very interested in how you do — will definately be keeping tabs!

        • Darren Smith

          14 января, 2012 at 17:24

Good to hear mate, I am almost done with my first season and while the resources and staff are very testing I’ve found some great players for this level of Football…take a look at Scott Bridges, he’s a deadly striker in my game.

        • Dan

          14 января, 2012 at 21:00

Coor Taunton Town my local team (Bridgwater Town) fierce rivals…. well good luck ;) Keep me updated would like to see how your getting on ;)

    Hi Darren,

That surely bring back all the memories you have by managing this team. It’s a long journey but we will be walking with you. Your enthusiasm has really raise us up and the best FM story ever? Sure it is.

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 13:30

Thanks Lye, I always say the one thing that keeps me going if a game gets tough is you guys…it makes all the difference and you actually feel like everyone is playing the game with you…I can’t wait to get things underway.

I might try this with a team from nearer to me, Willenhall Town. Be interesting to see this story having been there on Holiday many times. Good luck

  16. TheZiggy

    14 января, 2012 at 13:41

You really have set yourself a monumental challenge. These are leagues that most people aren’t even aware, and I just about think I’ve heard mention at some point. Arguing over a £5 a week wage with a scout really puts a perspective to the task ahead.

It will definitely test you to the maximum. One thing that’s scary to me, is that the last time I went to Scarborough was the year before you was born. The story of how the club declined is sad, but you now have the chance to bring the new club to its former heights and maybe beyond. Really hope there aren’t any glitches that stop you from being able to complete this epic journey.

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 14:26

I agree Ziggy, this will be a long and difficult challenge and the wages are certainly the most restrictive part of that. Funny little fact that you went to Scarborough for the last time before I was even born, it’s a really nice place.

I love FM because you can change a side that fell years ago into a success story, just as you said and I can’t wait to give it my best shot.

  17. David

    14 января, 2012 at 13:47

    Yo Darren,

Wish you all the best on this new challenge!!! I’ll be here reading every single word (as usual), I love the challenge and I know that if anyone can do it… it’s you… cant wait to see next chapter, please don’t take long…it’s already killing me… ;)

Again, all the best and let’s see Scarborough Athletic FC in CL…

    Cheer’s

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 14:35

Thanks for the support David, I’ll try and get a report out ASAP…I can confirm that I’m well into the season so that’s a good start.

  18. Alex

    14 января, 2012 at 14:45

Wow! What a post. The emotion and ,passion was expressed quite brilliantly. You even made me feel a bit guilty for how I watched the Carlisle goalkeeper scored that goal, I was so happy thinking at what a legend that keeper must be but I never spared a thought for those on the other end… those heartbroken Scarborough fans. I definitely agree with the mutterings of the greatest story ever, your stories are always brilliant but this will undoubtedly be the best, no pressure! My sympathy grew when I saw the before and after shots of the stadium, devastating. You seem to have quite a few season ticket holders though, much more than my team which are the Northern Irish champions. I would love to see you bring the new Scarborough to the forefront of English football, I hope you enjoy playing the save as much as I anticipate I will, reading it.

    Simply fantastic.

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 15:16

Thanks for the kind words Alex, seeing Scarborough go down was devastating and to be honest that relegation was the start of our finance problems which led to them going bust. And to think it was all done by a goalkeeper under very dodgy terms too. No one should feel bad for watching a goal and thinking someones a legend though, its just natural really but in Football there’s always two sides to the coin as you said. I just can’t wait to try and get Scarborough back where they belong. :)

Good luck mate looking forward to it, would love to see you make it all the way to the top! :) Might have a go my self with my local town Bridgwater Town hopefully they will be on there :) and do you where i could get there logo mate? :)

  20. John Martin

    14 января, 2012 at 17:41

Well i didn’t expect this. What a challenge and what a post. I thought it was gonna be something like Blyth or gateshaed and take them to the top but this will really test you. Best of luck and cant wait for the post. PS cant see blue suare south on the ladder?

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 20:02

Yeah I really wanted a challenge this time around and the Blue Square leagues didn’t feel low enough :) As for the Blue Square South, well the Blue square north/south are basically one league for the north of England and one for the South, you don’t go through both, just one or the other.

  21. vaibhavc

    14 января, 2012 at 18:15

I didn’t expect you going that far down! I would love to see you manage this off and make it to the big leagues. And thats so cool about being a ballboy and a mascot. And the debt sucks, but at least they made a new team. Are you even in the Carling Cup and FA Cup?

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 20:04

Thanks mate, I must admit this is the most enthusiastic I’ve been about a save in ages but I just hope there are no glitches. We enter the Preliminary rounds of the FA Cup but you don’t enter the Carling Cup until you reach the Football league.

  24. Adam D

    14 января, 2012 at 21:11

Since I’ve got the chance to get in on the ground floor of a (hopefully) long term story I’m going to make some predictions. These are based on nothing but my gut instinct and my massive lack of knowledge of football below the Premiership:

1- It will take 15 or more seasons to get to Npower League 2

2- Will take at least 5 seasons to get into the first round proper of the FA Cup (Picking the 8th season for when I think that’ll happen).
2a — The first time they reach the first round proper they will draw one of the hardest teams, away from home.
2b — The first time they reach the 3rd round proper they will draw a Premier league team.

3- Will not got a transer budget (apart from money made from sales) for the first 7 seasons.
3a — Setting target to the maximum possible (Win the league or simular) will not get the board to increase the wage budget within the first 5 seasons.

4- Will not turn full professional before reaching Npower League 2.

5- Will not move out of the Bridlington Stadium till they reach Npower League 1.

6- If they reach the Premier League, by then every real life player will have retired and it’s entirely populated with regens.

7- It will take Darren at least X years to get on the clubs Y:
    9 years — Favoured Personell
    15 years — Icon
    23 years — Legend

8- At least X players will beat Darren onto the clubs Y:
6 players be favoured before Darren
4 players become Icons before Darren
1 player will become a legend before Darren

9- The ‘Manager of the Year’ award will be awarded to a manger who didn’t accomplish half as much as Darren at least 4 times before the club reaches Npower League 2.

10- Scarborough will not beat a team 2 or more leagues above them in a cup competition within the first 15 years.

11- Darren will be offered the international coaching job for a rubbish team (for example Andorra, Lichenstein, Vanuatu, Scotland, etc.) before he’s reached the Championship.

12- England will not win the World Cup unless Darren takes over the national team.
12a — At some point before Scarborough reach the Premier League England will be knocked out of the World Cup on penalties.

13- Scarborough will beat Bridlington into the Npower League 2
13a- Scarbough will not lose to Bridlington whilst Darren is in charge.

Right, that’s my predictions down, let’s hope the modded database is stable and we get a nice long story.

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 21:29

I see almost all of the list as realistic bar the first one, I actually think I can hit the Football legaue within 10 seasons with a lot of luck and good management. That is based on the players I’ve seen available to Scarborough and previous experience. Though 10 seasons may be optimistic. :)

Hi darren that is one heck of a challenge u have got there. Am with tongbridge angels took me 3 seasons to get to the conference league. Looking forward to your next update. Good luck.

Hi fellow Seadog,, If you need a bit of help, download FMRTE and edit your game, i.e get more money and improve your players…

    • Darren Smith

      14 января, 2012 at 21:50

What would be the point, this is meant to be a challenge and cheating like that would make it pointless…I play the game properly, no cheats.

    15 января, 2012 at 01:29

Damn Bruh i don’t have any new words to describe it as people above already told everything. I cant find any person who writes better story then you do. I hope you had a nice 1st season Good luck :)

  28. nielsneutron

    15 января, 2012 at 07:10

    Good luck with the story.

I am very happy that you have decided to manage a lower league club with a custom database. That justify my own adventure for my next story on the forums.

  29. CsAtlantis

    15 января, 2012 at 08:44

Ooooh a story that has a bit of personal history, at least you’re in level 9, I wonder what level 12 looks like

Some fancy sponsor name for the lower leagues :D, anyway if you can only pay a scout 5 quid then I have no idea how your playing staff look like….

Do you have any facilities Darren? I suppose being a semi-pro club you can get some players in on amateur contracts (Do you have any players on full time-contracts?)

Good luck with pushing up the leagues, one day you might find yourself among the big clubs in the EPL ;)

    • Darren Smith

      15 января, 2012 at 09:43

Yeah lots of history with the Seadogs, they taught me the basics of Football really before I became fixated on the Toon. The players and staff don’t look good at all from first glance but after playing the game a while you start to get an eye for what attributes are required, but the market is slim pickings really.

We do have facilities, but not very good ones, the training is basic and everything is the bare minimum including the youth facilities which are rented. I don’t even have the option to offer players full time contracts so bring on professional football :)

  30. Woody

    15 января, 2012 at 08:53

this is the biggest challenge ever and will probarbly be the best story ever
anyway good luck with the ‘seadogs’ and will hopefully see you in league 2 soon

  31. qwerty

    15 января, 2012 at 11:33

    Good luck mate,
just a quick question; how do you go that far down? I can only get Blue square bet north/south

  32. siavosh

    15 января, 2012 at 18:04

    hi,
I think it will be an interesting story because you will be fight for every single point.
I’m sure you can handle it man!

    • Darren Smith

      15 января, 2012 at 18:48

Thanks Siavosh, I expect the first year to be a breeze but things will certainly be tight after that…its just weird because I’ve never experienced such a low level of football.

  33. Callum

    15 января, 2012 at 18:57

Wow! I can’t wait! I really hope the database copes because this is shaping up to be the greatest ever story! My cousin goes to university in Scarborough so I feel like I have a connection ;) Cant wait for the first post, hurry up! Good luck :)

    • Darren Smith

      15 января, 2012 at 19:13

Thanks Callum, I sincerely hope the database can cope too…my thoughts are that once I’m into the Blue Square I can knock off the lower leagues using the add/remove feature and that may help. Either way its going to be my biggest challenge yet.

      • Callum

        15 января, 2012 at 22:42

Yeah, I’m sure that won’t take you too long, just as long as you get enough backing from the board!

        • Darren Smith

          16 января, 2012 at 12:01

Exactly, the biggest issue bar a glitch is the clubs board, if they make things difficult then this may be very hard but we’ll see.

  34. Jack

    15 января, 2012 at 23:30

    Hi Darren,

I downloaded the extended database, and started my Taunton career and it’s going fantastic, so i’d like to thank you for that. I never knew of any updates like this being avaliable.

I’d really appreciate it if you’d find the time to also view my story, and im looking very much forward to seeing your first season update. I’m only half way through season one, but had some remarkable luck…

Also, id like to recommend you a player. ‘Ben Mackey’ is a proven goalscorer at this level (Two divisions below BSN/BSS) and i stumbled upon him by chance. Really doing the business for me, athough now, knowing you, you’ve probably been promoted and your looking for someone a little better… :)

Seriously all the best, and here the link to my story:

I doubt you are as surprised as I was reading your comment lol :) I have always been the same as you, finding it frustrating below the Championship but when something means so much, and you invest so much time into it as a result things must go well…that’s what I’m hoping for anyway ;)

What a great story! I honestly can’t wait to see how it goes.

Wow. And I thought Johnny’s Vauxhall story was ambitious :P … good luck, if anyone can do it it’ll be you!

I’m still too terrified to venture out of my Liverpool-based comfort zone. I can’t complain, 3 seasons, 3 wins, 2 doubles and a treble. Maybe you’ve inspired me to put my toes in the water. Maybe… :)

Thanks David, it will be my biggest challenge for sure (and probably the biggest I’ve seen anyone take on in England.) You should find your local side, one that means something and give it a go.

Well I only became a ‘real’ football fan after watching Liverpool win the CL in 2005. Being from South Africa, football was much less important to me so my ‘childhood team’ would probably be Liverpool, whom I am managing at the moment.

I suppose that since moving to Scotland, technically my local team would be Hearts, being that I live near Tynecastle, maybe i should attempt to manage them first before any lesser team ;)

In a way I am really pleased that you have decided to manage so low down, am sure you will really enjoy it as will we in reading it.

Carlisle is actually my local team! I have even met and cut the hair a few of the players past and present, and the player you mentioned who actually scored turned the x-mas light on in Carlisle last year! :)

I have been to Scarborough once on a school trip a few years ago, I still to this day cant remember what the trip was about! :)

Anyways! Best of luck with this am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Yeah I am enjoying it Ana, its a weird place to start but all fun. I forgot you’re from Carlisle :) Hope you get better soon anyway.

I have to say I haven’t seen the other posts yet as i want to read the story from the beginning obviously but looking at the photos of the stadium as it was and as it is it’s easy to see why you’d want to take your boyhood club back to where they rightfully belong. I’ve been a regular reader but never really commented on a post but this i have to say is a massive challenge and one i’m looking forward to reading and i’m sure i’m going to see a lot of arguments in the first few season over finances!

Thanks Chris, the club really does mean a lot to me and seeing them go bust was probably the only time a Football club has really left me devastated. So its great to have a chance to fight some old demons ;)

Hi, I downloaded the file from the link above and followed the instructions on the website but get this error
Warning: could not process rule group settings in c:/users/chris/documents/sports interactive/football manager 2012/editor data/leghinf_v1.218_FAC.dbc
could not find competition 100000039 in the database.

Did you get this error or is it just me? i’ve no idea what to do, i know it’s a long shot but i thought i’d ask you. I’ve left a message on those guys forum too but haven’t heard anything as yet. A real shame as it would be a great challenge

I’m sorry to hear that Chris, I never had a problem and haven’t heard that one. I honestly wouldn’t even know where to start advising you, lets just hope they can help on the forum. Hope you get a reply soon mate.

I’ve just found this story yesterday and I have to say it’s really exciting! I think your clever management and your enthusiasm for the club will get the team not just to League 2 but the Premier League, so i cannot wait to see how this amazing challenge going to end.

as a carlisle fan, a couple of years younger than you, i remember carlisle’s game against plymouth and knowing that anything less than a win would send carlisle not only down but out of existance but unfortunately i am here to make a point in defence of carlisle,
    1. there was 10 seconds left of the 4 minutes of added time when jimmy glass scored
    2. there was nothing dodgy about his loan as he did play for a month before we played plymouth and was signed as an emergency loan because our old chairman (knighton) (W****R) had sold all of our players. but it is amazing in the fact that if that day had been different carlisle would probably be in scarborough position and scarborough could be well up the leagues. but have to say have enjoyed reading the story

Sorry that is not my file, when I downloaded I just downloaded the file files I wanted (ie different countries) using WinRAR and then extracted them as per the instructions on the site. I’m not sure what those downloads are that you’re referring too.

Basically, download Winrar first, then download the countries logos you want one by one extracting each one using Winrar to the file sports interactive/football manager 2012/graphics/logos. If you don’t have the graphics folder and logo one within that then create them and extract the files there. After doing all that you load the game and go to preferences, then display and sound, then untick ‘use skin cache’ and tick ‘always reload skin on confirm’. Then just click ‘reload skin’ in the bottom left and confirm. They should be there then. The only part that may not be completely clear is the extracting to winrar bit.
