Jake: Which Challenge should I undertake in FM2012?

Hey everyone!

Darren has done one of these polls in the past few days, and I think I would like the community to choose what I will be doing in the new Football Manager series too. Honestly, I have been thinking about the different options I could propose for a while now and I think I have devised four options that would set me through the whole year and get you lot excited at the story ;)

Anyway these are the four options to choose from:

Option 1 — Pentagon Challenge
You all know about Ana’s Pentagon Challenge (which she has yet to finish ;)). Basically it is where you set out to win all five of the Champions League trophies from around the different continents, starting with a ‘Sunday League’ rep. I have to confess that I tested one of these for myself, and I ended up taking a team in the Indonesian third tier for 8 years before residing with a Korean second division club. Its hard, but it was so much fun.

Option 2 — San Marino/Andorra Challenge
Quite a famous challenge in the FM community, but this would see me take hold of San Marino (the club) in the Italian third division and also the National side. Hoping to win the Champions League with the former, and get into the top 10 of the world ranking with the latter. There is also the possibility of me getting FC Andorra in the Spanish seventh tier and hoping to achieve the same objectives, but this is subject to me finding a custom database that will let me manage a team that far down the leagues.

Option 3 — Youth Academy Challenge
The youth academy challenge is something that is rarely seen on Football Manager blogs. It is where I take hold of a team that is in the lower divisions of a mediocre league system (Ie Varberg BOIS in the Swedish League) and try to only use youth players out of my academy to challenge for the ultimate goal of the Europa League title. That’s right, I can’t sign anyone. With the new youth system in place, it should be achievable.

Option 4 — League Title Challenge
So, the final challenge is basically for me to win all of the domestic titles in Europe, starting out with a ‘Sunday League’ reputation. Obviously because of the new database-league system it has made it easy for me to chop and change what leagues I can manage in so my system isn’t running too slowly.

Excessive: "Which challenge should I undertake in FM 2012?"

  • San Marino/Andorra Challenge (35%, 103 Votes)
  • Youth Academy Challenge (32%, 96 Votes)
  • Pentagon Challenge (20%, 58 Votes)
  • League Titles Challenge (13%, 39 Votes)

Total Voters: 296

Well, they are the options boys and girls! I am looking forward to seeing what the result of the poll is going to be.

Cheers,

    Hi Jake,
I like the idea that you want to do the youth player challenge but it is stupidly difficult even with the best of clubs. It took me 4 seasons to do it with Corinthians. But comparing how long you’ve spent on this current save I wouldn’t put it pass you. You could do it.

Thanks mate.. I’m always one for challenging myself so I’m ready if you lot opt for that option ;)

I voted for the league challege option as I think every other option would either be insanely difficult or I’ve seen it a lot before. Still good luck with whatever you choose :)

I went for the youth academy challenge im just wondering would you have to sell or your players on that one as well or could you keep them

Nope, I get to retain the players I already have at the club. But I’m not allowed to buy any more in ;)

I’m with Nick, the League challenge is the most realistic in terms of not pulling your hair out. I personally think the youth challenge is impossible. Unless the new game is 1000 times better in terms of youth coming through the academy anyway. And even then I can’t see it as feasible. Then again I never thought Varbergs could win the ECL…you’ve proved me wrong before and I’d love nothing more than for it to happen again.

I have thought it through and with some luck and a decent amount of good regens, I think I could get there. Just have to invest heavily in coaches, facilities and the like to make the most out of that challenge.

      Thanks for voting mate :)

All really interesting challenges Jake, I like the sound of them all tbh :) I went for the San Marino challenge though :)

I think the youth challenge might be too hard but I like to see you try even if you switch to another challenge down the road.

      Thanks Kevin.

Well, I will give it my best shot.. Whether I can get there will definitely be a question but I guess that if, in the end, I hit a brick wall and say enough is enough, then I will choose the second option (if the Youth Academy option comes first)..

I went for the Youth Challenge as it sounds insanely Stupid and it will take you ages to do. After a while you might get more determination to do it when you get closer.

nice selection you have there! was very difficult to pick one as I liked all your ideas! I went for the San Marino/Andorra challenge in the end!

I can’t wait for FM12 to come out now even though I said to myself a few months ago that I wasn’t going to buy it! It’s mainly because I have decided to do a challenge on there to win the top league in every single country! The anytime, anywhere feature that will be introduced will definitely help with this :)

Awesome Widge, can’t wait to see how you get on with that!

Thanks for your vote anyway mate ;)

Haven’t seen many people do the San Marino challenge yet, so I voted for that, at least you can see your academy players early, so should be easier!

The youth challenge sounds nice to me, that’s where my vote went ;)

Very nice challenges and no matter which one gets picked, it will be certainly a joy to watch. I personally opted for the San Marino challenge since double challenges are always more interesting, but also the youth challenge will be a great one to watch (even though, most likely, frustrating at times). Good luck!

Very nice challenges indeed. I might pick one of these challenges for myself in FM12.

League challenge for me, San Marino will just be too frustrating, Youth challenge is ok I guess.

Went for youth challenge, seen a few careers on SI forum. Frankly, there was a guy, who managed to get his eighth tier team all the way to Championship in just 20 seasons on FM11. So with the right guidance it is definitely achievable :)

Same, I have been following some of the careers and it is a great read. Just hope I can emulate that if it ends up that I do that challenge ;)

I went for the Youth challenge, I’ve seen people do a challenge where they take a low league team and build them up using only players from that country and I find it really interesting as it can also make the national team a lot better :D

    Good luck for FM12!

Cheers Jake! Absolutely, they are great careers.

      Thanks for the vote :D

    Hey Jake,
I chose San Marino, I’ve never seen anyone complete that challenge since everyone seems to give up after about 10 seasons but judging by your current story I’m sure you could stick at it and pull it off :)

      Cheers Dan!

It’s something that I have always wanted to do since reading various stories that have made their goals with the save. Thanks for the confidence haha ;)

    Hey Jake

The Youth challenge seems to hard but i would like to see how you do, so i voted for that.

      Cheers Martin!

It will be interesting to find out myself. Looks like it’s swaying towards that way anyway ;)

I voted for the youth challenge. The youth challenge is going to be difficult and I would like to see how you do it, looking at how well you did for the Varberg Story. I wonder if you are going to allow yourself to buy poach players less than 17 from other clubs in your country though. That’s going to make it slightly easier but I’m saying this because I don’t have much confidence in the new youth system giving more quality. My impression of it is that it only helps save money by not giving us crap players…

      Thanks DB!

Actually, I am just going to play it with my academy prospects. No transfers In is part of the challenge and im fully prepared to see what I can do with those resources.

Honestly, neither do I.. But the challenge is there. Fingers crossed that I can get somewhere with it though ;)

Haha I’d love to bring through another Messi, Iniesta or Xavi!

      Thanks for the vote :)
