Hey guys and welcome to our first Football Manager Stories Podcast. Myself, Johnny and Jake have wanted to start a Podcast for some time now and we’ve finally gotten round to doing so. This will be an ongoing feature for the community and all the FMS Podcast’s will be available in the tab near the top of this site, through I-Tunes and in each episode post, but we’ll go into more detail in a minute. Let me start by introducing episode one.
Hosts: Darren Smith and Jake Lenahan.
Duration: 1 hour
Content: An introduction to the Podcast and what we’re all about, Darren’s Scarborough story, Jake’s youth challenge story, updates from the forum, scouting network, Euro Championships, potential summer transfers and a quiz.

Very nice job guys ;) nice idea.
In my opinion videos would be a better option.
Darren Smith
2 июня, 2012 at 13:23
Thanks Ivo, but I think you have the wrong idea of what a Podcast is. It’s not a way to tell stories or share tips, its just a way to talk about stuff and share your thoughts, there would be no way of doing this through video.
Ivo Knežević
2 июня, 2012 at 18:52
Yeah but maybe you could like do a video with pictures of the thing you talk about and stuff…
Anyway it would be interesting too see you guys commenting on our stories in the forum :D
Darren Smith
2 июня, 2012 at 18:55
Have you listened to the Podcast? If so you’ll see why it is a Podcast and not a video. We will be talking about Forum stories at some point I’m sure, its one thing on a list of many at the moment so its more a question of in which episode it happens.

Well done guys in getting this launched!!

Thanks Kevin, it took a while but the hard work is behind us now and we can concentrate purely on content in future episodes.

About half way through at the moment and I’m really enjoying it , some interesting and fantastic discussion. Terrific work guys ! :)

2 июня, 2012 at 13:57
Thanks Sears, hope you enjoy the rest of it…there’s a fun quiz at the end, but I won’t spoil who won it for you.

I’ve just listened for around half an hour, and will listen to the rest when I get some free time. But great idea guys, another stepping stone for FMS. This will be my new soccer saturday for the summer :)
Maybe next podcast you could discuss who you think will go down next season, win the prem, etc…
Darren Smith
2 июня, 2012 at 14:47
Thanks mate, I hope you enjoy the second half. As for next season its a bit too early to be talking directly about promotion and relegation’s as pre-season won’t have started then, but we’ll probably continue along the theme of the Euro Championships and offer our views on the tournament if the next Podcast is before the final.

An entertaining listen guys. A great addition to the site. On minor technical issue, which didn’t affect the enjoyment, but there was a lot of excess noise of Jake’s microphone. It may be he’s breathing out into it, which is causing the added noise. It would just sound that bit more professional if it could be eliminated.
I’m showing my age, because I picked Oxlade-Chamberlain as the next Gary Waddle, and he was indeed a winger. He is one of many England players to have missed a penalty in an international shoot-out, something I hope Oxlade-Chamberlain doesn’t emulate.
Something I’d like to hear, is your thoughts on the moves of Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool and Paul Lambert to Aston Villa. I’m most interested in what effect you think it’ll have on both Swansea and Norwich, as they’ve both lost very good managers.
Darren is spot on that you need a lot of patience at the start of the game, because rushing to get on with the fixtures without sorting all the little details, in the backroom through to the set-piece layout, will probably end in some horrible disaster.
Also quite interesting that Darren used to have a lot of problems getting a tactic to work. It was only really with the FM10 release that I got a handle on tactics. Before that I couldn’t have written a blog, as it was a series of hideous disasters, and a tale of what not to try. ;)

2 июня, 2012 at 14:57
Thanks for the feedback Ziggy, we really appreciate it. I agree Jake’s mic was letting our more unwanted noise, might have been a problem with the mic position too close to his mouth or nose maybe…we’ll have to watch that next time.
Interesting topic there on the Liverpool and Aston Villa managers situation and something that could develop into other parts of Football so that certainly makes the shortlist of topics next episode.
As for the tactics thing, I was truly useless around FM08, it wasn’t until 09 that a light bulb went off and everything seemed to make sense.
TheZiggy
3 июня, 2012 at 18:21
That makes me feel so much better about how useless I was back then at creating a tactic. I couldn’t even get get a team like Man United to be consistent, which takes some doing. :D

A good listen guys, keep going with this please.
My question is, how do you use the pre- match opposition screen?? as I never know how to use it to my advantage. :]
Darren Smith
2 июня, 2012 at 22:23
Thanks Matthew, that’s a good question and will certainly make the shortlist for the next Podcast.

I have just finished listening to it guys and it was brilliant, great job! And congrats to Jake for winning the first leg of the quiz :)
P.S.: Looking forward to taking part in one of these, maybe in episode two if it won’t be recorded next week :)
Darren Smith
3 июня, 2012 at 19:24
Thanks Johnny, I’m glad you liked it…must admit my pride is hurt slightly by the first episode quiz loss, but I’ll back!! ;)
Episode two should hopefully be recorded in a week and a half I think, but it all depends on getting everyone together. Would be great to have you in there too, I’ll email you later about it. Thanks

Hey guys, I’ve been lurking around the sight for a while now, just never got to posting.
I think the podcast is great! Haven’t quite gotten to the end of it, but so far it is fantastic. One question I would have especially for Darren, is maybe how to pace your youngsters, kind of when it is best to call them up from the academy, and when you should start giving them first team matches, and how many.
Darren Smith
3 июня, 2012 at 23:30
Thanks Calvin, glad you liked the Podcast. Interesting question that may help a few gamers so will certainly feature in the Podcast. We’ll have it on the shortlist for the next episode, cheers.

This was a excellent idea (YY) where can i find jakes youth story
Darren Smith
4 июня, 2012 at 09:22
Thanks mate, you can find Jakes story in the forum here https://footballmanagerstory.com/forum/index.php?topic=824.0 That link starts on page one so just scroll to the bottom then go to the next page and so on and so forth.

Hi, great podcast, really enjoyed it, thank you very much.
Besides the podcast would be nice to have video podcasts guides on FM.
Cheers and congratulations for the wonderful site you are creating!
Darren Smith
4 июня, 2012 at 09:25
Thanks Mariano, the video guides has been mentioned before but it may not be beneficial for the site itself. Search engines pick up on the written word and you stand more chance of getting such guides seen if they are in post form. The other issue is finding the time but its something I’ve thought of a few times but always found a good enough reason not to do.

need some help in finding it from my Ipod. I searched for FMS podcast but it doesnt bring up any result
Darren Smith
4 июня, 2012 at 16:31
You need to follow the steps shown in the post above. You can’t get it straight on the iPod, you need to get it on iTunes first then sync it onto the iPod from there…just follow the steps shown the post and it will work.

Great idea guys, thoroughlly enjoyed it. jakes quiz questions were hard!
Will you 2 have guests in the podcast?
Darren Smith
4 июня, 2012 at 18:56
Thanks Karl, I couldn’t agree more…Jakes quiz questions were far too difficult ;)
We will be having guests on the Podcats, we’re hoping to have Johnny for episode 2 providing our schedules don’t clash.
Karl
4 июня, 2012 at 18:58
that’ll be cool, you could talk about his story.
Darren Smith
4 июня, 2012 at 19:38
Yeah we will do.

6 июня, 2012 at 12:51
Fantastic job there, guys! It was a good way to introduce the idea, I can’t wait to see (hear) what this develops into :) One thing tho, you may want to spend some more time on your jingles (or however the melody things are called). Maybe keep it more simple, they’re only there to indicate a change of topic, so a 3 second interval of a little more pleasant to the ear melody should be enough. The ones you put in this time around kind of disrupted my concentration, for a lack of a better phrase. It wasn’t tragic, I just feel you can do better ;)
I’d personally love to hear how you look for players to sign. Obviosly, the scouting network is there for a reason but they never find all the interesting players, at least not until it’s too late and someone else snapped them up ;)
Darren Smith
6 июня, 2012 at 19:01
Thanks. As fort he music I’ll put it to Jake but I quite like the tracks and their length. We’ve missed the boat for questions on the next episode as the slots are full but may have room for the one after.

That podcast was brilliant, really good to hear you guys talking about fm. Now im not a great tactician on fm but i do the same as Darren does and pays attention to every detail at the beggining of the game and also i agree 100% that you have to be in the right frame of mind to start a new career. Also enjoyed hearing about the youth to gold system as since reading it a while back on the forum i always implement it now in my saves but i do have 1 question, would you still implement youth to gold when starting off in lower league management or would you wait till you got up through the leagues? Also about the new software for the forum i think it we be an exellent addition to n already succesfull site but have you guys ever thought about having a shoutbox where we could chat with other virtual football managers lol? Already looking forward to the next installment, keep up the good work guys.
Darren Smith
6 июня, 2012 at 19:07
Thanks mate, I think we’ll struggle to fit your questions into the next Podcast so will answer them now. The Y2G system should only be used when in the top flight and preferably with Champions League football, it won’t work otherwise. We’ll have to wait for Jakes reply on the shoutbox…but if I remember rightly they used to have one, but took it down so I can’t see them reinstating something they had rid of before, but obviously can’t speak for Johnny and Jake.
