Hey guys and welcome to our fourth Football Manager Stories Podcast. After the success of episodes 1, 2 and 3 we are back to talk about some FM 2013 including possible new features, real life football and answer your questions. This is still of course an ongoing feature for the community and all the FMS Podcast’s will be available in the tab near the top of this site, through I-Tunes and in each episode post, but we’ll go into more detail in a minute. Let me start by introducing episode four.
Hosts: Darren Smith and Jake Lenahan.
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
Content: We’ll be discussing FM 2013, looking at what we want to see and what Sports Interactive may change for the next edition, then its time to talk Football as we discuss the Olympics and most recent transfer gossip, then Darren will try to catch up in the quiz and we’ll answer some of your questions from episode three.
Want to listen to episode four of the FMS Podcast? Its simple, just click the play button below!
If you don’t have time to listen right now and would rather listen through your iPod on the way to work or school, why not subscribe to our RSS feed, its simple and takes seconds…all you need is iTunes and to click this link here. That will direct you to our iTunes page where you can find all the episodes and subscribe through iTunes on your computer. Fantastic, really enjoyed that one! It gets better every episode. Interesting to hear the different sides of the Balotelli argument, honestly I’m still sitting on the fence! One week a master, next week a moron.
Had a great question yesterday but forgotten it … typical. When I remember I’ll ask it.
Keep up the Brazilliance :D I love a good unintentional pun btw

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it…everyone knows my stance on Bratotelli so I won’t moan on about him (thought I’d include another play on words there :))

Great podcast their guys, really good listen, very entertaining, really enjoyed it. Thanks also for mentioning my question, and don’t really mind that you pronounced my name wrong, a lot of people do at the first go but just for future reference the way to say it is go-rav, if that makes sense.
I have 2 questions too.
1) Do you think that the 6+5 rule should be introduced to the premier league?
2) Do you think the transfer window should be open all year round?
Thanks and can’t wait for the next episode! :D
Darren Smith

No problem Gaurav, and apolagies about pronouncing your name wrong, will have to get it right next time.
As for your questions we’ll see if they fit in for the next Podcast.

Hey guys, great episode.
Nice too see you back.
Another funny quiz.
My question for the next episode is: Your expectation on how B.Rodgers will do at Liverpool?
Keep this up!
Darren Smith
7 августа, 2012 at 18:40
Thanks Ivo, unfortunately we sort of touched on this in a previous episode, maybe 2 or 3 so might not be answering that question depending on how many others come in.

having been looking forward to this for some time, i can say that it didn’t disappoint, well i suppose you guys never do. I do hate Balotelli a lot and i 100% agree with Darren on that one. Thanks for reading out my question also btw :). Darren your explanation of the Spain «no strikers» tactic is exactly the way i see it also. On the wonderkid question, Kara and Kovacic were the first 2 i immediately went for, Kovacic because i rated him extremely high IRL so i wanted to see how good he was on this game, and Kara because He is really good on Fifa 12 so i went for him :)
Great Work lads ;)
My question is — We are now starting to see major consequences for «sugar daddies» buying a club and throwing out cash left right and centre with Malaga now close to being bankrupt. What do you guys think of the idea of a Spending Cap and Wage Cap, because if a club who has just got into the CL goes bankrupt shouldn’t something be done about it ?
I would also like to hear your expectations for the Premier League next season in terms of each club, and also could it live up to last season ?

Thanks mate, glad you’re enjoying these Podcasts.
We will certainly address your first question as its an interesting topic…as for the second we’ll maybe cover it briefly but we won’t have time to go through each club unfortunately.

Probably the best one yet guys, really good!
Darren, I have to disagree with you and side with Jake concerning Balotelli, I just love him and his antics makes me love him even more!!!!
Dunno if it was just my lapt but Darren, your voice was echo-ing, just found it sounded a bit weird.
Keep it up, can’twait for the next one!
Darren Smith
7 августа, 2012 at 19:31
Thanks Karl, but I won’t mention Balotelli…I’ve said my peace there :) As for the echo you’re hearing, I haven’t noticed it myself but we’ll see if any other listeners have.

Ha!! Thanks for the double mention! :)
Nice to see that you talked about those damn financial problems with that elusive ‘other’ category I really do hope they address that in the new game I cant stand losing money with out knowing why.
Interesting thoughts on the Spain ‘shadow forward’ but I cat see del Bosque using it when Villa returns but he has surprised me before so who knows! Am biased of course but I would say Xavi is probably the best creative midfielder of all time so no-one can really be compared to him he is just a unique exceptional talent. :)
My view on rich owners haven’t changed am most worried about how far until its stopped? I know that the financial fair play thing is coming soon but is that really the solution?
My question is do you think it will help or hinder in the long run, I mean you can only spend within your means from what I understand so the rich clubs will continue to spend big whilst the gap from the smaller and less well know clubs will be far greater as they wont turnover the profits the elite clubs will.
That would allow the smaller clubs to invest more in the youth set-up I guess but would teams really be happy to wait so many years to start producing academy players to have them stolen by the richer ones?
Seeing as Jake is a fan of a club with a rich owner and you are a fan of a club without and trying to compete against that, it will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the new fair play scheme and if you are for or against it.
Always knew you two would make this a success, well done. :)

Interesting views Ana, glad you managed to listen as this one was very suited to you. We’ll certainly get around to your question, but I can’t guarantee it won’t turn into an argument lol, me and Jake tend to get very passionate during some debates especially when our clubs are involved (we chat a lot more beyond the Podcast.) Should be interesting to see what conclusion we reach though.

8 августа, 2012 at 12:49
Also, have you tried Fifa 12’s tactic creator? Something like that, implemented out of a game but using the match engine on the training ground, would be perfect

Final question, Darren, in your Arsenal 4-5-1, is it fine to change the MCL AP to an AMC? He tends to play as an AMC anyway and my squad has more flexibility if there’s an AMC and two MCs
Darren Smith
8 августа, 2012 at 19:11
No it isn’t that would change the tactic too much.

Another very entertaining listen :)
The finances thing is strange, and that other category in expenses is apparently for, things such as advertising, agent fees, supplies, travel and general expenses. I love the mysteriousness of general expenses, It is also amusing that agent fees has category of its own, so it seems SI are a bit confused here. ;)
The thing you mentioned about a dialog box coming up, where you have a time in which to decide to select a special free kick, is pretty much how I was thinking about for being able to change who is taking a free kick, or even penalty on the fly, but without the game actually stopping. If your main penalty taker is having a dire match, or nervous, or even suffering a goal drought, you might not want him to take it, and currently it’s a pain to change it. Some teams alternate their penalty takers, and with free kicks it’s even more fluid. Also with free kicks currently broken, any that hit them with power, are only useful when they’re a long way from goal, or hitting them in from the sides. Much more flexibility is needed, because I currently have my best free kick taker well down the list, because he always smashes the ball straight at the wall.
I definitely want more leagues in the game, in particular the J-League. Its one of the few leagues from Asia that interests me. I also like the idea of some a few more leagues added below the BSN and BSS in England.

8 августа, 2012 at 19:22
Thanks Ziggy, glad you enjoyed it. The whole finances thing is an interesting topic and one of many things I’d like to see expanded upon for FM13. Your thoughts on being able to change the kick takers is a good one too…its always too late when you realize your main man isn’t playing or has been subbed and lest face it we always forget to change those takers.

Just a few questions from me:
What do you think of Arsenal’s signings? They’ve bought Podolski, Giroud and Cazorla but I think they could really use a right back as they only have Jenkinson, and there is always the question mark hanging over Van Persie
Is there a way I could get the podcast over Android?
And finally, Malaga might be an interesting case study in itself, they spent so much just to get into the Champions League but ended up 40 million in debt and needing to sell off their best player(s) to break even and avoid being relegated as per the Spanish league rules
Darren Smith

Thanks mate we’ll see if we can fit those questions in…as for Android I don’t know if or how you’d download it to that as I have an iPhone.

Awesome start guys! Glad to be what I think is the first review on the US iTunes. One question for you:
I understand the importance of first-team playing time, but my youth strategy consists of buying any youth players that might fit into my tactics that aren’t more than a couple million pounds. This leads me to have a youth team of ~22 U-18s, a reserve team of ~24 U-21s, and loaning out enough U-21s to form another reserve team. Four years after implementing this strategy, I’m running into a problem: My players are improving steadily, but not quickly. I have 21 year olds that are almost good enough to be back-ups. Does this mean that my expectations are too high, in terms of growth rate, or that I’m not giving them enough playing time? How, when I cast such a wide net, can I afford to give them all decent amounts of time without killing my first team? What are your thoughts on my system?
Darren Smith
10 августа, 2012 at 11:44
Thanks Travis, as for your question it won’t feature due to many listeners not been able to relate. But you seem to be bringing in far too many players…just select the best youngsters and concentrate on one or two for each position, to be fair two is pushing it though. Its simple, no first team football no growth.

Hey darren, Great to hear the podcast is back!
My question is: when you started your scarbourough save, in the early years (before bsn/bss) what tips cn you give on the fiancial situation as I keep losing money on my lower league team and Ive tried getting a good cup run and hosting lots friendlies but I keep losing to much money during the season and I’m in like 100K in the red and I cant control it?
All help will be appreciated!
Darren Smith
10 августа, 2012 at 11:46
Glad to be back mate, we have already covered your question in part so won’t be going back over it in detail. But there are no short cuts with finances. Just lower the wage bill (sell anyone who won’t play) arrange top friendlies and just keep the outgoings down, thats all you can do.

This is regarding a question you had on a previous podcast, where someone asked how you find players. It was worded along the lines of «obviously the scouting network is there for a reason, but they never seem to find the players until they are signed by someone else». I dont think this person was talking about Darrens FMS scouting network, but the actual scouts in game. This post maybe superfluous, but I think scouting maybe a challenge for some people.
On a closing note, I have a suggestion for a new feature. I would like to see a news alert option on players, clubs etc. My thought is sometimes the news are so many and uninteresting that I accidentally skip past something I should have read. It would be great to have an option where you cant skip past selected news (like it is with season expectations, cpt selection etc). Say for instance I would like to manage a team (or at least apply) should the job become available, the game stops to tell me Mr. X has now left the club and applications are welcome.

The whole Scouting Network thing has already been discussed and sorted with the person who commented.

Hi guys, I love the pod cast its a great listen on the tube to work, I was wondering if you lot were thinking of setting up a dream team league in the sun as it would be good to see how everyone picks real players. I’m sure a lot of us would love to play a network game with the writers to pitch our selfs against you lot which would be difficult due to peoples busy lives and Internet connections so this seems like it would be the next best thing. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next one.

I’m glad you like the Podcast Gavin, we make it with the thought of an enjoyable listen during otherwise boring tasks so its nice to know we achieved that. I personally weren’t be making a mini dream team as its Johnny’s brand and anything like that is down to him to create, but must admit I love Dream Team :) Doing network games with the readers would be a cool feature but unfortunately we are too busy with the site itself.

Hi, I really enjoyed this episode my question is: In my current save Newcastle Benfield, for the first time really even when we have not been favourites everything has just clicked into place perfectly, has this ever happned in any of your saves?
Darren Smith
24 августа, 2012 at 11:21
That won’t feature in the Podcast but I can say that sometimes things just click with an underrated side for one season then start to get tough after a little success….I call it the underdog effect.
