Football Manager — How to find the best regens

Football Manager is the best management simulation, ever. However the game would be restricted if SI were to just use real life players. This is why FM creates regens within every single game, so we can carry on playing forever. Today I will share some hints and tips on how to find the best Football Manager regens. If you use the right techniques, these FM regens can be found early and therefore cheap. :) :) All the methods below are used by myself. But the places and times you can find these regens come from tonnes of research and surveying through the FM community on top of my own experience.

Before we get sticky with the details and technical stuff, I have one piece of obvious advice. When you load up a country, more players from that area are available. Therefore more regens will be available. I would suggest loading up countries like Brazil, Argentina and a few small European ones like Croatia. The amount of countries will depend on your computers performance, but you get the idea. Load the country and get access to more regens.

Preparation — the right scouts and correct assignments

You don’t have to do all the work yourself. Sign 5-6 scouts, all with experience in different regions. Each scout must have very high attributes for judging player ability and judging player potential. Every scout should be diverse and different from the rest. This way you’ll have a bigger potential network of countries to scour. Your six scouts should collectively have knowledge in the following countries.

  • Big European countries — Italy, Spain, France, England, Holland, Germany and Portugal (spread over two scouts.)
  • Smaller European countries — Croatia, Belgium, Czech Republic, Romania, Ukraine and Russia (spread over two scouts.)
  • North and South America — Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico (one scout.)
  • Africa — South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast (one scout.)

Obviously you can’t expect to get knowledge in all these countries across your scouting network…but its a good guide. Now you have the scouts, here is how you should set their assignments. Click on your scouts name, now click ‘add new assignment’. From here you should select ‘add new assignment’ situated near the bottom of your screen. A filter box pops up, follow the steps below.

  • Select persons age and set to is at most 19.
  • Now you should use the assign to option. Select the region your scout has the most knowledge of. Use the list above to select which regions you’ll cover. Obviously all your scouts will cover different regions/countries.
  • Now make sure you check if the scout has finished his search (do this every month.) When he has either reset for the same region/country or pick a new one.
  • The key nations to scout are Argentina, Brazil, France, England U19’s, Italy, Spain, Holland, Croatia and Czech Republic.
  • Please note regens are created from the start of the game, so you may need to wait a little before their generated. After the first year you’ll notice more and more regens appearing with every year.

How to manually search and where

Scouts are important and offer a helping hand, but I find my best regens through manual searches. We’ll start by explaining what view mode you should be in while looking at clubs and then decipher which clubs to search. So, what is the best view to search through a club for regens? While in a club screen set your ‘view’ option to ‘general information’. Now click the age tab until all the players are listed in order of their age from youngest to oldest. Now manually look at every player under the age of 21. While searching clubs with a huge list of players, you may want to limit views to regens valued £800K plus. But if searching the same clubs as myself this shouldn’t be a problem. So below are all the clubs I search and the clubs I have seen talked about a lot within the community (excluding big European clubs.) One side note is to search the whole of Brazil and Argentina not just the clubs listed below.

EuropeAberdeen, Motherwell (Scotland), Auxerre (Fance), Rayo Vallecano (Spain), Stuttgart (Germany), Feyenoord, Twente, Ajax (Holland), Dinamo Minsk (Belarus), Dinamo, Hajduk (Croatia), Anderlecht (Belgium), Slavia Prague (Czech Rep.)

South AmericaArsenal Sarandi, Argentinos, Banfield, Boca Jnrs, Colon, River Plate, Estudiantes (Argentina), Cruzeiro, Independiente, Gremio, Santos, Flamengo (Brazil) and Colo Colo (Chile.)

North AmericaChivas, Atlas, America (MEX) and Cruz Azul (Mexico.)

AfricaOrlando Pirates, Ajax Cape Town (S.Africa), ASEC (Ivory Coast), Zamalek (Egypt), Enyimba, Kano Pillars, Heartland (Nigeria.)

Any club in bold should seriously be checked, I have seen amazing regens come from those areas. Below is when you should check clubs within each country. FM has a pre-set date for every country to produce new youth, these dates should put you ahead of the pack. If you can buy regens at 16-17, the price tag will be minimal. Just to clarify the dates below are an estimate for when regens are generated based on what I’ve seen in game and read around the community.

Country Date of youth intake every year
Croatia 20th June
France 20th June
Germany 20th June
Scotland 20th June
England 25th June
Czech Republic 30th June
Belgium 30th June
Holland 7th July
South Africa 15th July
Mexico 20th July
Argentina 1st August
Chile 1st January
Brazil 2nd January
Nigeria 15th January
Egypt 15th January
Belarus 14th February
Turkey/Portugal 20th June
Italy 30th June
Romania 1st July
Spain 10th July
Sweden/Russia 27th December
Most of Africa 15th January

I have only listed the top European and relevant countries to my club shortlist. You should check all the clubs I listed previously during the date their country produces youth. This way you’ll be the first to see any top talent. You should also check the under 19 and under 21 national sides. Any top class talent will be lurking within those teams. Every six months I would recommend selecting ten national teams and searching their youth. Maybe two big European countries, two South American etc.

How to use the filtered search and find top regens

Doing a filtered search is simple and most of you know how. Therefore, below are some simple steps on how I set up my filtered search for regens. (Note the amount of regens listed will depend on your in game year.) Basically the game starts with next to no regens, then after one year the first batch of regens are introduced at the age of 15-17.

  • Go into player search, now edit your filter.
  • Add person age to be no more than 18.
  • Now click attributes within the filter.
  • Tick the work rate and determination attributes and change them to minimum of 12. (Check the important information below and decide if you want to use this step.)
  • Now click OK and order the list from most valuable to least valuable.
  • Click on all the players with a high value, anyone from Africa with a value of more than £1m could be worthwhile too.
  • Any players you like should be scouted. Then asses whether their worth a bid based on the report and your instincts.

Important information: My friend Thomas (FMPundit) wrote an extremely interesting post a while ago. It anylised some research within the FM community on players and their growth. His post proved that players with high work rate and determination reached their potential far more often than players with low work rate and determination. These two attributes are obviously key and should be considered when searching for regens.

Well I have offered you a few tools to find the right rocks to look under…now its up to you in terms of spotting the talent. Please feel free to ask any questions below and I look forward to reading your comments. If you feel I have missed any clubs that produce great regens, please comment below. I will add them to the list, but please be sure they have produced a lot of talent and not just one or two good regens.

Thanks Darren! This is the thing I have most trouble with! I am glad someone finally produce something to help me with this! If you don’t mind I would like to make a post on my page informing people to read this?

You’re welcome mate, finding the best regens means you can play the game longer. Since getting better at this my games have grown a lot longer and more successful so I felt like the rest of the community could gain something from it. Of course you can mention the post, there’s nothing wrong with publicity ;) Thanks

What you write here makes sense Darren, but even if I know they’re highly needed for a long term career, I really dislike them and their terrible AI generated faces, I think they take away realism from the game, notably when they’re provided with «monster» attributes.

    • Darren Smith

      1 мая, 2011 at 17:30

Hey Paine, let me start by saying this post isn’t about the realism of regens or their effect on the game. Its purely to offer tips on how to find them for those who struggle. While I agree with your points, the monster attributes can go a little far and the faces aren’t brilliantly done, I disagree with the overall point. In my opinion regens brings more reality to the game. I know their not real players, hence their unreal, but that is the only downside. Without them you’d have nothing to develop after four seasons and therefore no need for youth development. Real life managers are faced with finding new talent all the time. We, as gamers probably know where all the talent is after one game. However, regens are different every time so this brings another real life aspect to the game in finding players without knowing where or who they are.

Football Manager is such a great game because it never has to end, unlike most console games where there is always an end level. If you’re addicted to the game, you can carry on playing. Without regens this wouldn’t happen. Interesting topic though mate, I reckon everyone could offer a differing opinion. :) Thanks for the comment Paine.

I understand your point mate, I know they are needed and your tips point in the right direction, sometimes they could be better «generated» cause their attributes distribution is not so well balanced.

Young forwards with 18 for tackling and 7 for finishing are little Frankenstein….I know we could mould them for a different role but my opininion is that such a feature should be tuned by SI.

Then I agree about the introduction of unreal elements (regens) to make the game more realistic, it seems counterintuitive but it’s not.

          2 мая, 2011 at 09:07

Ahh now that is a point I do agree with. Have you noticed a real lack of regens with flair. Also some having great heading ability but shocking jumping ability. The distribution does need some work for sure. Also I found this amazing defender physically and mentally, but his tackling was like 5. SI do need to adjust this feature, and fine tune it for sure.

      2 мая, 2011 at 01:19

Darrens right they make the game very realistic and apart from them not being real 15 and 16 year old coming through your youth team it is still realistic as they are new players that you have never heard of which is exactly like real life

Great post Darren, the clubs you listed have been really helpful, I’ve just found no less than 5 players who I want to sign (and have bid for), all of them are regens with good potential. Cheers :)

No problem mate, I’m happy it helped. Great to see you found four regens too. Makes it all worth while :)

Thats a pretty useful guide to be honest, most of what you have said I do in my games already.

But for people who dont, or struggle to find the best young regenerated players its almost perfect!

Everyone should have a scout in Argentina and Brazil! They just always produce amazing players that you can sign very cheap but the other countries I agree with also.

Another great guide Darren, well done.

    :)

Thanks Ana, I think you can learn these tips on your own with some effort. But for those who struggle with regens I hope it helps. I agree with your Argentina/Brazil comment. Around 70% of the best regens come from south america. :)

I thought so. i do have an extra tip you could add to the post though when looking at some clubs its worth a try looking at regular mid table clubs like bolton and teams like that and checking what sort of youth facilities they have and if the yhave state of the art after a few years its always worth keeping an eye on them teams also wolves on all my games end up with some amazing regens

        • Darren Smith

          1 мая, 2011 at 23:12

Thanks Daniel, good tip there too. Unfortunately I’m only adding clubs though rather than changing the post. As for Wolves I have only seen them buy good regens rather than develop them. Thanks for the info mate.

Another club to look at in Africa:

ASEC(Ivory Coast). The Toure brothers, Drogba, Emmanuel Eboue, Romaric, etc came through this club’s academy and in FM they don’t dissapoint.

    2 мая, 2011 at 02:51

Great guide Darren, the thing I don’t use is going to some of those clubs mentioned, I barely go to Africa to look for regens but I will start to now. I just look for teams will youth recruitment at either well established or extensive, the 2 best rankings for youth recruitment. Great work Darren, keep it up!

    • Darren Smith

      2 мая, 2011 at 09:15

That’s another good way to do it mate. Clubs with established or extensive youth recruitment will find the best players. Hope you find some good players in Africa though mate. :) I found a great one on my Newcastle save and had the offer of £300K accepted, then his work permit stopped the move!!!

  9. CsAtlantis

    2 мая, 2011 at 03:24

Very nice tips Darren, there is also the option to let your scouts check out the U18s or U19s or U20s competition of a country you are interested in, and they will come over and recommend any players that perform impressively in those fixtures, and provide a scout report as well

Here are some more clubs for the list(if the countries are loaded), youth academy withvery good youth facilities (in game it’s at the same level as Dormund, Inter, Sevilla and Palmeiras at the start)
    Danubio — Uruguay
    Defensor Sporting — Uruguay
    Nacional — Uruguay
    Togliatti — Russia
    Akademia Dimitrovgrad — Russia

    • Darren Smith

      2 мая, 2011 at 09:23

Thanks CsAtlantis, sending scouts to youth competitions is another good way of finding regens. I think we’ll leave those clubs mentioned in this comments area. They all have great facilities and recruitment but if the country isn’t loaded their regens are none existent from what I’ve seen. However, I think if you loaded the countries there is potential there for sure. Thanks for the input .

Great post Darren, I’m not very surprised to see that we think alike on this matter :) I would add one thing though: it would be a good idea to try making one of those clubs your feeder club, that way you would get the first option on transfers.

I used all those tips before. Do you have some advice to get some better regens in my own club ? I’m struggling with a Lifeban game right now…

    • Darren Smith

      2 мая, 2011 at 17:21

I too have trouble with generating my own youth. I am now putting a long term plan into place with my Newcastle game though. Ask the board to improve your youth facilities and youth recruitment until there the best they can be. This is the best way of generating your own youth.

  15. Thomas

    2 мая, 2011 at 17:31

already did. I have the best facilities, but sometimes I have some really poor regens… (I’m not very proud, but now I save my game before the day of the new generations…)

    Hi Darren,

    Great and brillant post!

Just one thing, when sending scouts I don´t find useful at all sending them to regions as they scout any country they like, for me is better to send them to countries except for regions as usually there are countries that constantly have players(Austria-Belgium-Brazil) and others dont(Mali-Bolivia etc).

So I usually send the scouts to the bigger european leagues, to the eastern european countries, brazil, argentina, mexico and then to the better african teams like Ivory coast, Nigeria.

Anyway, for African-Asian and north American countries the best scouting I think is to scout the regional competitions.

Cheers and thanks for your post!

    • Darren Smith

      11 июня, 2011 at 22:44

Thanks Mariano, you do have a point. I tend to rotate my scouts between many different countries….but this system is far too complicated to explain in a post so I explained my other method. Thanks for sharing.

one problem i have is that regens from out of europe are very hard to sign when 15-17 due to work permit issues. i have in my game a player called julio cesar a winger/forward from brazil and i could have had him for around a million for 2 years but i could not get him untill he was 17 for 6 mill. now he is almost 18 and 2.5 stars and PA of 4.5. i take it there is no way of getting round this work permit problem other than to wait and pay more.

oh and his WR and determination is 19 and 20 and he never stops getting better..

    • Sears

      4 июля, 2011 at 18:23

I thought you could buy them but you would have had to loan them out for 3 years, like Chelsea did with Alex a few years back?

      • adamb

        4 июля, 2011 at 20:03

in real life you can but i have not found a way to do that on FM2011 as yet. i try to buy them then i appeal the decision if not granted and then the deal collapses i can buy some 16 yr olds but no 15 yr olds from out of europe and other euro teams buy them before me due to different work permit rules. if you know how to buy them and then loan i would be very greatfull.

        • Darren Smith

          5 июля, 2011 at 10:13

There are only the restrictions as in real life that I know of. I have bought countless 15 year olds from Brazil and Argentina but they will not join your club until 2-3 years later however the deal can be settled while their young and therefore saving the cash. I’ve only ever been rejected a work permit on crappy players, never ones with real talent. Afraid I’m not sure why these kids are having work permits rejected as I’ve never really had major problems in that area…bar Africa anyway. Sorry I couldn’t help Adamb

If you have a feeder club just send him to them if he fails his work permit aplication but still joins you.

          • Darren Smith

            10 августа, 2011 at 12:05

Problem with that is you rarely get to sign the player when they fail for a work permit.

            10 августа, 2011 at 18:38

Funny, i got this Brazilian from Inter called Kerlon (I think) and he still singed for me.

          • Darren Smith

            10 августа, 2011 at 19:15

That is because you bought him after he’d moved to Inter I assume which is different as they’ve been in Europe ‘x’ amount of years and on their way to qualifying for a work permit. However I haven’t heard of a playing moving from another continent after been refused a work permit. I may be wrong and if I am I’d love to hear a way around the pesky thing because I have missed out on some great players because of this annoying rule.

    • Darren Smith

      15 июля, 2011 at 12:22

You should add Inverness, I got a regen with 4 star potential abillity.

    • Darren Smith

      10 августа, 2011 at 12:04

Nahh, you only had one good regen and that doesn’t mean they generate a lot of them. Every club can get one or two good regens. I am writing about the ones that produce almost every year and I haven’t seen Inverness produce anyone as yet.

Let me know if you find somewhere that provides a lot of quality regens mate, I’m happy to add to the list. Just don’t want to add clubs where gamers may be wasting their time most years.

Found 1 with 3 and a half PA and 2 with 3 PA.

          • Darren Smith

            9 сентября, 2011 at 18:53

That PA sounds pretty good, but which team is that PA rating with? In other words what sort of players are the scouts comparing them too because the star rating can be deceiving. Most decent regens have a 3 PA rating from a scout…but if they are been compared to Messi then that PA rating means more. It also comes down to if the scout thinks they could be a leading star in the top division and if the regen has the potential to be at least similar to the best players in the world.

  24. Alun Vaughan

    11 августа, 2011 at 17:03

The problem is with the regens is that the game becomes so easy after a while.
For example, my current account is in year 2035 or something and my team just wins every trophy year in, year out without much effort because it is so easy to find the best young players over and over again.
With the 2012 edition they need to make the game becomes more realistic after all the real players have retired because scouting the regens is too easy and the game just becomes a bore when constantly winning with ease.

    • Darren Smith

      11 августа, 2011 at 18:43

I agree that the game gets easier in terms of beating your opponent, but this is just because your team gets better and better while the opponents never seem to progress and just digress. I think thats what SI need to change, the development of clubs like Chelsea who seem to be transfer market idiots on the game whereas in real life they swoop for all kinds of great players.

Darren thanks for this awesome guide…

darren can i ask something..i play MAN U in my first year, and try to use only regen in the future, i found regen in france only 14 and 15 years old. should i sign them now,or when they reach 17/18 years old. Also when i try to sign, their club set prices at 19 million,is that because they are in the first year of their contract?

No problem Anza, I would suggest signing a regen whenever you’re confident of their ability and potential. The earlier you sign them the cheaper they’ll be (this applies if they’re under 19.) I don’t know why the club would set a price so high, probably because of their talent but I had a similar problem with one particular player who was at Real Madrid in FM 2011. I bided my time and three years later signed him for £10 million less, so its just about timing really.

I made this guide based around FM11 but didn’t label it so because the majority should be the same. As for the regeneration dates I haven’t checked to see how close they are this year but they should be similar to last year, if not the same.

I have sent a brazillian scout to scout west africa, his rating for judging ability and potential are 18 & 19 respectively. He has been on assignment for around 2-3 months now and has found nothing. How much of a difference does it make that his knowledge of the region is well. . . non-existent? Btw great site and thanks in advance

You will find very few regens in Africa anyway, they produce very little tbh. But sending a Brazilian will hamper what you find as the scouts knowledge is very important.

        Africa is an interesting one…

I’ve found a few good regens: I think at the moment 2 strikers, a midfielder, a defender and a goalkeeper are from Africa. Scouts always give them 2-2.5 star potential but I check stats to see if they’re any good. They’re cheap too, which is a bonus.

The defender is a beast :) scores on average a goal every 2 games from corners.

I always check Inter for regens because they produced this 19 year old that won Balon D’Or at 17-19. His name was Hernen Roca a left defender with 5 star potential at Real Madrid but commanded wages of 600K p/w. Also Noe Schneider another LB at Inter with 4 and a1/2 star rating at Real Madrid

Yeah they can produce good regens, obviously the regens will be different in every single save but certain clubs tend to provide the best ones.

Siena in my game also produce 4 to 4.5 star youngsters( i do not have the Italian league playable )

That is not a common thing though, they do not provide brilliant youngsters every season in every save.

    Great article!!

I just have one question. Are all regens 15-17 years old?

Or there can be some great regens also 21-22 years old?

    Thanks.

    Sorry for my english..

Honest answer is I’m not 100% sure but I’ve never noticed anyone been generated older than 17 or 18 years old.

African regens tend to be older. 18-20 usually.
