Hey guys, I have recently provided you with an Arsenal orientated tactic. This tactic created some attractive and possession play football very similar to Arsenal’s real life style. Well today’s FM 2012 top tactic couldn’t be more different, over the last week I have been testing and preparing a Football Manager 2012 Stoke City tactic. This boasts a direct style of play, a bulldozer like mentality, some dogged defending and very unique set pieces that could only be claimed by Stoke. We’ll start by explaining how this FM12 traditional 4-4-2 works then move onto my results using this tactic, in game video and finally the download itself.
The Formation
Tony Pulis very rarely switches from a traditional 4-4-2 boasting three flat lines. Therefore I have based this FM 2012 Stoke tatic around a flat 4-4-2, it may look plain but carry on reading and you’ll see the important details as we go along. Let’s start with player roles.
GK (Role = Goalkeeper, Duty = Defend) — Stoke don’t really play with a high defensive line and you’ll rarely see their Keeper rushing off his line to clear a through ball. Therefore the Goalie is just standard.
DR, DL (Role = Full Back, Duty = Automatic) — Stoke tend to play with a balanced philosophy, meaning their back four defend and help with transitional play as opposed to gunning forward at every opportunity. However, the two full backs do move along the line if required. A full back role with automatic duty will mean their movement is depicted from the overall strategy. If you want to attack they will attack, if you want to defend then they will defend.
DCR, DCL (Role = Limited Defender, Duty = Defend) — Tony Pulis likes his centre backs to do a traditional job and concentrate on keeping the ball away from their goal. The limited role will assign both CB’s to clear the ball on site and make sure no one gets through. No fancy stuff and certainly no playing out from the back. You need two very tall and strong centre backs for this position and the DCL position should be filled by your best header of the ball and most dangerous in the air (he is important from set pieces.)
MCR (Role = Box to Box Midfielder, Duty = Support) — Stoke like to get the ball forward to the target man quickly or play down the wings. They rarely mess around in the middle, this means that both CM’s could be left useless and playing a minor role. However, Pulis assigns one of his midfielders the box to box role which means he is responsible for all duties and therefore covers a lot of ground. This player needs stamina and a good all round game. He may arrive late in the box as support so long shots and general shooting ability could help.
MCL (Role = Ball Winning Midfielder, Duty = Defend) — Tony’s system usually includes a power house midfielder to bully the ball back. This guy needs to be strong with great tackling and marking skills. Pace is also a bonus as he is responsible for winning the ball back alone.
MR, ML (Role = Winger, Duty = Attack) — Both wingers are used for attacking purposes alone, with the full backs concentrating on defending this leaves both wingers to do what they do best. Stoke like their wingers to stick out wide and get lots of crosses in. Therefore, you need pace with dribbling attributes to beat your man, great crossing ability to take advantage of the tall target man and a little flair would also help. While most of the team should be giant ogres, these two wingers are the little stars that need to represent the magic and spark of your team.
STCR (Role = Complete Forward, Duty = Support) I have one word to describe this role, Crouch!! The lanky target man epitomizes what you need and what Stoke like to use. This player is the one to receive the ball then decide whether to pass or score himself. He must be huge, strong and aerially supreme. Having said that a little bit of footwork is required and he must be able to hit the net. Remember I have set this guy as the teams target man and centre of attention during set pieces so make him great in the air.
STCL (Role = Poacher, Duty = Attack) — What do you need if the complete forward manages to knock a ball on? That’s right, you need a fast poacher to take advantage. :) This guy won’t consider defending or supporting for a second. All day long he’ll look for the loose ball or take it on himself. You need great finishing, dribbling and pace for this role. However, due to Stoke’s set pieces this guy needs some sort of aerial ability but its not completely vital.
Team Instructions
While Stoke never seem to be all out attack they aren’t afraid of getting forward and taking the game to their opponents. Therefore a balanced philosophy and standard strategy have been assigned to best replicate Stoke’s style. Their passing style is no secret and must obviously be set to ‘direct’ while each player does seem to press the opponent so closing down is set to ‘press more’. Pulis definitely uses a ‘man marking’ system and he sends his players out to tackle ‘more aggressive’ and ruffle the oppositions feathers. Due to the teams general height you’ll notice Stoke floating high crosses through the air and I have selected ‘float crosses’ for crossing to emulate this. Last but certainly not least I set the passing focus to ‘down both flanks’ as Pulis likes his wingers to attack the wings and they seem to provide the best balls.
Playmaker: Pennant (strongest winger MR or ML)
Target man: Crouch (Complete forward, STCR)
Target man supply: Mixed
Set Pieces
I won’t talk about set pieces here as I’ve already written an in depth set piece guide displaying all the settings required to mimic Stoke’s corner kick’s, throw-ins and free-kicks. Just click the link to view my FM 2012 set piece guide and the settings used in this tactic.
Important notes
Remember this tactic is based purely on Stoke City so if you’re downloading it for a different team you need one with real strength, height and the ability to cause trouble from set pieces. The most important areas are upfront where you need a Crouch/Dzeko like forward partnered by a real poacher with pace. Then on the wings you must have pace mixed with major crossing ability. Last of all your two centre backs need to be solid and similar to Shawcross and Huth. If you download this tactic be aware that I have assigned set piece positions based on particular players so that will need checking. This tactic works a treat with Stoke, watch the video below for proof. :)
FM 2012 Stoke tactic video — click here to see the results
If the video above isn’t enough, try looking through my first 17 matches. Not only does this tactic emulate the Stoke City of real life but provides some outstanding results if used correctly.
Click the download image below to be redirected to the download page then follow the ‘how to install’ instructions.
How to Install
Download the file to Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2012 demo\tactics, obviously you will save the tactic into the official game when its released as opposed to the demo file. Then in the game go to the tactics screen and load it from the «archived tactics». The tactic is named ‘Stoke 4-4-2’.

I actually believe you’re a genius when it comes to converting real tactics into FM, well done again :)

Thanks for the compliment Dan. I just love Footie and FM is a massive part of that. I see converting real life tactics into FM as a challenge and intriguing puzzle, there’s nothing better than seeing those little men replicate what you see on the big screen :)

Dan — please can you do a tactic for Chelsea? I’m struggling to get them going :-))
Darren Smith

I’ll see what I can do but until then I suggest trying my Arsenal tactic with Chelsea as it may work well https://www.footballmanagerstory.com/2011/10/football-manager-2012-arsenal-tactic-play-the-passing-game/ Its Darren by the way :)

Sorry Darren!
I tried your Arsenal formation for Chelsea and it worked quite well. I tried tinkering to customise for Chelsea and eventually got sacked in season 2. Roman expects results!
How much do you tinker with your succesful tactics to accomodate second choice players who don’t quite fit the role? Do you find that the game works out your formation after a while and therefore you need to develop a new one in, say, season 2?
Darren Smith
15 ноября, 2011 at 18:47
I only ever tinker with my tactic if I can see the new role suiting the team unit….ie I have Canales as second string CM to Badelj. I use that particular position as central midfield support to suit the tactic best and make it work, however Canales is more suited to an advanced playmaker role. I don’t change the tactic and would sooner sell a player to be honest. If you change roles within a tactic then you are changing the shape you have tried to form which in turn could effect other stuff too.

Absolutely fantastic tactic.Great indeed!!!Tried in Leicester (CH) and i had the most enjoyable season ever in game.1st place in league with 10 points away from 2nd, league cup winner (no cheating), semi finalist in English Cup.I can tell you works 100% and mostly you don’t need any special abilities from your players.Fantastic job!!!

Hi Darren
Two for Two…a great post yet again and once more you have proven your worth as a master tactican. Encouraging to see some good results with a 442 as this one has similarities to my Wrexhm tactic in terms of player roles which is what i plan to use with Plymouth.
Darren Smith
15 октября, 2011 at 21:12
Thanks Kevin. The more I test these tactics the more my opinion on how to approach them changes. Its actually more about the right players than the right roles. Without Crouch as the complete forward, Pennant on the right and taking set pieces and Shotton taking the long throws this tactic wouldn’t work. Those three players are ones I’d never sign but assigning them all player specific roles just seems to work.Take advantage of every players strength and you’ll soon form an unstoppable unit even if the overall squad isn’t spectacular.

Whilst it’s great that you are emulating real life by creating tactics, you are giving a false impression that you are amazing with tactics when, in fact, this is relatively straightforward to do.
As well as this, Sports Interactive always make the demo a lot easier than the full version as to attract people rather than repel them by showing the true difficulty of the game. Therefore the results you have achieved with Stoke prove nothing. I’m sure if this tactic were to be implemented in the proper game that is released in 5 days, we would see a mixed bag of results that suggest mid-table mediocrity.
Also, why only the first 17 matches? I assume the matches hidden from the public’s view were more reflective of Stoke’s ability, which is top 10 at best, so you decided to cut it out.
I’m sure this comment will be deleted due to its negativity towards you Darren, but please don’t and respond accordingly to every point I’ve made.
Regards,
Bill
Darren Smith
16 октября, 2011 at 09:18
lol, OK Bill. I don’t know what ‘issues’ you want addressing to be honest but I’ll try and entertain your comment.
First off I’m not trying to do anything but emulate the clubs tactics, I’m not trying to give any false impressions just make the tactic and if it works I post it with my results. I agree it is very straight forward to do and I don’t know why you turn that into a negative. I won’t argue your point about the demo been easier than the real game as there’s no official way of knowing and I’m not arrogant enough to make such claims. However, even if it is I think the results demonstrate that the tactic at least holds its own.
I only played the first 17 games before feeling I had tested the tactic enough so there’s your answer to that.
As for your negativity towards me, well that’s your problem but as long as comments are constructive they won’t be deleted. This comment was rather pointless in an attempt to discredit me but you put a little effort in so I thought I’d do the same with my answers.
Bill
16 октября, 2011 at 10:55
I have no ‘issues’ nor did I ask you to address any ‘issues’, I made some fair points and wanted you to respond to this, and you have so I appreciate that.
You don’t create a tactic just to emulate real life, you are doing this to try and act like a tactical genius.
The demo is easier, it’s a fact, don’t call me arrogant because that was a cheap shot due to my comment being something different to ‘Amazing work’ or ‘Well done Darren’.
Fair enough if you only played those games, but it’s very strange you didn’t bother to test it for the rest, especially since that would give a better view on the tactic and consistency.
I didn’t say I was negative towards you, just that the comment wasn’t exactly positive. The comment wasn’t pointless, again another poor attempt to get at me.
Darren Smith
16 октября, 2011 at 11:41
Those cheap shots were in response to yours mate so don’t give me that. I create tactics to help people and because I enjoy doing so, the fact you assume someone would do it to look good shows your arrogance. Both comments have been a poor attempt to make me feel bad and it’s not appreciated. You didn’t have any questions or anything to say that was helpful, hence your comment was pointless and I’d like to enjoy my day off from work as opposed to reading offensive comments. I don’t know what your aim was with these interactions but you obviously aren’t much of a fan so I suggest you stop commenting and wasting peoples time.
TheZiggy
16 октября, 2011 at 15:57
I have to laugh, because at no point in the reply, did Darren call you arrogant. Guess seeing the word «arrogant» being used, made you misread things.
While everyone seems to agree, that this isn’t difficult to do, there are some people who struggle to look at team and see how their style relates to the settings in game. This is a useful comparison for someone who wants to set up a team with a style similar to Stoke.
Darren Smith
16 октября, 2011 at 16:02
Thanks Ziggy, that is right. Not everyone understands how the tactics work and what you must remember is most people searching through google are wanting these tips or they wouldn’t be searching for them. Unfortunately some people think we are writing for one type of gamer alone.

Mate why come on here and post a complete negative post. Where has darren said hes a tactical genius at FM in fact when has he ever started boasting about these tactics hes made. Well done Darren. Do throw-ins work quite a lot?
Darren Smith
16 октября, 2011 at 09:10
The throw-ins do work quite well Vaibhav. Although not in the way I had thought. As opposed to the ball landing on players heads it tends to land at the forwards feet, but still creates goals.

Brilliant work Darren, well done! It’s not a tactic that I would use because you know how I like my teams to play but this one could be extremely useful for a lot of people.
Darren Smith

Thanks Johnny, I think it works quite well and the best part is how it seems to replicate Stoke which is what I was aiming for. Hopefully this will help some gamers.
Alex
16 октября, 2011 at 12:13
Nice work Darren, I can see the rough style of play works well, I guess the AI has trouble dealing with this very direct way of playing. May I ask how many goals Crouch has scored in the amount of games he’s played?
To be honest, I’m not a fan of the new logo. I see it and think ‘FM Base’ which makes me think you copied them. I’m sorry if you didn’t copy, it’s just what I think at first glance.
Darren Smith
16 октября, 2011 at 15:29
Thanks Alex, I always struggled with the direct game but have found it easier to create in FM12 so far. As for Crouch he has scored 8 goals in 15 matches and Walters (my poacher) has scored 11 from 15.
I couldn’t disagree more about the logo. I think it looks excellent and the only resemblance to FM-Base is the logo includes a ball of some sort. The shape, colour and design is completely different. Johnny hired a professional graphics designer to make it, after suggesting our thoughts he came up with a few options so there was certainly no copying involved.

hey Darren…sorry to be pestering you about the Manchelona here. But did you ever change the starting strategy from ‘Attacking’ to something else if you were say in a cup final, or if you were playing a very very good team away (the likes of Barca, ManUtd, Milan etc)? Also, could you give me your opinion on some regens if i post the links to their images jere?
Darren Smith
16 октября, 2011 at 15:31
Hey Malhar, I never changed my strategy while managing Newcastle because the squad was strong enough to maintain my attacking style without been too risky at the back. However during the early Brighton days I did switch the strategy from time to time but stuck with attacking in my last season.
I’m happy to look at the regens if you provide me the links mate.

New aim for the new FM2012: build a team that can use both Stoke and Arsenal tactics!
Could always use the throw-in tactics, I think for FM2011 i just threw one central defender forward and threw the ball in his general direction :P
Darren Smith
17 октября, 2011 at 11:51
lol, now that would be a very interesting tactic. Although I’m not sure if its possible as both teams are the complete opposite. :) The throw-ins should work on FM 2011 yeah, I just tried to throw forward the same bodies as Stoke would in real life.

Maybe trying to play like Arsenal but using all the Stoke set piece tactics, who knows, it could be fun (or funny)

I reckon that may work with a team like Man City. They have Toure, Richards, Kompany, Dzeko etc and can play the silky game as well.

Hey Darren nice tactic! :D if you remember i’m trying out the liverpool tactic, it’s working fine at the moment!:D
However at the same time for some reason I just can’t play 3D matches on my comp in either FM11 or FM12!? even though it says under preferences that my computer is 4 stars compatible for 3D…any ideas why? thanks!
Darren Smith
17 октября, 2011 at 11:49
I remember mate and glad to hear the tactic is working. Not sure what you 3D problem is, when you say it isn’t working what exactly happens. Does it just not let you select the 3D options? Can you provide as much detail as pos and I’ll look into it.
Marcko
18 октября, 2011 at 04:03
Hmm basically what happens is if i click play after the team talk and opp instructions, the whole game just freezes and my computer hangs…i then have to switch off the computer by the power button and the only way to continue the game is by playing it in 2D instead…takes a lot out of the fun though):

I said in your arsenal tatics about stoke!…althought it was a joke…I’m pleased you have done this…
Its easy to play beautiful football as Barcelona/Arsenal..etc etc….but to play the ‘Stoke Way’ also requires some tactical nous…and its clearly a winner as your results show…
Considering Big Sams signings at west ham…my west ham save in FM12 will be similar to this lol…
Dont listen to all the hate Darren…you are a valued member of this community and because certain people don’t understand they start hating towards you…
I’m devastated that your stories have taken a break…but these guides are fantastic…by no means should they taken as gospel…but they provide alot of framework on which we can tweak to our own tastes…
At the end of the day (couldn’t help include a footballing cliche) its a virtual game…whilst addictive everyone will play a different way and thats why its so interesting to hear how different people do and their stories…
Keep up the great work…
Darren Smith
17 октября, 2011 at 11:47
Well I hope this will work for your West Ham game mate. The likes of Carew and Cole will work wonders thats for sure!
Thanks for the support mate, I do appreciate it. As the site grows so will the negative readers but as long as they keep their thoughts to themselves we’ll have no problems. It may come across bad but I have a zero tolerance for negative people and time wasters. When reading comments that are pointless other than to make someone feel bad I tend to feel the urge to ban the users ip, but that isn’t my call anymore. Anyway, thanks again for the support Tom, as you said its all about sharing our interest in a hobby and nothing else. :)

One of the reasons I like this website is the fact that it doesn’t have comments sections filled with ‘Your Sh*ite..’ etc etc…
Its a great community on here thats helps others and has interesting stories…the guides are great and all the people who input to it deserve a pat on the back from the time and effort…
Love the new layout…

Hi Darren, seems like an excellent tactic. I have used a couple of different styles of play in FM11, one very similar to your manchelona and another direct counter attacking system which worked a treat with my hearts team against bigger opposition (old firm and europe). These guides are a good way in helping people understand how to emlulate a teams style of play. It would be good to have a guide to designing a tactic to work with a squad you have inherited as well. How to pick out strengths etc.
An enjoyable read as always, keep up the good work mate

Thanks mate, I like your idea about a guide on how to create tactics with what you’ve inherited. Will look into that but it may take some time. I’ll be taking a break this week then working like a beaver to provide you guys with some player profiles come the weekend. I won’t make a decision on which team I’ll base my next tactic on until the time gets nearer. Thanks again mate.

hi darren great post..made me ask myself a couple of questions…can u answer these please…
1)what d u think was ur mistake that lead to ur 3-0 defeat vs bolton???
2)do you change from ‘counter’ to ‘standard’ or to ‘control’ b4 matches depending on ur opponents??
junior
17 октября, 2011 at 17:48
sorry darren and one more question..
say u were up against barcelona…would you keep the same strategy??tactics, instructions etc…
if not, what changes would u have made??
Darren Smith
17 октября, 2011 at 18:25
Hey Junior, I’ll answer your questions from the first comment first. I don’t think anything went wrong tactically against Bolton, the team just didn’t turn up and performed awfully. I reckon my team talks were wrong which led to them lacking motivation for that particular match. I have never changed my strategy no matter who the opponent is…this tactic only works if you have players in support of the target man therefore playing on the counter wouldn’t be wise as the target man would have fewer players around him to pick up the loose flick ons.
Now for your second comment. I would always keep the strategy the same, the only time I’d change is if the team were struggling and the changes would go by what I see going wrong on the pitch.
Jimbo Mahoney
15 ноября, 2011 at 14:13
Do you need to do team talks yourself? Or can it be just as effective to let you assistant? …I try and do the minimum outside of buying/selling players and match day tactics. But it’s useful to know what shouldn’t be ignored. For example, I think you can leave the training running automatically once you’ve got the right coaches doing the right sessions. Not must benefit in tinkering considering the time required. I thought the same applied for the assistant with team talks. Also, never really bother with shouts. Which areas do you think require the most attention? Set pieces is one recommendation I will be spending more time on for example….
Darren Smith
15 ноября, 2011 at 18:44
I would always suggest doing team talks yourself as it can change the outcome of a match…in fact heres a guide that may help https://www.footballmanagerstory.com/2011/10/football-manager-2012-team-talk-guide-pre-match-half-time-and-full-time/
I would say the most important parts are actually team talks, your tactic and getting the right players.
Alexander
17 октября, 2011 at 19:15
These results are incredible; I had always wondered whether it was possible to not only emulate Stoke’s tactics but to also achieve success in doing so. Is this solely down to the tactic or did you also make some class signings? The only thing I notice that may not be completely accurate to the real life Stoke are the striking roles you have assigned. From the Stoke matches I have watched, the target man (Crouch) is the man who stays forward whilst the other striker (Walters) drops back to help the midfield when they lose the ball. Perhaps it would be more accurate if STR was changed to attack and STL was changed to defensive forward support. What do you think?
Darren Smith

I just signed Diouf as cover on the wings, bar that no signings what so ever. I do agree about the STL position, that role is usually a little deeper, but I needed to sacrifice that a little to make the tactic work. Using him as a defensive forward would be closer to real life but wasn’t as effective unfortunately.

Hey Darren Sorry took so long to reply took a break from the computer yesterday and now I’m catching up lol. Nice work mate. I saw some of the comments and i would like to say i appreciate the time and work that goes into your post. When i started playing Football Manager your help and guides with Johnny has really helped.

hey darren..ive seen a couple of suggestions for your next post…i had an idea myself…some people dnt knw how important teamtalks are..you are very successful in fm so maby a post team talk and how to choose the proper one’s..
jst a suggestion
Darren Smith
21 октября, 2011 at 11:52
That would be a great idea mate but its near impossible to do properly. There are so many different scenarios in which you’d do a team talk and they all vary on the players, club, division, fatigue, previous performance, morale…the list goes on mate!! To do a proper guide in true Darren style won’t work. Although I’ll keep thinking of an easy way to present it.

What can I say, stoke is not a good team and looking at player ratings, AND results, I am very disappointed with fm 2012, because it would mean its too easy, stoke is a mediocre team, and if such simple tactics and not great players give such a result its just sad.
Darren Smith
21 октября, 2011 at 11:59
Bar Liverpool, Tottenham and Man City those fixtures were against easy opposition to be honest and many people suggest the demo is much easier than the full version. You need to remember its all about the combination of using the right tactics with the right players…while Stoke aren’t capable of such a run they are capable of those individual results in real life. Also remember how well Hull City did during the first quarter of their first EPL season?
Or failing that just don’t buy the game…

Hi Darren.
First off I’d like to say thanks for the time you’ve put into these tactics and set pieces.
Of course the tactics don’t always have the desired effect as you need the players that can play the roles of the tactics and set pieces.
But, I found that the set pieces almost work every single time.
I’ve tried the set pieces with 3 different teams now and they are (almost) perfect.
My scoring from set pieces have gone up 300-400% per season.
Now, the Stoke tactic I use as a nice block in the last 20-30 minutes of a game when I’m in a lead against a stronger opponent, the tactic seems to kinda put a stop to the AI’s push that they like to do later in the games when behind.
Now a few questions that I hope you don’t mind.
1 — Have you to this point in time made any other tactics that you would like to share, and if so where can I get them?
2 — What is your preferred use of Tackling/Close Down (hard/easy and so on) , And marking?
Do you use specifics or teamwide settings or do you plan these according to players strengths?
fun2bwith
8 ноября, 2011 at 22:40
Oh yes Darren, I forgot something in my last post.
I was thinking about something that I have tried to google ever since they got implemented into the game … » Shouts » …Do you have preferred pre-match shouts that you use? Do use change shouts or use certain shouts during games, if so which and when?
I know this is alot to ask of you — I wish someone would make a little «Shouts Guide» :D
Thanks in advance — fun2bwith

Hey mate, thanks for the kind words. I’ll try and answer your questions in order.
1 — Other tactics can be found here https://www.footballmanagerstory.com/category/fm-2012-tactic/ Scroll to the bottom for my Arsenal tactic.
2 — I like to keep tackling ‘default’, closing down ‘often’ and I generally set my settings as a team. Ow as for marking that depends on the tactic, if it negative then man marking, if its an attacking tactic then zonal.
3 — As for the shouts I will look into that for a guide of some sort. :)

Great tactic. I think this will work well with the current Liverpool squad too, with Carroll in the target man role and Gerrard as a box to box player.
I have one question though: why do you give crouch a complete forward role? Isn’t he a typical target man? What is exactly the difference?
Eduard
Darren Smith
4 декабря, 2011 at 14:18
Yeah it would make more sense to have Crouch as target man and I tried that option but the tactic doesn’t work as well. I tested lots of different options and while target man sounds right it doesn’t prove to play right in the match engine with the other settings..

BTW, what is best, insvinging corners, for your set pieces? And what about free kicks, left legged in left side?

I wanted to know, if you use right footed player in left side corner, and left footed in right corner?
Hope this makes sence. :)
Darren Smith
30 декабря, 2011 at 10:46
I see, I would try and use a right footed player taking corners from the left and left footed from the right so that the ball is swinging towards the goal as opposed to away from it.

Hi Mate would you say this tactic still works at the moment on the new patch? And would i have good success with Wolves. Hope you can reply soon as.
Also, could you be a complete gem and come up with a Martin O’Neill counter attacking tactic of which he did while at Villa and seems to be using to same effect now at Sunderland?
Cheers.

I haven’t tested it so couldn’t say I’m afraid but it should work on the current patch and as for Wolves, well you’d need to try it.

Hey Darren,
I recently purchased the game and game across this site. It looks great! And will be particularly helpful to people like me who are a bit rubbish and struggle with getting tactics to work.
This system looks pretty good and I was thinking of trying it with my West Ham side. I’ve been tinkering with the tactics all season as we’ve been a bit inconsistent. Do you recommend keeping the same tactics/style of play for every game or do you change depend on the opposition? Apologies if I’m repeating stuff you’ve already covered, any advice would be muchly appreciated. All the best mate
Darren Smith
7 января, 2012 at 13:12
Hey Chip, glad we can help you. I personally try and stick by the same tactic all season if possible but sometimes it can be more complicated than that. For a starter I would recommend keeping the same tactic throughout and to be honest I’d recommend this tactic https://www.footballmanagerstory.com/2011/10/football-manager-2012-arsenal-tactic-play-the-passing-game/ because your team have superior skills to the rest of the Championship and should be able to dominate with the ball at their feet rather than relying on a long lofted ball forward. P.S. If you want players this is your site https://www.footballmanagerstory.com/scout There’s almost 100 players profiled there including their future profile screenshot and three lists rating different players for their quality and value.

9 января, 2012 at 20:36
Thanks Darren, that Arsenal tactic worked a treat and I won the Championship this season! I was able to dominate the lesser sides, which is something I had been struggling to do. I did create a lot of chances using that tactic but we weren’t very good at putting the ball in the net.
Next season I will switch to the Stoke tactic as being in the Premiership is going to be a lot tougher I reckon. Will look for a decent target man as I don’t think Carew will cut it in the Prem. That list of players you linked me to might well prove very handy, especially as I don’t think I’ll have much money to spend! Thanks dude

Darren Smith
27 января, 2012 at 18:27
I guess it could but think Athletic would be more suited to a short passing game to be honest. As for shouts, telling them to use the flanks works if you see weakness from the opposition in that area or get the ball forward and get stuck in.

Despite reading from this site since July 2011, I’ve only come across this tactic now, and I must say it’s worked close to perfection. Walters works perfectly as a poacher, and the support from the flanks is just fantastic. Avoiding the trapdoor shouldn’t be a problem now. Nicely done Darren!

Thanks mate, I think this tactic is very much for a certain type of manager, which is usually the case when you base it around a club like Stoke…but when used correctly I think it can be very effective so nice to hear good feedback.

Hey Darren
Thanks for the tactic. I started a new game in South Africa’s National First Division and built my FCAK team around this Stoke tactic.
The players struggled to get used to it in the first half of the season, but once they gained familiarity, they did phenomenally well! We won the NFD in my first season at the club! I’m about a third of the way through my first season in the PSL and we’re holding our own admirably, about mid table.
It’s quite a challenge to find big strong players in South Africa (where I’m from btw) but that also means the opposition usually can’t compete in the air since I snap up all the big burly men :D Really enjoying this brutish tactic. Many thanks!

Hi Darren, few questions if you could be so kind.
Do you think changing the side of which CM is a ball winner and box to box would damage anything? And likewise with the two strikers? Only I have a kind of OCD of my players being on there favoured sides. Also, don’t you think a ‘complete forward’ is a bit too flairy for a simple target man? It means he will roam around and have the freedom of almost like a deep lying forward. I don’t get that role if I’m honest when you are describing a Crouch like figure. A target man with support seems to make more sense TBH.
Also, do you think it would affect much if I have the wingers swapping wings? Only I like to keep my full backs guessing.
Thirdly, do you change the strategy often? If so, to what?
And lastly do you combine any shouts with this tactic?
Thankyou very much if you can manage to get through those questions
:)
Darren Smith
20 февраля, 2012 at 20:23
Hey Adam, changing the side of which the midfield and forwards roles are wouldn’t be a problem but just be sure to check the set pieces are still set to suit the players abilities. As for the CF I understand what you mean but the tactic just didn’t work with a target man and that is why I had to change it. Crouch played more like his RL counterpart as complete forward than he did target man.
I never change the strategy, the only shouts I’d use are ‘get ball forward’ and ‘get stuck in’ if you’re struggling to make an impact going forward or ‘retain possession’ and ‘hassle opponents’ if you want to hold a slim lead late on.

I like this tactic. So far I have managed to remain unbeaten with Athletic Bilbao in Away games in La Liga and Europa League but I have yet to meet the Big Guns in either competition. Hi Darren do you think changing the defenders do standard ‘CD’ and focused passing to mixed would have much effect/improve the tactic? Hope you can reply soon as because i am hoping to start a save with this tactic tonight.

Hello Darren,
I just recently stumbled upon this website while searching for useful tips for playing FM12 and I got to say that this website been wonderful, your profiles on wonderkids and who are value for money have been great, the tactics have been amazing, my team can just stop winning.
Before, I wasn’t that enthusiastic or addictive playing FM12 because I was a complete noob in these types of games, although I did played well a couple of saves, but there was no consistency as I did not know the in-depth of the managing game, however, that all changed thanks to your wonderful website with its tips, and now I can stop playing the game! Hi Darren,
Do you think that zonal marking or default would work with this? In real life I think Stoke focus on keeping their shape and use zonal but I know that with this game engine, man marking is like a more aggressive zonal. Been messing around with both but can’t decide which works best.
Thanks
Darren Smith
29 мая, 2012 at 11:39
I don’t know as it hasn’t been tested, you’d have to try and see what happens, it might work.
As for roaming etc I just set everything to appear how I see Stoke play but in the match engine…certain settings that might make sense don’t actually make the team play like Stoke in real life.

I think I have figured out the marking systems (in my mind anyway). In zonal the defensive player waits for the offensive player to enter their zone before picking him up, where in man to man the defensive player is more aggressive, seeks out and moves toward the offensive player closest to him and marks him. You are correct within this match engine man marking is a more realistic depiction of how Stoke defend.
Darren Smith
1 июня, 2012 at 18:49
For me zonal marking is where the players mark a zone and when a player enters their zone they will pick him up and the same goes for the ball…whereas man marking is where each player is assigned one man to mark no matter what, on FM if you don’t assign a man to mark for each player he will indeed catch the nearest one too him and stick. But in real life each player is usually assigned someone before the match, which I couldn’t be bothered with in game to be honest ;)

Darren Smith
11 июня, 2012 at 12:06
Having a better team won’t make a difference but having different types of players will. All the Stoke players are of a certain type and part of their makeup comes from not been Worldclass, but if you find better players with the same style it should still work.

Hello,
Excellent article and tactic. I am using it with my Luton Town save. So far it is going well, though not overly so — lying 5th place in first season after 10 games.
I am a bit curious about match preparation. Do you have any suggestions on level and focus area to pair up with this tactic?

20 июня, 2012 at 00:00
Hey Thomas. Assuming you’re using the Long Throw set piece tactic, then the shortest pitch possible would be best! If you are Stoke on your game then you shouldn’t have a problem as the current pitch dimensions are already the smallest allowed. Good luck!

I’m new at FM, never played before. I’ve been a fan of your website for the last 2/3 months.
I’ve been using M’boro for the last 4 seasons. I kinda adopted the same tactic as this one i guess but with some tweak of mine.
We finished 2nd on second season, and i won nPower manager of year award. Then stayed up in EPL for another season(15th) before finishing 10th on the next one, and winning League CUp, and EPL manager of the year.. :) I didn’t do many signings, most of them were loaned. no cheating.
Is it common in FM to win managerial award like i did? The thing that i like with this type of tactic is it’s effectiveness n compactness of the team. Sometimes we didn’t even control possession but out of nowhere we scored like 2 or 3 goals from counter attack which makes me happy. haha. totenham battered us but we beat them 4-1 away. Loll.
I feel like woy hodgson now. Thanks for your time building n sharing knowledge on this site.
Bravo!!
