Football Manager 2012 set piece guide — score from corners, free-kicks and throw-ins

Hey guys, I have a little treat for you today. We all know that set pieces can make a real difference in Football Manager 2012 and I have done some testing to bring you a little guide. This Football Manager 2012 set piece guide is based on Stoke and all my testing has been done with them. We all know how powerful Stoke are from set pieces and they seem to score from any scenario whether it be corners, free-kicks or even throw-ins. I am delighted to say I’ve managed to recreate Stoke’s success from real life and provided you have the correct players this guide will get your team scoring from every type of FM 2012 set pieces you can think of. I know these can be a pain to set up but I’ve done the hard work and you can see the results from the video below.

FM 2012 set piece guide — How to score from corners

To kick things off we’ll start with my corner routine and I’ll take you through each step of how to set this up. Let me start by explaining what type of players are required to take your corners. Your corner takers must have high attributes in corners and crossing but technique can also be a bonus. These attributes need to be 15 or above for an effective delivery. Now we’ll move onto the delivery and each players role in the set piece.

Cross aim: six yard box (you need a tall team for this setting, otherwise the far post may be a better option.)

3 players ‘stay back if needed’ — These should be your smallest players and ones you don’t see as a threat in the air. Usually a defensive midfielder and both full backs suit this role.

Challenge Keeper — Your tallest and most capable player in the air should take up this role. I chose Crouch but the player needs to be tall and have a minimum rating of 16 for both heading and jumping.

Attack near post — I chose Walters (my poacher) for this duty. The player is used more for a flick on and therefore doesn’t need to be too tall.

Stand on far post — Your weaker centre back should be used for this role if you are aiming the cross to the six yard area, I used Shawcross. However, if you aim your crosses to the far post your best CB should be selected with minimum heading and jumping of 16.

Attack ball from deep — This role is assigned to someone who can power though the air and attack the ball. I chose Huth but you should use a player with minimum jumping and heading attributes of 16. Height is also a very big advantage alongside strength.

Lurk outside the area — On the off chance that a clearance lands outside the opposition area you want someone with real shooting ability waiting to fire a long range shot at goal. I chose Whelan but you want someone with a minimum of 14 for long range shots.

Go forward — Anyone else who is left should be selected for this, it doesn’t matter what ability they have as you’re trying to create power in numbers. You should have two players left for this duty bar your Keeper who needs to be on ‘default’.

FM 2012 set piece guide — How to score from free-kicks

Moving onto my free-kick routine and we’ll begin with who should be taking the set piece. It would be ideal to have a left footed player taking free-kicks from the right and a right footed player taking them from the left but the quality of delivery is far more important. To get this your free-kick takers must have a minimum free-kick attribute of 15 and would benefit from a long shots attribute of more than 14. Players with high crossing ability would also be a bonus. Now we’ll see how each player should be positioned alongside the delivery aim.

Cross aim — Best header

4 players ‘stay back if needed’ — You don’t want to get caught on the counter so four players are required to stay back and they should be your least effective in the air. Usually the two central midfielders and two full backs.

Mark keeper — Your tallest and most dangerous player is required for this role. A minimum of 16 for heading and jumping is required. I chose Crouch for this duty but a good Centre back could be as effective.

4 players ‘Go forward’ — You want your most dangerous players in the air for this role. You are looking for attributes like heading, jumping and strength but height is also a massive bonus. I send Huth, Shawcross, Walters and Pennant or Etherington depending in who is taking the set piece. Everyone should now have a role bar your Keeper who must remain ‘default’.

FM 2012 set piece guide — How to score from throw-ins

OK to score from a throw-in there is just one option for your aim and that is to go ‘long’. You must find a player with minimum long throw ability of 17 but the higher this is the more chance you have of getting the ball into the box. Now getting the ball into the box is just half the task, you must have the players well positioned to challenge for the ball as below.

Throw-in aim — Long

2 players ‘near post’ — One of these players needs to be capable in the air, I chose Crouch as you need an attribute of 16 or higher in heading and jumping. The other player needs to be technically capable and preferably taller than 5’10». His role is to pounce on any keeper or defensive errors and a striker works best. Walters isn’t my tallest player but he’s scored the most from throw-ins due to his poacher like instincts.

3 players ‘forward’ — These three must be your best in the air and height is very, very important. Alongside height you need good heading and jumping ability (at least 15.) Strength will also make a big difference. I chose my CB’s Shawcross and Huth alongside my only spare winger for this role.

Stay back — You should select two players for this role but one of them must be the throw-in taker. As always select your weakest player in the air. This may seem risky but I haven’t been successfully countered yet.

2 players ‘Come short’ — This role is not only to offer a short option (which shouldn’t be taken) but the selected players will help defensively. Select your full back and winger on the side the throw-in is been taken from. These players are usually your weakest in the air.

2 players ‘lurk outside area’ — You need two players waiting outside the area for any loose balls. You should choose players with reasonable shooting ability for this role, usually a central midfielder and full back. I chose Whelan for his long shot attribute.

Summary
  • Always have your biggest aerial threat marking the keeper during corners that are crossed to the 6 yard box. Basically, where ever the ball ends up is where you want this guy.
  • Your centre backs are usually prime candidates to be in the mix with set pieces. But always research your own team to make sure you’re not missing a giant or aerial pro that should be in the box.
  • Evaluate the importance of set pieces over actual play. If you are Stoke then the value of your set pieces is priceless due to the type of players you possess. Therefore, you should be playing Shotton or Delap who have long throw ability of 17 and 19 over the better players like Wilkinson (he’s better than Shotton) and Whelan (who’s better than Delap.) While you will miss the extra quality in normal play your set pieces will improve so much that its worth the sacrifice.
  • If you don’t have at least two players with heading and jumping attributes of 15 or above then don’t expect goals from set pieces. Equally if you don’t have players with decent corner taking and free-kick taking abilities then you should try looking for some. While throw-ins are rarely seen as important you’d be very surprised by the amount of goals that come from these.
  • All the attributes mentioned are for a top flight club, you should think appropriately for the league you’re in. So if I’ve said a minimum of 16 for heading then Championship players should be 14-15, while League One should be 13-14 and so on and so forth.
  • Set pieces have always been a big part of scoring, but it wasn’t until Stoke joined the Premier League that our eyes opened to what a great set piece can provide. I have spent a lot of time tinkering with my settings and it’s made an instrumental difference. Take the time to learn your team and what they could offer from these dead ball situations, it really is worth the time and effort.

I have also created an FM 2012 Stoke tactic which replicates Tony Pulis’ efforts from real life. This tactic contains the set pieces you see above and is available to download at the bottom of my FM 2012 Stoke tactic post.

OK Junior, hope it works though I can’t vouch for its effectiveness on FM11 due to testing in FM12 alone.

Darren, a top quality article. Set pieces are an often overlooked area, because people wanted to get on with the game, rather than spend the time and effort things. From past experience, the time spent setting all these things up is worth the time and effort.

Thanks Ziggy, I feel the same way and believe set pieces can be the difference…especially during a tight match where both teams are evenly matches. Nice to see you again btw, I’ll check your website out now.

I think almost any aim will work with the right players and role assignments. Its all about getting the best mix.

    Hi Darren
Great little guide which I’m printing off now to go into my FM 2012 binder when I get home.

Sounds good Dan, let me know how it goes. With Vukcevic taking corners and free-kicks alongside Samba’s hefty figure in the air you should be sorted.

They work a treat mate, plus Pedersen has long throws on 18 :) Played 3 pre-season games, scored 3 from corners and 1 from a throw in! Which I’ve never done before :)

Can they do it on a dry Sunday night at the Nou Camp though….?

More seriously, thanks for putting the effort in to have a look at this. My experience of FM11 was that corner to the far post worked incredibly well at times but in my later seasons it wasn’t so good. I don’t know whether this was because I went up to the Prem or there is an inbuilt evolution process in the other teams where they become more adpet at defending your commonly used tactics. My team went from scoring a ridiculous number of goals in the Championship, and a good number in the first Prem season to rarely scoring at the moment with no noticble difference in my target players.

Incidently I had a very small player working the «challenege the keeper» role, I discovered that a lot of the time he flicked off target headers, or ones that would be easily saved, into the goal so a player with good traditional finishing skills (which he had) may work there as well. I had crosses to the far post though so less likely a keeper would come to claim them so an imposing physical player wouldn’t make too much difference.

    • Darren Smith

      12 октября, 2011 at 21:18

I actually believe that as your team gains quality you rely less on set pieces. I think that your teams finish more of their chances meaning the goals come before the ball is deflected out of play…just a theory.

As for the far post thing I noticed that was the best option too, however if you have a giant like Crouch to mark the keeper your crosses are best placed to the 6 yard area as the keeper will struggle to get the ball with such a big frame in front of him. I also noticed the guy standing on the far post tends to move forward in case the man marking the keeper misses the ball.

      • onecapwonder

        13 октября, 2011 at 19:43

Thats a good point and probably the most likely explaination, though it would be cool if the other teams adapted to your set pieces if you don’t change them or don’t specifically train them.

One thing I have noticed is that my players seem to delay quite a lot when they have a crossing opportunity and often its blocked out for a corner which subsequently leads to nothing. Have you ever noticed this or found a way to avoid it, I find it rather annoying and I can’t see a way to stop them doing it.

        • Darren Smith

          13 октября, 2011 at 20:02

That is certainly a possibility, it would be very realistic for the opposition to learn your tactics and set piece routines over time. In real life a newly promoted teams advantage is the fact that no one has played them in the new division.

I haven’t really noticed such problems as players dwelling before a cross. I’d suggest asking your wingers to cross the ball from ‘deep’ as opposed to the byline, this way they won’t take as long but you will notice them crossing well before reaching the opponents box which may not work.

I’m sorry but since you «stopped» writing for the website you seem to be posting as/more frequently than before. With each post seemingly taking a large amount of testing it doesn’t really seem like you’ve taken a step away…

    • Darren Smith

      13 октября, 2011 at 06:55

I never said I was going to stop writing for the website. All I said is I won’t be around the forum much and won’t be doing my stories. In fact most of my replies to comments were that this will mean I can concentrate on doing these post more. It was more about having rid of the responsibility of writing twice a week every single week. Sometimes you’ll see a lot of me then I may not write for a while it depends on my mood and personal life.

      • Darren Smith

        13 октября, 2011 at 07:11

Now what really puzzles me is if this comment is made in a positive way or negative way? I’d suggest it’s actually slightly negative due to the fact that your name isn’t basss. Not sure why you’d give out a fake name and email adddress if this wasn’t intended in a negative way. Hmmm

        • Basss

          13 октября, 2011 at 09:43

It was intended as neither positive nor negative. I suppose the reason it may have seemed negative is due to the fact your stories will no longer be on this website. Of course it’s a positive that you do posts like this but I would prefer it if your time was spent writing stories as, after all, your posts are the only ones I read word for word, as oppose to skimming. In terms of using a fake name, I don’t really see why using a nickname is a problem as I only comment on average about once every few months, I prefer to just read.

Would it not have been possible to sustain a story by posting once a week/every other week?

          • Johnny Karp

            13 октября, 2011 at 10:15

The problem is that there have previously been other comments from the same IP but with a different name, a name that we all know. Commenting with different identities is not something that we like.

          • Darren Smith

            13 октября, 2011 at 12:08

I see mate, well I understand what you mean and how it seems like I haven’t really taken a step back. But what you need to realise is that while I wrote my stories I’d be three posts ahead of what was actually published in the site and always playing catch up…it got to the point where I couldn’t enjoy the game and felt like writing the stories made the game a chore as opposed to a hobby. Now I’m able to test what I want and then write posts when I find the time. From what you guys see it may seem like I haven’t changed bar leaving out the stories but in this past week alone I’ve had time to go running, watch movies with my wife and just relax. Before that time was none existent. I would never rule out my stories returning and I’ll be writing the odd article on what I’m upto in game but can’t keep up with two story posts a week as I play the game at too faster a pace and can’t keep up with the writing side. That address’ posting a story every week or every other week. I just wouldn’t enjoy the game if I played it so slowly and also can’t keep up with the writing at my usual pace. Believe me I’ve tried to find a happy medium.

As for the fake name thing it doesn’t bother me at all, but when someone comments and covers up their true identity it usually spells trouble…as in someone writing a bitchy or mean comment, however that isn’t the case here so its completely irrelevant now. We just like to know when we’re hearing from someone that we already know thats all.

    • Basss

      14 октября, 2011 at 14:21

I understand, your stories will be truly missed though, there’s a big void to fill. Obviously I wouldn’t want to cause trouble as I love the site so I will create an account in order for me to comment in future under a consistent name.

You put together some good routines here Darren, I usually tend to undervalue this area of the game (being a lazy manager…), but your tips are surely interesting.
I find useful to have men with good acceleration attacking the near (or the far post), this is an added bonus to beat their markers.

    • Darren Smith

      16 октября, 2011 at 10:12

Thanks Paine, I’m similar to yourself in terms of lazy management but over the last few weeks I’ve had time to try different things out. I’ll have to try using someone with acceleration attacking the near post. I didn’t think of it that way but they’d lose their marker a lot easier….Hernandez of Man Utd would be good for that role with his off the ball movement. :)

Hi m8, i tried to set this tactic up, but when I set-up the throw-in tactics I can only seem to have one lurk outside area, it tells me that i need to have to swap with the first one i set for this position, what did u do to make it work?

    • Darren Smith

      26 октября, 2011 at 18:35

Hey mate, I think that may have been a bug in the demo as I can no longer select two players to lurk outside the area. I’d suggest using your best shooting for that role and then putting the other player to stay back or come short.

    Hi Darren,
    very helpful, thanks.

Quick questions: Which graphics settings do you use to get the nice visualisation and «flow» of the game in your set piece video on youtube?

I have a pretty powerful computer, however, the players move somewhat jerky and do not move as realistic as the players do in your game.

    Many thanks, V

    • Darren Smith

      21 декабря, 2011 at 11:02

Thanks mate, as for the settings well I just have them on auto-select. My laptop is good but not amazing. In fact I recently bought a very high spec dell, but found the in game graphics similar to what you are describing and then the graphics card kept messing up so I returned it and went back to my trusty Acer. Not sure what the problem is but better systems seem to over complicate it. Maybe try a match with low graphic settings and see what happens then gradually build them up until the problem starts again then you know what the limit is?

      • VA

        21 декабря, 2011 at 11:06

Funny, because I am playing on a high spec Dell (recently acquired), an XPS15 with a Nvida 540m. And I also have got graphics error messages. Haven’t occured to often, but still.

Will try to fix it, thanks for the tips.

          21 декабря, 2011 at 11:18

I had the XPS 17 and GT 550M with 3GB. Do you have Dell technical support? If so I suggest getting in touch with them because I’ve heard many people having this issue and it can prevent some games from working when the laptops spec is fine. Apparently there is an issue with some NVidia graphics cards where the drivers can’t fully control the fan. I hated having to send something brand new back but thought…I didn’t buy an expensive laptop for gaming just for the games not to work. :( Gonna go for a HP with Radeon graphics when my credit finally comes through.

Seriously though mate, that is an error that could effect more demanding games so get in touch with Dell if you can.

Did some research in the last few of minutes, seems to cause an error with a couple of 3D games. Someone said that Nvidia will release a new driver in December. Though, as nothing has happened so far I will definitley get in tough with Dell.

            Thanks again!

P.S. If you do contact technical let me know what happens as I’d love to hear about it. I had two options. Try and solve the problem with technical and risk going over my 7 day return period or just return it to get a full credit. I decided it wasn’t worth the risk and thought that I shouldn’t be spending time fixing something that’s meant to be brand new. But this driver issue is apparently wide spread and some people have even downgraded their NVidia drivers to an earlier version that worked before but that still didn’t solve the problem. I think that because the fans aren’t been controlled properly things are over heating and the graphics card panics equalling it to stop responding.

Hi Darren, I downloaded the most recent beta-phase driver from the GeForce webpage, which fixed the issue (290.53 BETA: http://www.geforce.com/Drivers/Results/40617). The 3D games work well now, something, that increases the fun factor of the game drastically.

I also started the play Mafia II yesterday, which has pretty high requirements but works fine as well, so I consider the problems as generally fixed now.

Thanks for keeping me updated mate, glad you managed to get it sorted. I ended up getting a HP with Radeon graphics but prefer the style anyway so I’m happy too. :)

Thanks Darren, very helpful! — although I have noticed, along with others, that aiming towards the far post, with a tall player, works much better.

Yeah in general that is certainly the case and I have taken up that method with Malaga. However, for Stoke I found this set piece to work well due to their amazing height and strength.

    Hi,
I cant have two players lurking for corners. Once I try to set a second player FM asks to swap with another player. Any idea how to stop it swapping?

      2 января, 2012 at 09:23

I think it let me do that because I have one of the players set to take the set piece but generally you can’t have two players lurk outside the area. You should change that to either attack ball from deep or stay back if needed.

Great advice Darren, I will try this out especially since I have Zigic and Delap!

In a season, how many goals are you getting from set-pieces?

    • Darren Smith

      8 февраля, 2012 at 11:54

Thanks Craig, I only tested this on the demo, so didn’t finish the full season but seemed to create most of our chances with set pieces.

    Hi,

I have reverted back to the default. Really didn’t work for me. Drastically reduced my number of set piece goals. In fact Van Persie and Andre Santos were banging in Free kicks and Koscielny, Vermaelen and Mertesacker were scoring plenty from corners on default. Changed to these tactics, set attacking set piece training to high and didn’t score a set piece for about 7 games. The long throw ins were awful, always went straight to opposition and left me exposed at the back (but that’s probably because there aren’t any good throw in takers at Arsenal).
Went back to default and seem to be scoring the odd corner again.
    Not for me.

That is fair enough, to be honest using those players with these set pieces is like asking Stoke to play the way Arsenal do…it just won’t work. The default set pieces are good anyways and certainly more appropriate for your team. As for the throw-ins they will be utterly useless without someone with throw-in ability of 17 plus and the correct players in the box.

hey there first of, thanks for the great post, however my concern here is more with the game itself than the post… I just find it extremely annoying that you can’t get the hang of the game, speially with mid / low teams…. it’s incredible how the AI seems to cheat (even though i know people say it doesnt) but its incredible how i always lose every important game, even if its with a team that is at my level or even a tiny bit lower… I just don’t get this game anymore… And its sad because apart from losing all the time, i kinda like how it is but its no fun when you can barely win any games… and its totally odd, too. I don’t get it! Now i know many people like «a challenge» but to me its just frustrating

While I myself and many others don’t have that problem due to experience and knowing how to play I know a few people like yourself. But its time and patience required as well as the will to try new things out and experiment, that is the only way you’ll find the mixture to win.

Tried this with Juve before my hard drive burned out and Chiellini topped the assists charts with 22 assists. Now consider that my Juve team scored around 65-70 goals!

i’m still confuse…if 10 people set in their role (as seen on the picture) and goalie set as default..so who is the free kick or corner taker?

    sorry..i’m a newbie

    thx b4

    • Darren Smith

      20 марта, 2012 at 18:52

Because whichever player you assign to take the set pieces will abandon their assignment to take the kick so their won’t be that many.

Hi, ive tried your idea and I think it is a very good idea to create a realistic Stoke. But I have only scored one corner and no throw-ins in a whole season :( Any tips on how to reslove this?

    • Darren Smith

      2 апреля, 2012 at 19:13

I’d suggest you don’t have the right players ding the right things then. Just consider what each role needs and it should say above…then find players to suit that.

Thanks for the guide Darren! I often get corners/free kicks in my games so if i could score frequently on set-pieces that would be around 1-2 goals per game!

Just a question on free kicks: i’m using hulk as my free kick taker (free kick rating of 16 and long shots 18), but everytime he takes a free kick, it either goes into the wall (most of the time) or goes flying over the bar. If this was from long range then it wouldn’t be a problem (i think) since i’ll be using your tactic. From close range however, is another story. What should i do about this (make it so that i can score more on short-ranged free-kicks)? Should i use free kick takers that don’t have the «tries long range free kicks» and «hits free kicks with power» attributes?

      7 апреля, 2012 at 12:20

I’ll be honest I haven’t experimented with that so not sure what the answer is…you just need to experiment with the players but the closer you are to goal the more chance there is of the player taking a straight shot so good free-kick taking and long shot ability will be best.

Hey, I didnt have much success using these tactics as Arsenal. However I have noticed that I seem to do considerably better with ‘floating’ crosses than I did with ‘drilled’. (Although I think more go over the bar, my players seem to connect with more corners / free kicks) Has anyone experimented with that? Has anyone noticed any difference if you are set to ‘defensive’ than if you are set to ‘overload’ for instance? I wondered how much of an effect this would have with corners etc.
And has anyone noticed that RVP seems to smash every free-kick into the wall? Found Arteta to be way better. Mind you I found Chamakh to be more effective and consistent than RVP too in almost every respect! Goes to show FM still have work to do.

To be fair this set piece works best with teams like Stoke, you need to make set pieces based on your players.

Cheers for the great piece you’ve put up here.

The only question I have is whether my lowly Forest Green team should implement some of these tactics (like the long throw), if it lacks players with high enough skills in the required departments.

In short: if a team lacks a long throw-in specialist (i.e., no one on the team has a throw-in ability of 17), is it still worthwhile to implement the above-mentioned set piece tactics?

    Cheers,
    Fred

    • Darren Smith

      3 июня, 2012 at 13:22

I’d say that you shouldn’t implement these unless you have the players to pull em’ off. When it comes to long throws you need high ability from the throw taker or the ball won’t reach the area it needs to cause havoc.

This tactic is only suitable for the formation of 4-4-2.

    • Darren Smith

      8 июня, 2012 at 11:50

No the formation doesn’t dictate whether a set piece works, only the players do that…

Hey! That is a very good guide for set pieces, but maybe you would make a guide for defending set pieces. I would like some advices, because I have big problems with my teams in this area of playing.

    • Darren Smith

      1 августа, 2012 at 19:54

You don’t need to touch the defensive set piece, well I never have anyway so don’t really have anything to recommend…I’d suggest its a problem with your players maybe.

  46. lotanna

    7 августа, 2012 at 11:53

agree with Baluta there..i believe i have conjured the best tactic created…(i use wolverhampton by the way) i thwack the little teams, trump the mid table guys even challenge the big leagues clubs (beat man city4-1)my problem is SET PIECES….man utd beat me 5-2. two of which where unbelievable screamers which i cant elp but the rest where flickons and headers from corners… i have tried so many tweaks in defending setpieces so i humbly ask for guidance here……….there has to be a way round it

Set piece has ruined me …just lost league cup to spurs…was up 2-0 damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Darren Smith

      7 августа, 2012 at 18:30

I can’t write a guide when I don’t do anything other than the default…it has nothing to do with the defending set piece creator as if it did then I’d be having the same problem…it will be an issue with your players or complacency.
