Hey guys and welcome to my Football Manager 2012 Scarborough AFC season 1 report. My long journey to the Football league has begun, for those of you who missed the first post you can read all about Scarborough and my targets here. I start my journey in the Northern Counties East Football League Premier Division, a whopping 5 promotions away from League Two. We are predicted to finish top of the table and I want this season to be a battle cry that matches our slogan ‘no battle, no victory’. We’ll begin the post with transfers and the squads depth. By the way, that image above is not of me ;)
I obviously have no transfer budget and doubt we’ll be receiving one for the next four years at least, but I do have a massive £100 per week extra to play with in wages. I decided to get rid of the dead weight, but most weren’t been payed to play anyway.
I then went about strengthening my squad, we needed to completely reform this club. My image is to buy players that could hold their own in the division above, that way I don’t need to do another squad overhaul and I’m happy to say that we got some pretty talented players. (For this division anyway.) Two players from the list below are superstars even for the division above me, they are my striker Bridges and central midfielder Abalimba. My highest paid player is on something like £70 p/w but the majority of my squad are been paid £20-30 p/w.
One massive issue with semi-professional Football is that the facilities are awful and I am aloud one assistant manager, two scouts (which I can’t afford,) two coaches and one physio. That is the extent of my backroom staff and none of them are good enough to assign opposition instructions pre-match. Literally, a message pops up saying none of my staff have enough tactical knowledge lol :)
Anyway, I managed to build a very strong squad and yet the assistant seems to rate them fairly badly in the squad depth analysis. I don’t really listen to my assistant much as his abilities are simply awful. For instance, Toms my left winger is rated as two star, but he’s easily the best left winger in the division. Just another example of what I’m up against.
Results — first half of the season
Due to this been my first season I will just split the results into two sections and not include the goalscorers. That will change next season but for now results are what count. As for my tactic, well I decided to use a slightly modified version of my Arsenal tactic, but we will be playing fluid and attacking Football. As you can see Scarborough won 18 and drew just one of their opening 19 games in the league. We were eliminated early on in the FA Cup, but I was delighted by our domination in the league and this was my dream start.
Results — second half of the season
We continued the good form into the second half of the season winning a further 16 matches and drawing just three. We went the season unbeaten, but I had to arrange some Friendlies in between fixtures to keep the lads fit and also raise a little cash. I tried to find the highest profile clubs prepared to come to Scarborough. This kept the club afloat, so I wasn’t too bothered by the defeats.
Needless to say Scarborough finished top of the league and gained promotion, only the top team goes up and there are no play-offs (its brutal down in the dungeons of English football.) This league was a walk in the park and the Seadogs finished 33 points above their nearest competition. Next season will be interesting, but we have gained promotion to the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One North and I think we should look to challenge too.
Squad stats and finances
My players performed like heroes this season and if I could I’d mention every single one. Instead I’ll leave you to examine the stats and name my three favorite players.
Player of the season:
3rd — Ashley Hodgkinson (DC)
2nd — Fraser Toms (AML)
1st — Scott Bridges (ST)
Scott Bridges was definitely my best player this season, his attributes are one step ahead of any striker in this league and probably even the league above. I’d actually like to keep Bridges as my main front man for the next two to three seasons at least. In other news, two new records were set by my young guns. I trailed through the youth recruitment deciding who to offer a contract and who to send packing near the seasons end. This was done with around 8 games still remaining. Two of those youngsters impressed me so much I promoted them to the first team and look what happened.
Jim Bye can play on the right wing or upfront and featured a total of 8 times impressing with three goals. I’d like to try and offer this kid some football next season but that depends on his performances really. But it wasn’t just this 15 year old that made a difference. I also brought in another 15 year old called Patrick Walton who is our youngest ever goal scorer and managed to rack up 2 goals near the seasons end from central midfield. The most pleasing part of these two records is that both players were born in the same hospital as myself. :) (They were both born in Scarborough where there is just one hospital.)
As for our finances, well they look reasonable and considering the season started with £2K in the bank we made a nice profit increasing the balance to £18K which was helped no end by the money raised from Friendlies. In fact if it weren’t for me arranging to invite those high profile Scottish teams to play us then Scarborough would be in the red for sure.
OK, I think that about does it for now, I couldn’t have wished for a better season and to get my first promotion feels great. I hope you’re enjoying the ride and will join me next time as Scarborough are tested at the next level. Until then please feel free to ask any questions below and I look forward to reading your comments.
So that’s one down, leaving four more promotions to reach the Football league…

Wow this is really a Great Start Darren and the results look amazing as you won lot of games with 3 and 4 goals. Hope the same thing happens next year but i think it will be lot harder though.
Darren Smith
17 января, 2012 at 19:14
Thanks mate, it really was the perfect start. I have spent a lot of time researching the league above since writing this post and while the standard is higher (which you’d expect) I could see my team playing in almost any club within that league so that has to be a good sign. A few better players and we may be set for a good one.

Brilliant post Darren, i didn’t realise just what a tight budget you were working with. Brilliant progress in the league, and I wish you the best next season! Can i ask, what have your board set aside for playing staff wages’ this season?
Darren Smith
17 января, 2012 at 19:18
Yeah the budget is quite tight. Because I can only offer scouts £35-40 p/w no one will join…the rest like coaches are around £40 p/w maximum per person.

Incredible Darren! What a season mate, truly amazing :) By the looks of it, you could certainly challenge in the league above next season, maybe even win it, and that’s without additions. Good luck!
Darren Smith
17 января, 2012 at 19:36
Thanks mate, I must say I didn’t expect to build such a strong squad so quickly but we’ll see what happens next season as sometimes you don’t have as good a side as you think :)

Great performance I have had similar experience in the lower tiers of England. Three straight promotion however I did not reach the blue square. Then something fishy happened and I abandoned the save. However I was never that superior.
Not a great FA cup run but what kind of a team is Witton anyway.
Are there not any more cups in that update of yours or?
Darren Smith
17 января, 2012 at 19:46
Thanks mate, out of interest what ‘fishy’ happened in your save so I can look out for it. I also have the FA Trophy that was participated in but knocked out almost instantly so didn’t show the results…other than that this particular league doesn’t have any other trophies for clubs to play in.
Witton are in the league I have just been promoted too and look like they could make the top half.

Thanks for info. Well first of all I had loaded to many players to begin with so the game became slow but that was to be expected.
There were some issues in the fm2011 about promotion I ended up in the wrong league and there were some other issues about the local cups were I would keep entering them even though I had advanced to higher tiers and should not have been allowed to enter them
I also tried to only to do a save with the bottom tier left out. That meant that Man Utd entered a county cup.
Darren Smith
17 января, 2012 at 20:21
Ahh I see, well I haven’t seen any issues so far and hope that remains…would be a real shame to get so far and then stop half way through the story. Fingers crossed and thanks for the info.

Hi Darren
you’ve done awesome job in your first season…keep it up…I kind of know what you’re going through right now as I’ve decided to abandon premier league clubs and today I started new game with Macclesfield. It was pretty shocking in the beginning but I’m slowly getting used to no transfer and weak wage budget….good luck in your next season
Darren Smith
17 января, 2012 at 20:29
Thanks Mario and good luck with Macclesfield, I’m sure you’ll have fun.

17 января, 2012 at 20:19
Haha! Brilliant first season Darren, I remembered you had mentioned something about them a long time ago as the team that you support alongside the Toon.
Glad you made the Evo-Stik’s, at least now I know a bit about the standards you are facing, I’ll tell you what if you win the Premier League with Scarborough then I am going to launch a campaign for you to take the reigns from Capello! :D
Finally, nice regens, it seems that the lower leagues produce some pretty good players for their standards, like how I got Barry Ireland in my second season and now he is a starter in the SPL.
Darren Smith
17 января, 2012 at 20:33
Thanks Sibo, the league standard is low and quite shocking when I first started out. As for the regens I was pleasantly surprised…I guess the only issue is that these 15 year old may be irrelevant if promoted two or three years running…then again that is something that may not happen. :)

17 января, 2012 at 20:24
Great first season, over 100 points, wow :O Both those youngsters look like they could be playing for you for years, loads of potential! Good luck in the next season, I’m sure it will be back to back promotion!
Darren Smith
17 января, 2012 at 20:37
Thanks Callum, it was a dream first season and all looks good. I just need to strengthen for the next season and we could challenge for sure.

I knew your 1st season would be a succeful one and boy I was right. You’ve bought in players capable at this level and you’ve reserached well to find players, well done! You will sucseed in this mission, you will!
Darren Smith
17 января, 2012 at 20:40
Thanks John, I must admit a lot of time was spent gauging the standard of player required for this league and the ones above…I basically tried to sign players capable for a league above but still within my wage budget. Lets hope it pays off next season.

Hi Darren,im thinking of downloading the database and doing one of these. If you would could you answer these quetions 1. How much time do you often spend on pre season? 2. How did you go about finding the right player will to play in this league?

Hey Darren,
It’s been a while but this looks like a great story! I’ll be following from my mobile since we still have ‘issues’ with my internet at home (its because Sky is an evil company in case you were wondering).
Anyway I’ll follow as much as possible, great season there too. :)
Darren Smith

Thanks Dan, hoping for a good season next year too. Sorry to hear about your internet, that is annoying.

17 января, 2012 at 22:11
That’s a great first season there. To remain unbeaten shows just how much better than the other teams you were. You built a nice strong squad for this level, so it’ll be interesting to see what it’s like one step further up the ladder.
Nice use of friendlies as well, to earn some extra revenue. :)
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 12:25
Thanks mate, it did feel like a season of domination but I’m relieved to be honest as there’s nothing worse than rebuilding a squad to suit the next level up every season.

Great Season!
The league you are going into my local team got promoted from 2 seasons ago and the next season they got promoted again into the conference north…..Colwyn Bay!!
I think you can do the same and get back to back promotions!!
Good Luck!!
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 12:24
Lets hope I can achieve the same as your team then.

18 января, 2012 at 00:50
Good to hear that the club at least had some wage budget for you to use Darren, you’ve brought in some excellent signings and Toms despite being (misclassified?) as two stars turned out to be your 2nd best player
Congratulations on the promotion, and pushing through 2 young lads into the first team :D
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 12:23
Yeah I was relieved to see at least a little money. I couldn’t believe how badly my coahces rated Toms, but that is when your own scouting ability is needed and that is why I think going so low down can be tasking.

brilliant season as usual Darren, superb job! the next division will be more difficult i guess, but i’m prepared to bet that you’ll get promoted from that one too..this is one of the most interesting stories anyone’s ever written on this site and i look forward to reading the next post. want to know where this journey leads….best of luck for next season and keep up the good work :D
cheers!

18 января, 2012 at 08:01
Superb first season Darren! How you can manage to get this amount of success with pennies foams a budget is amazing. I’m useless at lower league management.
That tattoo doesn’t look too bad, but I wouldn’t have it on my head :)
Jimmy
18 января, 2012 at 08:03
That was meant to say pennies for a budget
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 12:19
I spend as much time in pre-season as I need…usually a minimum of 2 hours I’d say without matches included. That is when you set the foundations and if they are out of place at all the whole season can crumble or you have to spend a lot putting it right. As for finding the right players I do a filtered search for expired contracts in the position I want and with the attributes I am after.

Wow…your transition to the gloomy depths of football has been amasing…congratulations!
Was wondering if u would apply your stoke tactic…as a way of grinding out results but it wasnt needed…but then all your teams have played beautiful football…
I’d of had one look at the staff…budget….n player stats…cried and then booted up a game as barcelona lol…fair play taking on such a challenege…i still dont think i could do it but i’ll continue to read these stories in hope it inspires me to attempt something different!
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 12:16
Thanks mate, it is a little weird but because we got off to a flyer the whole adapting process was made easier.
Themightymcphed
18 января, 2012 at 10:44
Fanrastic start Darren. I would be very interested in learning how you modified your arsenal tactic to work for lower leagues. Any time I’ve done a crap league save (last was Albion Rovers) I’ve had to resort to basic old school punt and run football to get the results I wanted….perhaps didn’t have the players to play the way I wanted originally.
Congratulations again mate and if you could pass me some info about your tactical tweaks (and your thinking behind it), I’d be very grateful.
Have fun with your story!
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 12:13
Thanks mate, I hardly changed my Arsenal tactic. Basically the passing is short, closing down often and marking zonal, then the philosophy is fluid and strategy always set to attacking. I use the same roles as my Arsenal tactic bar a poacher upfront and the ball playing DC is changed to limited defender. Because I have superior players we should play like a superior side is how I think.
Themightymcphed
18 января, 2012 at 14:06
Thanks for the info Darren. I need to learn how to spot good players at that level, any time I’ve played the stats all look the same lol.
You’ve inspired me to start a lower league game, however I now have a pair of 2week olds eating into my FM time so it will be a long time before I can play a save with any commitment……FM2030 perhaps! ;-)
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 18:53
lol, you’ll get the hang of it eventually. Spotting the right player for your division is more on practice than anything else to be honest. Good luck with those little ones :)
Kevin
18 января, 2012 at 13:28
Hi Darren
Brilliant start to this Scarborough odyssey and I’m quite surprised by how well your team adapted to an EPL tactic. That has to be pleaseing for sure. Nice to see some «youngsters» entering the team, reminds me of my old club Bradford ( Bradford-on Avon) United. They maybe in your database too?
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 18:55
Thanks Kevin, one of the more pleasing aspects was the way my team adapted to such an attacking tactic and I’m sure I’ve seen Bradford-on-Avon somewhere, feels like every team in England no matter how amateur is in this database :)
Alex
18 января, 2012 at 15:17
A season of dominance so typical of your management, however this time out of you comfort zone. You were so superior I can see you bagging quite a few promotions in the near future. I don’t suppose there’s too much difference in quality between the leagues down there, is there? As for you saying «that image above is not of me», are we really supposed to believe that? You seem like just the type of guy who would wear a hoop earring in each ear and have a tattoo on your shaven head ;)
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 18:52
Thanks Alex, as for the quality in the leagues you are about right, the standard seems very similar to me. And yeah I would suit that earring and tattoo with a skin head ;)

18 января, 2012 at 15:28
Great season, you were far too amazing for the other teams. You should be able to dominate the next league as well, in my opinion. The invincibles in the league as well. The friendlies were a good idea, they give you lots of money.
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 18:50
Cheers mate, it was nice to go the season invincible.

hopefully next season will see promotion again but probarbly tighter than this season
anyway well done and good luck

Thanks Woody, I’d expect every season to get harder but do think we have a very strong team even for the league above so fingers crossed.

well done on winning the league…question how did u get to play in leagues that low….also would u be able to play in like the bedfordshire version of that level of football as i would like to do a game like this with the team i play for
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 18:50
Yeah you can do that league and all is explained in my previous post at the bottom https://www.footballmanagerstory.com/2012/01/scarborough-athletic-fc-a-true-seadogs-tale/

Fantastic Darren,
Congrats for the promo, even if expected from a manager like you, it’s always a great achievement! Let me tell you that I’m a Huge Fan of LLM, actually I have like 350 hours of FM12 and all my saves started in lower leagues, the present one is the first without them. I have hundred’s of questions, but I’ll stick with one important one! How do you chose your player’s, it’s hard to find the perfect one, and if no money, impossible. So, do you go for technical, mental or physical? Or a mixed off all, and only get 50% in the main attributes for that position. Coming back to your save, Fraser was amazing, I think that the combo of his Fitness and his Off the Ball make him much better than what it seem’s! Financial speaking, great job, please do one off those brilliants guide’s on how to get money in your club’s (myself, not even playing on CL can get positive cash flow). I’ll stop here… we still have 5 more leagues to go. (Sorry for the extension but sometimes I can’t control miself :) )
Darren Smith
18 января, 2012 at 19:51
Thanks David, I am usually more inclined to start further up the leagues as I like to manage teams I know well, but when thinking of Scarborough who I’ve followed all my life I couldn’t resist the challenge.
As for players, I go for a mixture of attributes. Usually pace and acceleration are a must have then it goes down to position. So CB’s need tackling, heading, marking, composure etc but determination can help a lot too. I basically look at the bets teams in the league above me and try to buy to that standard or better. I then look for lesser quality if need be. I’ll see with the finance guide, time is very limited lately but if some frees up I may try and piece something together.

Hi Darren
Been a very long time since I have posted anything on this website and I like the idea of this story very much but how are you able to get these leagues in your fm game.
Like i said before its been a long time since i have posted and since that look at whats happened to our beloved team. Flying in the league and just signed what looks to be another worldy in Cisse
Hope your keeping yourself well and i hope to talk to you soon

It has been a while, I hope you’re well. I am really enjoying the Scarborough save and glitch free so far too :) As for the Toon, I love it how Carroll left then we replace him with two players of a better quality for a third of his price combined…we wouldn’t even be interested in loaning that bag of crap now. ;)

Yer I’ve been good I’m at university at the moment so it has given me less time to play on FM and also go to NUFC matches this season and unfortunately had to give up on my season ticket :-( . It has been a real surprise at how high we are in the league but judging on some of the performances this season I think we definitely deserve to be there.
P.S How are you able to get the league that are so far below the blue square north/south league. Would be interested in starting a save with a team at a similar level.

Im doing a story like this but with croydon athletic link here —> https://footballmanagerstory.com/forum/index.php?topic=1194.0
Could you possibly give me some advice as im struggling to find any players at all for that league as I only have a wage budget of £240 :P
Darren Smith
20 января, 2012 at 12:00
The only tip I can offer is you’re aiming too high with your targets if that budget isn’t enough, it is a lousy budget for sure but you have no choice but to work with it. Some of my best players at the same level as you are on £30 p/w. You need to search for players under their position, expired contract and attributes. For instance if I’m looking for a winger I filter the attributes for pace, acceleration, dribbling and set them all to minimum of 10 or 11. From there I check the limited list to see what I think. Also try asking the board to up your wage budget, but they probably won’t.
Tom Miller
20 января, 2012 at 13:35
Thanks mate :)
I’ve tried that but all of the players want like £80 a week which I really can’t afford :(

nice one darren if you get into league 1 or summet would you might doing that malaga thing were we can download it and play on it because thats really good and if you do anymore could you do that cheers
Darren Smith
22 января, 2012 at 11:53
I will only offer a save for download once the story is complete…also I am reconsidering the whole game for download thing anyway as some people just download it and rather than play the game try to make accusations which are unfounded, the minority spoil it for the majority sometimes but I’ll see how I feel nearer the time.

What a brilliant start! It’s always great to see you making money when all seems lost. I’m sure the pretend board are amazed with you. Hopefully next season they’ll give you some more towards staffing the place out but i do see some more free signings coming and the two youth players you got are awesome for their age! well played!

Thanks mate, while I’m trying to build for the future every season, the truth is that its mainly youngsters that are interested in this level of football. The money is mainly with thanks to Friendlies which can bring morale down if results aren’t good but are a must at the moment.

I downloaded a database to provide the lower leagues which was from here http://fmadvanced.forumfree.it/?t=59060264 As for providing this save when I’m done I should be, but recently people have been downloading other saves just to try and make accusations despite there been no evidence of anything dodgy so I’m contemplating not offering my saves anymore, but we’ll see how I feel nearer the time.

Hi Darren,
Sorry for late comment, I will start reading your story and ask you some questions to learn to play like you:)
What do you did to know that your players were good enough even to the next division?
There are many images missing, it´s my PC or the dissapeared?
Cheers and congratulations for great first season

To know how the players are any good just look at their attributes and compare them with players on the division above, its that simple, alternatively rely on scout reports.
We recently lost a lot of images from our server so unfortunately they won’t show on some posts.

Hi Darren,
Just started to read through your stories now, finally got some free time on my hands to delve back into FM and starting my save being FC Halifax in the BSN. Your progress is amazing and I love your Malaga tactics that you showed us, however, I was wondering what tactics you used in the lower leagues with Scarborough. I want to play an attractive, passing game but know that most players in the lower leagues aren’t very good passers. Any advice?
Thanks,
Ryan.

I actually used a less creative version of my Arsenal tactic which can be downloaded here and was used every single season from bottom to top. http://www.mediafire.com/?pqu0aera2ipb9zi

That’s brilliant, thanks for your quick response and help on that, will definitely be using that for my FC Halifax team. One last question, I noticed your do searches for various attributes on the Player Search filters, am I right in saying you have the «Enable Attribute Masking» turned off for this?!

That is correct yes.

Thought I’d give it a go with Scarborough as well see if I could manage it, copied your squad for the first season and found some other players as well which really did wonders. Sadly for me Bridges had to major injuries still managed to rake up 34 goals though. Alternatively Smith really stepped up for me so I decided he had pace and thought I could use him as an IF when bridges came back from injury and they both worked wonder as did Toms. Starting my second season brought in 5/6 players so far and see how Smith copes in this league found an absolute beast of a keeper Loris Karius from Germany extremely surprised he signed for me.

Glad you’re giving it a go mate, certainly a great challenge…at some point you may feel like the quality of player you already have exceeds what is available in the market but that soon passes so don’t give in, its all about persistence with this one.

Hi Darren,
I was wondering if you could break down which attributes you search for when looking for players? I’ve been playing around with an FC Halifax save but my scouts haven’t come back to me with any decent AMR’s and MC who can play the Support role so gonna have to manually search for them as I don’t have any in these positions at the mo. Which exact attributes do you search for on the Player search screen for each position?
Also, do you select the MC’s by the favourable duty role? Most MC’s I’ve come across either are BWM’s or AP, not found many CM Support players!!
Thanks again,
Ryan.

Its not that simple, I do tonnes of different searches for different attributes. Your looking for a simple and easy answer where there isn’t one. You need to experiment and most importantly if you don’t already know what you are looking for in a player then these searches won’t work.
