FM 2014 Strikers roles and duties explained
Deep Lying Forward
- His main function is to link the attack to the midfield. He aims to drop deep into space and hold up the ball before playing linking passes to his teammates, moving the ball back to midfield, spreading it wide to the flanks or playing in a striker.
- With a support duty, the deep-lying forward will mainly aim to bring teammates into play before attacking the box from deep.
- With an attack duty, the deep-lying forward will try to create chances for himself in addition to playing others in.
Advanced Forward
- His main role is to lead the line and spearhead attacking moves. The main duty is to be the focal point of attacking moves and he is required to both score and create chances.
- As a secondary role the advanced forward has to chase down misplaced through balls or clearances from deep, win possession and provide passes or crosses to his teammates.
- Can only have attack duty.
Target Man
- He uses his physicality to disrupt the opposition’s defence and open space for the other striker or supporting midfielders. He uses mostly his strength and aerial prowess to bring teammates into play rather than relying on technical ability.
- With a support duty, the target man will try to win flick-ons and play simple possession passes to his teammates.
- With an attack duty, the target man will lead the line and open space for teammates to move into.
Poacher
- He sits on the shoulder of the last defender, looking to break the defensive line and run onto through balls from midfield. His main aim is to score goals but he will also run at his marker and cross the ball when required. He rarely offers much help in constructing moves, preferring to remain in a central position and sniff out chances in and around the box.
- Can only have attack duty.
Complete Forward
- He possesses all the technical attributes of a deep-lying forward, the goal scoring ability of then poacher and the strength of the target man. He can play in others, create chances for himself or finish up team moves. Such a player should transcend tactical instructions, should simply be allowed to do his own thing.
- With a support duty, the complete forward will try to drop into space, run at the defence, take long shots, drive to the flanks or play through balls for teammates.
- With an attack duty, the complete forward will lead the line, spearheading attacks and creating chances both for himself and the others.
Defensive Forward
- His main duty is to put pressure on the defensive line, chase down the man in possession or loose balls and generally stop the opposition defence. In attack he will keep things as simple as possible, bringing others into play rather than creating his own chances.
- With a support duty, the defensive forward will sit a little deeper and put pressure on the opposition’s defensive midfielders.
Trequartista
- Can operate in attacking midfield or centre forward positions.
- Aims to drop into the holes between the opposition’s defence and midfield, similar to the advanced playmaker, but the trequartista will do a lot less defensively as he will simply drift around looking for space when the team is not in possession.
- Can only have attack duty.
False Nine
- He is similar to a more advanced attacking midfielder or playmaker, an unconventional lone striker or centre-forward who drops deep into midfield. His movement will create a problem for opposing central defenders, who can either follow him and leave space behind them or leave him to have time and space to create dangerous moves.
- Can only have support duty.

johnny, i bet it took a lot of time to create this and well done, my friend! i think it should help a lot of people. brazil is 3 hours before london’s time so we’re still at work; can’t wait to get home and start playing!

My FM is downloading at the moment and I needed this to stop myself bouncing off the walls. Thanks for this guide must have been a long task and we’re all really grateful for this continued effort. Playing a tactic with no wingers makes that role of complete wing-back look really tempting…

Cheers for this mate, greta work on the site so far, well done. Do you know in the tactics where I can allocate my playmker, target man ect ect?
Johnny Karp

You can’t, those settings are gone. Basically if you set a striker to target man role, that’s your target man. Same goes for playmakers.

Probably means «cross to target man», if you have one :)

Brilliant Work Johnny as always. Unfortunately i will only get payed in the first of november so i can only get the game then ARGHHH. But i am pretty sure it will be worth the wait.
One thing i found strange when using strikers as Target Man is that in my games their Passing has actually made them better and the ones with better passing stats tend to be more productive. and it is the stat that increases the most. But that’s probably because of how i set up the team or maybe just coincidence.

Any additional good attributes along with they key ones can do nothing but good for a player and his team as well.

no creativity for regista role??
Johnny Karp
25 октября, 2013 at 18:20
Nope, I agree a regista should be creative but the game doesn’t deem that essential.

Could it be possible for you to make these as search filters for FM14, so user could just use player filters to find the player he/she is looking for?
I found one webpage where this is done for FM13. —> http://thefmformation.com/files/file/50-the-fmformations-player-search-filters/
Just to give you an example what i mean by making these as search filters. I downloaded it and i’m going to try it soon in my FM13 save.
And if this has been done by someone already for FM14 then give us a link to it so we can download it and start using them. It would help quite a lot when searching for specific player.
I know it’s going to take quite a lot of time and work to make them, but i’m sure lots of ppl would appreciate that someone has made these filters available.
Thanks in advance no matter you deciding to make them or not. :)

I could do that, actually I thought about doing something like this while I was writing this post but I wasn’t sure it would be very useful. And seeing that only 500 people downloaded the one you linked to from FM Formation does not ease my concerns, I wouldn’t want to spend loads of time doing something that only a few people would use. I’ll think about it and look for feedback from some other people as well.

Hi Johnny,
This is great work mate. I’ve put all the player types attributes in filters so guess who can find players very quickly now. Available if anyone wants them.
Thanks Johnny,

Hi, this is a impressive job. Congratulations.
Because this is a great this a great thread of FM 14, I’d like to know if you authorize a translation for my native language, the portuguese. I’m from a FM community very famous in Brazil and I believe our members would love read something like this. I’ll keep all the credits to this guide, you and the footballmanagerstory.com if you authorize.
Cheers
