FM 2014 Wingers roles and duties explained
Wide Midfielder
- Performs defensive and attacking duties on the flanks, supporting the forwards, midfielers and defenders as well when required. Lacking the pace and skills of a technical winger, the wide midfielder relies on teamwork and work rate to move into dangerous attacking positions without compromising his defensive responsibilities.
- With a defend duty, the wide midfielder will sit back and launch crosses from deep.
- With a support duty, the wide midfielder will stay deeper and play angled through balls into the box from out wide, even though he will still attempt crosses when he has the chance.
- With an attack duty, the wide midfielder looks to play quick crosses in from the final third.
- With an automatic duty, the wide midfielder will switch automatically between defend, support and attack duties according to your match strategy.
Winger
- Aims to beat his man on the outside and needs to be technically proficient and quick as well in order to do so. Hugs the touchline when the team is going forward, ready to surge into space and attack the byline.
- With a support duty, the winger will try to quickly get past his man and get in an early cross for the forwards.
- With an attack duty, the winger will try to run at the defence, aiming to cause panic before shooting or attempting to play either a through ball or a cross to a teammate.
Defensive Winger
- Aims to press the opposing full backs, win back the ball high up the pitch and either hold it up for the rest of the team, drive to the byline or get in a quick cross or through ball.
- With a support duty, the defensive winger will try to win the ball back, get past his man and try to get in early crosses for the forwards.
Advanced Playmaker
- Can operate in the central midfield, attacking midfield or wide forward positions. He aims to drop into the holes between the opposition’s midfield and defence, making himself available for passes and aiming to turn defence into attack in an instant.
- With a support duty, the advanced playmaker will stay in the hole and look to spray passes to support attacking teammates.
- With an attack duty, the advanced playmaker will try to run at the defensive line from deeper positions, aiming to create crossing or through ball opportunities in the final third.
Inside Forward
- Aims to cut inside from the flanks and run directly at the centre of the opposition’s defence; works best when the player’s strongest foot is opposite to the flank he is playing on. His movement can open space for overlapping full backs as well as overloading a retreating defender but it can also end up with the player running into cul-de-sacs.
- With a support duty, the inside forward will cut diagonally into the space behind the defence and play through balls or take long shots if the opportunity arises.
- With an attack duty, the inside forward will run directly at the defence with the options of shooting, passing or crossing.
Wing Target Man
- He is the main outlet for clearances and long balls from the back. Ideally positioned against a smaller and weaker full back, his job is to get the ball and keep it before recycling it to a teammate.
- With a support duty, the wide target man is best used for relocating a tall and powerful target man to bully a smaller and weaker full back, offering knock-downs and opportunities to onrushing central players.

My FM is downloading at the moment and I needed this to stop myself bouncing off the walls. Thanks for this guide must have been a long task and we’re all really grateful for this continued effort. Playing a tactic with no wingers makes that role of complete wing-back look really tempting…

Cheers for this mate, greta work on the site so far, well done. Do you know in the tactics where I can allocate my playmker, target man ect ect?

You can’t, those settings are gone. Basically if you set a striker to target man role, that’s your target man. Same goes for playmakers.

Probably means «cross to target man», if you have one :)

Brilliant Work Johnny as always. Unfortunately i will only get payed in the first of november so i can only get the game then ARGHHH. But i am pretty sure it will be worth the wait.
One thing i found strange when using strikers as Target Man is that in my games their Passing has actually made them better and the ones with better passing stats tend to be more productive. and it is the stat that increases the most. But that’s probably because of how i set up the team or maybe just coincidence.

Any additional good attributes along with they key ones can do nothing but good for a player and his team as well.

no creativity for regista role??
Johnny Karp
25 октября, 2013 at 18:20
Nope, I agree a regista should be creative but the game doesn’t deem that essential.

Could it be possible for you to make these as search filters for FM14, so user could just use player filters to find the player he/she is looking for?
I found one webpage where this is done for FM13. —> http://thefmformation.com/files/file/50-the-fmformations-player-search-filters/
Just to give you an example what i mean by making these as search filters. I downloaded it and i’m going to try it soon in my FM13 save.
And if this has been done by someone already for FM14 then give us a link to it so we can download it and start using them. It would help quite a lot when searching for specific player.
I know it’s going to take quite a lot of time and work to make them, but i’m sure lots of ppl would appreciate that someone has made these filters available.
Thanks in advance no matter you deciding to make them or not. :)

I could do that, actually I thought about doing something like this while I was writing this post but I wasn’t sure it would be very useful. And seeing that only 500 people downloaded the one you linked to from FM Formation does not ease my concerns, I wouldn’t want to spend loads of time doing something that only a few people would use. I’ll think about it and look for feedback from some other people as well.

Hi Johnny,
This is great work mate. I’ve put all the player types attributes in filters so guess who can find players very quickly now. Available if anyone wants them.
Thanks Johnny,

Hi, this is a impressive job. Congratulations.
Because this is a great this a great thread of FM 14, I’d like to know if you authorize a translation for my native language, the portuguese. I’m from a FM community very famous in Brazil and I believe our members would love read something like this. I’ll keep all the credits to this guide, you and the footballmanagerstory.com if you authorize.
Cheers
