FM 2014 Central Midfielders roles and duties explained
Central Midfielder
- Has the technical ability to play in attacking, support or defensive roles, but tends to lack the required qualities to do all of those simultaneously.
- With a defend duty, the central midfielder stays back in front of the defence and plays a simple supporting game for those teammates playing further up the pitch.
- With a support duty, the central midfielder looks to hold his position in the middle of the pitch and plays balls into players ahead of him.
- With an attack duty, the central midfielder looks to get into the box to support the forwards, drift wide to support the flanks in the final third and also play teammates in front of him.
- With an automatic duty, the central midfielder will switch automatically between defend, support and attack duties according to your match strategy.
Deep Lying Playmaker
- Operates in the space between the defence and the midfield and aims to initiate attacking moves through pinpoint passes to players positioned higher up the pitch. He is a creative player that also has to be competent in defence.
- With a defend duty, the deep-lying playmaker will fulfill extra defensive responsibilities by holding position in front of the defensive line, rarely looking to support attacks.
- With a support duty, the deep-lying playmaker will bring the ball out of defence and look for long shot opportunities as well as supplying through balls.
Box To Box Midfielder
- He contributes greatly to both defending and attacking. In attack, he pushes up to support the forwards, often going into the box to get on the end of crosses, as well as providing a threat from distance. In defence, he harries opposition attacking midfielders and helps protect the defensive line.
- Can only have support duty.
Advanced Playmaker
- Can operate in the central midfield, attacking midfield or wide forward positions. He aims to drop into the holes between the opposition’s midfield and defence, making himself available for passes and aiming to turn defence into attack in an instant.
- With a support duty, the advanced playmaker will stay in the hole and look to spray passes to support attacking teammates.
- With an attack duty, the advanced playmaker will try to run at the defensive line from deeper positions, aiming to create crossing or through ball opportunities in the final third.
Ball Winning Midfielder
- His main function is to close down the opposition and win the ball. He also needs the skills to help the team keep possession and create chances for players with attacking roles.
- With a defend duty, the ball-winning midfielder will look to win the ball in the middle of the pitch and quickly lay it off to a more creative player.
- With a support duty, the ball-winning midfielder will attempt to win the ball back high up the pitch and support resulting counter attack chances.

My FM is downloading at the moment and I needed this to stop myself bouncing off the walls. Thanks for this guide must have been a long task and we’re all really grateful for this continued effort. Playing a tactic with no wingers makes that role of complete wing-back look really tempting…

You can’t, those settings are gone. Basically if you set a striker to target man role, that’s your target man. Same goes for playmakers.

Brilliant Work Johnny as always. Unfortunately i will only get payed in the first of november so i can only get the game then ARGHHH. But i am pretty sure it will be worth the wait.
One thing i found strange when using strikers as Target Man is that in my games their Passing has actually made them better and the ones with better passing stats tend to be more productive. and it is the stat that increases the most. But that’s probably because of how i set up the team or maybe just coincidence.

Could it be possible for you to make these as search filters for FM14, so user could just use player filters to find the player he/she is looking for?

Just to give you an example what i mean by making these as search filters. I downloaded it and i’m going to try it soon in my FM13 save.
And if this has been done by someone already for FM14 then give us a link to it so we can download it and start using them. It would help quite a lot when searching for specific player.
I know it’s going to take quite a lot of time and work to make them, but i’m sure lots of ppl would appreciate that someone has made these filters available.

I could do that, actually I thought about doing something like this while I was writing this post but I wasn’t sure it would be very useful. And seeing that only 500 people downloaded the one you linked to from FM Formation does not ease my concerns, I wouldn’t want to spend loads of time doing something that only a few people would use. I’ll think about it and look for feedback from some other people as well.
