FM 2014 Central Defenders roles and duties explained

Sweeper

  • Drops behind the defensive line, aiming to sweep up through balls, pick up extra attackers and make goal-saving tackles, blocks and interceptions. Must have exceptional athleticism and reading of the game which enable him to cover for defensive errors, take possession of loose balls from a deep position and secure possession. Rarely, if ever, ventures forward.
  • Can only have defend duty.

Libero

  • Drops behind the defensive line, having the same duties as the sweeper. He will also roam forward in support of the midfield when the team has possession.
  • With a support duty the libero will step into midfield when possession is secured and look to play balls through to attacking teammates.
  • With an attack duty the libero ventures much higher up the pitch to provide a goal scoring threat from distance while also looking to play in teammates.

Central Defender

  • His main job is to stop the opposing attackers from playing and to clear the ball from danger when needed. However, especially for more aggressive tactics, he must also have the technique and composure to be able to help the team maintain possession and lay off simple passes to the more creative players.
  • With a defend duty, the central defender will stay in line with his defensive partners and look to break up attacks, mark opposing forwards and prevent the ball from getting into the box.
  • With a stopper duty, the central defender will push ahead of the defensive line and close down players before they get to the penalty area.
  • With a cover duty, the central defender will drop a little deeper and sweep up through balls behind the defensive line.

Ball Playing Defender

  • His main job is the same as the central defenders, stop the opposing attackers and clear the ball from danger. The main difference is that the ball playing defender is encouraged to launch defence-splitting through balls from deep to generate counter-attacking opportunities.
  • Can have the same defend/stopper/cover duties, with the exact same job description as the central defender.

Limited Defender

  • His main job is the same as the other central defender roles but the limited defender will clear the ball safely up field in a no-nonsense manner.
  • Can have the same defend/stopper/cover duties, with the exact same job description as the central defenders / ball playing defenders.

johnny, i bet it took a lot of time to create this and well done, my friend! i think it should help a lot of people. brazil is 3 hours before london’s time so we’re still at work; can’t wait to get home and start playing!

Yes, it did take a bit of time but I’m very happy that you find it useful. I hope it will help a lot of people indeed.

My FM is downloading at the moment and I needed this to stop myself bouncing off the walls. Thanks for this guide must have been a long task and we’re all really grateful for this continued effort. Playing a tactic with no wingers makes that role of complete wing-back look really tempting…

Cheers for this mate, greta work on the site so far, well done. Do you know in the tactics where I can allocate my playmker, target man ect ect?

      17 октября, 2013 at 08:32

You can’t, those settings are gone. Basically if you set a striker to target man role, that’s your target man. Same goes for playmakers.

Brilliant Work Johnny as always. Unfortunately i will only get payed in the first of november so i can only get the game then ARGHHH. But i am pretty sure it will be worth the wait.

One thing i found strange when using strikers as Target Man is that in my games their Passing has actually made them better and the ones with better passing stats tend to be more productive. and it is the stat that increases the most. But that’s probably because of how i set up the team or maybe just coincidence.

Any additional good attributes along with they key ones can do nothing but good for a player and his team as well.

    • Johnny Karp

      25 октября, 2013 at 18:20

Nope, I agree a regista should be creative but the game doesn’t deem that essential.

Could it be possible for you to make these as search filters for FM14, so user could just use player filters to find the player he/she is looking for?

I found one webpage where this is done for FM13. —> http://thefmformation.com/files/file/50-the-fmformations-player-search-filters/
Just to give you an example what i mean by making these as search filters. I downloaded it and i’m going to try it soon in my FM13 save.

And if this has been done by someone already for FM14 then give us a link to it so we can download it and start using them. It would help quite a lot when searching for specific player.

I know it’s going to take quite a lot of time and work to make them, but i’m sure lots of ppl would appreciate that someone has made these filters available.

Thanks in advance no matter you deciding to make them or not. :)

I could do that, actually I thought about doing something like this while I was writing this post but I wasn’t sure it would be very useful. And seeing that only 500 people downloaded the one you linked to from FM Formation does not ease my concerns, I wouldn’t want to spend loads of time doing something that only a few people would use. I’ll think about it and look for feedback from some other people as well.

        Hi Johnny,

This is great work mate. I’ve put all the player types attributes in filters so guess who can find players very quickly now. Available if anyone wants them.

        Thanks Johnny,
