Darren: Who should I manage in FM 2012, European round!!

Hey guys, five days ago I opened up the voting for who I’ll manage in Football Manager 2012. At this time I explained my reasoning for offering just English clubs in the voting, well I have changed my mind. I think it’s time for a change and I should at least offer you, the readers a chance to choose from different cultures. Therefore I have closed the voting on the English part of this poll and have just opened up the voting for the European teams. Below is the end result of the English poll, as you can see Norwich and QPR were the clear favourites!!

Darren Smith: "Which team should I be managing in FM 2012?"

  • Norwich (EPL) (27%, 80 Votes)
  • QPR (EPL) (23%, 68 Votes)
  • Leicester (CH) (16%, 46 Votes)
  • Stoke (EPL) (15%, 44 Votes)
  • Derby (CH) (14%, 42 Votes)
  • Bolton (EPL) (5%, 15 Votes)

Total Voters: 295

OK, so you may be wondering how this voting is going to work with two polls in place…well the top two teams from the English poll will be placed in a final poll with the top two teams from the European poll. This will be decided in 5 days time and that final poll will remain until FM 2012’s release. Below are the teams I have selected for the ‘European poll’ and why.

AS Roma: I have one simple reason for wanting to manage Roma, my wife supports them :) I am also heavily invested in the Italian outfit and would love to guide them to glory on FM 2012. I’d describe Roma as an Italian giant of old that has struggled in the modern day game, or at least since Capello’s departure many years ago. The fans feel like their club should be challenging but what we see on the pitch suggests a far grimmer conclusion. A lack of funds will be on offer and I want to put this great club back where is belongs and even cement Roma as the Worlds greatest.

Malaga: I love watching the Spanish game, but feel the last 3-4 seasons have become very much the same…with Real Madrid and Barcelona dominating as well as playing the best football. However, Malaga have recently come into some money and look dead set on challenging for the top four. I’d love nothing more than to turn this club into Spain’s dominant force, one that the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid fear. My goal would start with Spain, then Europe and at the same time I’d look to emulate Barcelona’s passing game.

PSG: The French league seems to have experienced a boost within the last 2-3 years. With sides like Lyon and Marseille putting their stamp on the Champions League, Europe no longer sees the French as easy opposition. However, one club that hasn’t featured in this revolution is Paris Saint Germain. The once great club have slipped back a little despite possessing a reasonable squad. I want to take France to the next level and instate PSG as Europe’s dominant force, but we’ll have to dominant France first.

Napoli: Probably the easiest club to manage from all the above options. I chose Napoli because they have a good squad, decent finances and still seem to lack that something extra for the Serie A title.I admire Napoli’s players and my main reason for wanting to manage them is Cavani, Hamsik and Lavezzi…I’d love to hold these guys in my team.

That is it, you have now seen all the options available. Norwich and QPR have already booked their place in the final poll thanks to your votes. Now you can vote for the two foreign clubs to follow them into the final poll. Please vote below and remember you may vote for two separate teams. This poll will end on the 23/09/11 and the final poll including Norwich, QPR and the two winning teams from European poll will start shortly after.

Darren Smith: "Which team should I be managing in FM 2012?" European poll

  • Malaga (Spain) (48%, 130 Votes)
  • PSG (France) (21%, 57 Votes)
  • Roma (Italy) (19%, 51 Votes)
  • Napoli (Italy) (13%, 36 Votes)

Total Voters: 270

A tough decision, but in the end I voted for PSG. I like all 4 choices, all clubs have cash and a good foundation for you to build on.

Thanks for voting mate, I too like all four clubs and they all have a nice foundation.

If you end up managing Roma, then you have a good excuse for playing FM when she asks! I voted for Malaga.

Out of the 4, I don’t know… PSG will be pretty easy because the French League isn’t the hardest, they have plenty of cash ($50 mill on Pastore…) and you’ll be able to buy the best wonderkids from the start.

Malaga will be interesting, I’m a fan of the Spanish league so out of these 4 it’s what I’ll vote.

My choice would be Borussia Dortmund, they’d probably be the most interesting team in Europe to manage — young squad with a few wonderkids but need a good manager to fulfil their potential. Pity you didn’t include them. In real life they also have limited funds, don’t know what the game will give you. Oh yeah, they also have a top class stadium :)

Thanks for voting Nathan….however I do disagree about PSG. Lyon and Marseille are incredible and due to the other clubs been further behind that league would require high point tallies to win. As for Dortmund, well I like the club but just don’t like the league unfortunately, that’s why I decided against offering any Bundesliga teams.

    Hi Darren,

Malaga. History need to be made and dominance need to be broken. Another reason, La Liga is my second favorite league behind EPL.

Thanks for voting Lye. I agree that Malaga would make the most historic story… dismantling Real and Barcelona would be no small feat.

I voted for Napoli because I support them, quite happy to see them beat A.C. Milan 3-1 yesterday :)

Napoli are a great team to watch Johnny, I loved their display in the CL against Man City.

PSG got my vote now, I tried choosing the hardest team to manage (in my opinion).

Thanks Calin, Malaga will walk first but we’ll see who qualifies for the final round in second.

I chose Malaga. Malaga is a good team but is most probably the weakest team amongst the 4. I would love to see you take a mediocre side to win just like Newcastle instead of top teams like Napoli, Roma and PSG.

Another downside is the reduced chances of getting quality youths. I would say the established clubs, Roma and Napoli, are getting good youths while you have all the French youth in France in PSG. Looks like Malaga is the best challenge so far.

Looks like Malaga is the choice for most anyway and I think it’s time Spain got a third power!

Thanks for voting mate, it would be interesting to add a third wheel and make the La Liga title race a pyramid.

Napoli for me. Hamsik is my country mate and has a lot of potential so I wanna se how you manage him.

I voted for Roma since I feel like its the biggest challenge, PSG are loaded and so are Malaga while a lot of people choose to be Napoli. Looks like Malaga is the peoples favourite though…

    • Darren Smith

      19 сентября, 2011 at 19:03

I agree Dan, while Malaga may seem like more of a challenge to some…I believe Roma have the least amount of funds and play in the toughest league for my style of management. Malaga may be walking to first but its the top two that count.

Nice idea Darren, I have voted For PSG. In the hope you can bring them back to the days when they had Anelka, Jay-Jay Okocha and Ronaldinho.

I like the European Choices…all teams have amazing squads from this recent transfer window…and all of which have got new owners who invest heavily…they are all ‘sleeping giants’ in my view….and it will be interesting to see how they progress in FM12…

    • Darren Smith

      20 сентября, 2011 at 11:52

Glad to hear it Tom, I like the options and selected them because of their promise. Three of the teams should be wealthy but Roma will be the only club to struggle a little.

I thought Roma got taken over aswell? Maybe i’m mistaken…they will have an amasing squad due to this transfer window with the likes of Bojan…Osvaldo…Lamela…Kjaer…Stekelenburg…Borini…Gago…Pjanic all being brought in…

Juventus would also be an interesting challenge…they have spent well this year…and the squad is looking alot more balanced…Vidal and Elia are proven quality…

I look forward to your FM12 stories…always an insightful read….

Hmm, missed the vote, although it seems Malaga were overwhelmingly popular, I would have gone for Roma especially given how their start to the 11/12 season as «BarcaRoma» is going and if its possible to try the style but win on FM. Would also be interesting to see how FM responds to Inter’s formation under Gasperini.

The other 3 seem a bit «easy» Napoli are a really great side at the moment and FM seems to amplify this, and the others have tonnes of money. Assuming you have plenty of cash at Malaga, with Toulalan and Cazorla already bought, I imagine a title challenge in the first season would be possible. PSG probably the same.

    • Darren Smith

      23 сентября, 2011 at 18:57

They certainly were mate, while its easy to think Malaga would be breeze due to finances I can’t help but think of the players available for Barca and Real. They will be hard to knock down over the next 5 years or so.
