Chester Season 2010-2011 The Conclusion

After the first half of the Coca-Cola Championship season my Chester team was clear of the relegation places, we were lying in 16th place. The bad thing was that we were almost 1.5 million euro in debt. There was some hope of earning some cash in the FA Cup, our first game was in 3rd round at home against Nottingham Forest. We managed to beat them and to get around 150 K from ticket sales and TV rights. The next round was an impossible encounter against Blackburn. We only lost 1-0, but we got some cash in again.

As for the League form… we began with a disastrous 4 games lost in a row, but towards the end on the season the team began to perform better. We notched up 8 wins, 3 draws and 7 losses until the end of April, so with 4 games to go we were officially saved from relegation.

We managed to get a very good 8 games without defeat streak, with 6 wins and only 2 draws. The good run was ended by Wolverhampton Wanderers after a spectacular game.

Richer clubs were continuing to offer me better jobs elsewhere, but I wanted to stay with Chester, I won’t leave the club until I’ll take it to the Premiership!

At the end of the season we were 11th in Coca-Cola Championship, way better than the media prediction that saw us 24th.

I think that if we would have been better defensively we could have battled for a playoff spot. We scored a very good amount of goals, 82, but we conceded way too many, 68. Our young regen Lithuanian goalkeeper wasn’t as reliable as I would have wanted him to be.

Overall the good thing was that we avoided relegation, but things were not looking up financially. We still were around 1 million euro in debt, and we had a lot of players that were reaching the end of their contracts in 2012. There will be quite an interesting pre-season, I’m sure about that…
