After fairly disastrous campaigns in the UEFA European Championship in 2004 and the FIFA World Cup in 2006, England are seeking to win their first major trophy since the 1966 triumph, when they arrive in South Africa this summer.
Many experts believe that the current England team are easily capable of winning the competition, and fans are certain that if England are going to be successful in the next ten or twenty years, then this squad will be group of players that tastes such success. At Partybets.com are you able to check out all the latest odds for online betting on the World Cup. Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Rio Ferdinand are now reaching the age of thirty, and this FIFA World Cup in South Africa may well be their last, therefore they’ll be hungry to prove that England are anything but pushovers. One thing is for certain, the team’s performances under Fabio Capello have greatly eclipsed those under Steve McLaren and Sven Goran Eriksson, and some much needed dynamism has clearly been injected into the dressing room.
The road to South Africa was relatively smooth for England, and they won Group 6 easily, scoring a European high number of goals, 34. Their only defeat came away in Ukraine, however, the team had already qualified for South Africa, and Capello was keen to experiment with tactics, and give a chance to the fringe players. Many fans are pinning their hopes on Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney this year, and rightly so. The dominant front man has scored over thirty goals for his club already this season, and continues to terrorise defences in the latter stages of the league and cup competitions. His blistering pace and bullish mentality should make opposition teams at the World Cup extremely uncomfortable, and Fabio Capello, and the country’s supporters, will be praying he stays fit for England’s opening group stage encounter with the USA.

Hi Johnny, I don’t think England can win the world cup, but that’s probably because I’m an England fan. Unfortunately there are too many problems surrounding the team, particularly the defence and goalkeeper. I will still hope though, maybe we can bring the trophy home!

I’m not an England fan but I agree, I don’t think they can win it.

I’m from Scotland and although I love watching England play some great football, I just don’t think they have the edge over other teams.

Unlike you guys I think England can win it! They will need luck of course but with a quality manager and some quality players (like Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney and Ashley Cole), i dont see why they can’t?

Joseph, I like your optimisim, but unfortunately I don’t share it. We can still hope though!

I Think If Ther Wasn’t All The Ashley Cole And John Terry Things Going On, Then England Would Be A More Together Kind Of Side.
Also, A Lot Of Hopes And Expextations Are Placed On Wayne Rooney, So If He Can’t Play Then They’re Missing A Key Part Of The Team.
And The Keeper Problem Is An Issue Also, But Its Not Too Bad.
I Think That England Have A Chance Of Winning It, But They’re Not The Strongest Force In The Competition.
Btw, Their Win Was In 1966 Not 96:P

Hi All
I think this is England’s best chance of winning since Italia’90 as long as we don’t have to go to penalty kicks along the way. With everyone at 100% fitness England do have a world class team, they just have to believe it themselves!
With this summers tournament actually being played in a winter climate the weather conditions will suit England and they will not have to worry about heat exhaustion. The only concern is playing at altitude but I consider that an even playing field against other teams.
Having said all that you need a little luck too and so far in qualifying and in the final draw itself England have had that in terms of opposition and I hope that continues on. This will be my 11th World Cup Finals and with the exception of 1970 the winning team has had some luck along the way.
COME ON ENGLAND!!!

I doubt englands chances at the world cup…they will probably make it to the semi-finals but no further…
I think SPAIN will win it…

I think England is definitely among the favourites. This time English team has truly great manager Capello, and it’s a great advantage over Brazil, Argentina, France. Only Spain can boast with such kind of smart manager.

i cant see them winning it with Ferdinand and Terry having inconsistent form. Gerrard not at his best and capello pickin the likes Of Rob Green Heskey and Walcott in his side ahead Of Joe Hart, Scott Parker and Bobby Zamora who are by far in the better form.

Just saw this! :)
Being part Spanish I really hope Spain win it. But England I think will do well.
But I dont feel they have the strength in depth that Spain have, I mean when a goalkeeper of Reina’s quality isnt even close to be number one you know things must be good!
Casillas
Ramos Puyol Pique Capdevilla
Senna
Xavi Iniesta
Silva Torres Villa
Has everything really in both attack and defence and will be a hard team to beat, but we dont usually do too well at the big competitions. Remember we were like England who on paper had a great team that could win the tournament, but we were always let down every time!
The Euro win will defiantly help Spain but just remember England fans its how you play on the field, and your team is good enough to beat anyone!!
P.S — We should get a forum! :D

I’m npt really that impressed with spains defensive qualities. Capdevila isn’t really good enough, Puyol isn’t a very good defender, Sure he does some show-stopping stuff but it is only because he puts himself in difficult positions. Pique is good however. Ramos aswell (And I know some of you may think otherwise because he’s such a big icon in Barca, but lets face it. Barcelona hasn’t had a solid defender in the last decade or two. But they’ve never needed one.)
But Spain functions a lot like Barcelona. Tons of possession and hopefully they don’t face teams that play really good destructive football. Thanks to Capello England might have that dimension Mourinho brought to Inter for example.
The other big nations Argentina and Brazil will stryggle against their own ambitions and mysterious selection of players.
It really feels like this World cup is missing something in quality.

I am an Argentinian fan, and the two teams i fear are Brazil and England, even if England played awafully in the first round i´m sure that they have good players and Fabio is an amazing «result driven » coach.I was so disspointed with Donovan´s goal which pu England in 2nd place in his group, now if Argentina defeats Mexico, will have to play against the winner of Germany and England, i really hope Germany wins and of course that the game lasts 120 minutes with lost of yellow and red cards:)
The only thing it gives me some tranquility about England is that strangely is a nation whinch invented football, has amazing players but NO COACHES AND NO GOALCKEEPERS:)
If England would have the swiss goalkeer they will be the team to defeat.
Spain is too much candidate to win the cup, though they have the best players, and Argentina is not as good as it looks, when they play against a team with attackers who shoot on goal it will be a very different story for as……..
My candidates are:
1.England
2.Brazil
3.Spain or Argentina
This i said it before the world cup.
