Cambridge United: Ripped Apart…. (Oct — Nov 2014)

Hello Friends and welcome back to the latest report from my Cambridge United story. As the title easily suggests things have not been going well at all so the style of this report is somewhat different than my usual offering.

Premier League

As you can see our form has been nothing short of atrocious with only one win over the last nine games and that coming from a late penalty kick at home to Middlesboro’. Our defence is indeed no match for EPL strikers with the two central defenders being pulled out of position time and time again leaving massive holes for through balls and easy shots for opposition front men. As for our attack well it’s nowhere to be seen as the screen shot so harshly reveals.

EPL Table

No surprise then to see that we are bottom and well on our well to setting a record of the most goals conceded in a Premier League season which apparently is 100 set by Swindon Town.

League Cup

Having beaten Birmingham in the previous round 5-0 hopes were high at producing another upset at home to Spurs in the 4th Round. The Londoners were three before the half time whistle and although we were competitive it was the back four who sadly let us down again in this 4-0 defeat.

Euro Cup

Ironically in this competition we are doing remarkably well. After an expected defeat against Inter Milan, Polonia Warsa were no match for us as we scored 10 goals in back to back games with the home fans being treated to a 7-0 thrashing of the Polish side at The Abbey Stadium.

So we actually top the group with just two games remaining and could actually go through to the next round!

Other News:

Our stadium expansion has been completed and so we can now hold over 12,000 fans;  hopefully they will start showing up as we are propping up the Premier League attendance table as well.

Fixtures

Our Euro Cup destiny will be decided in very short order whilst in the EPL it’s very difficult to see any change in our form as we are just totally outclassed by everyone we have faced.

So that’s it. Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!!

Hang in there Kevin, it’s not easy to turn things around at this point but it’s not impossible! The Europa League run is remarkable though. I won’t give you any advice because you know your team way better than I could but you should keep the faith and try to lift the players’ morale somehow.

Take the positives Kevin, your side are doing fantastically well in the Europa League, and hopefully you can turn around your league form, the January window will be crucial to bring in quality players that can make a difference. Good luck!

      Hi Laxeyman
The Euro Cup perfromances really were surprising to say the least. I had a hard time in the summer window bringing in players I wanted I hope January is better!

Ouch, the EPL has really treated you badly mate and getting past the first year is always tough. Hang in there though as your players may start picking up form and maybe a few points but even if you get relegated I’d expect a spring board back up.

Sorry to see your having such a tough time in the Premier League but your doing great in the Europa League. West Brom were in your situation once and survived plus you’ve got mid season fixture congestion which may affect some of the teams around you and help you grab some points. Even if you do get relegated (which I hope you don’t) I can’t see any other outcome than you bouncing straight back into the top flight.

    Hi Kevin,

Well things do not look that optimistic but the fact that you are doing so well in Europe, this is an evidence that your team is not that weak. Have you ever thought to sacrifice your participation in Europe so that your players remain totally focused on the league? Just a thought…

I hope that your team will bounce back and remain in the league. Good Luck!

    Hey Kevin,

Your side is enduring a torrid time in the EPl, but I’m hoping you can work your magic and turn things around. Good luck!

      Hey Sears

Great to hear from you. I need some of that Irish luck as well as a bit of magic I think :)

    Hi kevin
I’ve had similar experiences with Plymouth argyle and 2 odd but good tactics that saved us was a 2-3-2-3 and a 4-6-0, just throwing that idea out there, also morale will be vital :)

Ps congrats on europa league :D

Firstly, well done on the Europa League progress…it’s nice to see you doing well there! :D

It’s a shame to see the BPL treating you badly though, my only tips for a bad run of form is to make your tactic more defensive and try to get «smash and grab wins»… taking a 1 or 2 goal lead and shutting up shop. Also, maybe you could look to some loan signings in January to help out?

Good luck, and I hope you turn it around! :D

    Hi Kevin,

Big contrast of results between Europe and the league. There are 25 games to go so plenty of time to make it right. The players confidence may suffer a dent, you just have to pick things up. I hope you don’t lose your fighting spirit as your team need all the encouragement from you. Best of luck.
