Malmö FF – The future is looking blue!

Published on

Hey everyone!

Welcome back to the south of Sweden where it was make or break time for the Malmö lot. Last episode was a bit of a dire one in all fairness and honestly I was hoping for more. There was a little hope though after a frankly disastrous start where we couldn’t find a win in 7 games, but with a good bulk of new signings and a shed load of determination, I was desperate to see us move up the table in the closing games of the month so let’s see how the blues faired..

Premier League

First game of the month was against Västerås, a team that were sitting in and around mid table. Could we kick off with a win?

Ohh yes we could! Magic. We tore the opposition apart and I was so relived as we grabbed all three points. There was a slight disaster though.. OK, a pretty big disaster as the three points came at a huge cost to our squad:

Oh snap! Both of my star players out for the best part of 3 months. Viktor Eriksson, my starlet of the academy came off with only 8 minutes on the clock while the goalkeeper Gonzalez ruptured his achilles the day after the game in training. I’m having next to no luck at the moment which is a pain in the arse! I have backups (..well you saw the substitute goalkeeper who is more than a little questionable) which will serve the squad well over the coming games and I only hope this doesn’t set us back too much. Let’s see how we faired over the rest of the season:

I’m glad to say that it didn’t hold us back as veteran and summer signing Fredrik Andersson was banging them in at one end, scoring 7 goals in his 14 games for the club as his form kept out my wonderkid Viktor Ericksson from re-entering the frame, and stand-in goalkeeper Mikael Carlsson made sure that the opposition weren’t at the other.

Overall it turned out to be a half decent season for us, in which we really only suffered one heavy defeat..

..And one personal defeat at the hands of the ever defiant Varbergs BOIS!

I’d have loved to say that this game was close, but the scoreline really flattered us. One shot, one goal.. Looks like we need a bit more of an improvement before we face my old club again.

Where did all this leave us though?

I’ll tell you where.. Ohhh so close to a European spot! I never would have believed it if you would have said it 15 games ago but we actually did really really well in the closing half getting some brilliant results, especially against GAIS who we managed to batter 4-0 on the night! A little bit of work with the club and its staff, with a raid of the transfer market and hopefully we will be challenging for one next season. Especially if we didn’t have that god awful start to the campaign..

Swedish Cup

There are still Swedish Cup matters though, and if you can remember we had a Quarter Final tie against Norrkoping:

..And we crashed out after an extra time goal. Didn’t really help that we went down to 10 men either, but I guess it can’t all be roses. We should have really won though (in my opinion) so I’ll be up for the new campaign next year where I hope that we can progress a little further in the competition!

I guess that’s it from me and Malmö, next update ill bring you the transfer embargo from the south of Sweden and give you a half season update. With any luck, it will be much better than the last one ;)

Anyway thanks for reading, comments are always welcome so stick ’em in the box.
