Hello everyone and welcome back to my Wrexham Football Manager story. We were anxious to get the season underway and prove to the board and the fans that promotion was indeed a real possibility.
Our opening game of the season was a trip to Crawley and it took a while for things to get going but as soon as Shane Williams found his confidence then things started to happen. A deftly touch to right inside forward Kevin Gall opened the scoring just before half time and a similar pass through to striker Andy Mangan produced a penalty which our lone front man hammered into the back of the net from the spot. New signing Lewis Emanuel who came on for Gall created a fine goal for himself after cutting inside from the right flank seven minutes from time. A good solid result to get us started.
Next up was our first home game of the season with the visit of Grimsby who had just been relegated from the Football League. We got off to a great start with Gall finding Mangan who neatly pushed the ball past the Grimsby keeper to give us the lead inside ten minutes. Mangan himself initiated a breakaway and the resulting cross was met spectacularly by the head of Lewis Emanuel to make it two –nil though unfortunately Emanuel was injured in the process. Grimsby went down to ten men just before the interval but try as we may we couldn’t take advantage of our superiority and had to settle for the two goal victory. Following the game the news was not good as Emanuel would be out for two to three months.
A trip to Gateshead was our following game and things got off to a bad start with the home side taking the lead in under a minute but we didn’t drop our heads and fought back to make it 1-1 after Williams through ball found Mangan and off he sprinted before finishing coolly into the corner of the net. Following the equalizer we couldn’t make any further progress and so had to settle for an away point.
The next three games were about as exciting as watching paint dry so I won’t bore you with the details. Below then is the complete results.
The positives out of these results are that we remain unbeaten, my 38 year old Jamaican defender Frank Sinclair finally headed into the net and my final signing of the summer Ismael Fofana scored on his debut though he really should have made it two goals!
