Wrexham: October 2010

Published on

Hello friends and welcome to my latest update from The Racecourse Ground,  home of Welsh side Wrexham.

Our first game of October was a trip to Wimbledon and we got off to a great start as Mathias Pogba put us two up inside 30 minutes. I forgot to press pause and missed both goals as the phone rang. I had switched to a 4-4-2 for this game as even though our form was good we still seemed to be having trouble with our passing. The change made a dramatic difference and even though we a conceded a goal we stayed the course and came away with a victory.

Next up was the visit of Mansfield to The Racecourse Ground. Pogba again put us into to lead sliding the ball under the keeper after 17 minutes. It took almost another hour before substitute David Brown smashed home the second with Lyskov completing the rout by heading in the third four minutes from time. I’m staying with the 4-4-2 for now.

We stayed at home to play 16th place Kettering so three points looked a certainty. A freak goal from a corner after only 9 minutes put the visitors ahead and try as we might a lack of creativity and finishing in the final third would be our downfall which brought our unbeaten start to an abrupt end.

Next up was a trip to York and we were looking to get back to winning ways. Striker Andy Morrell put us ahead after 15 minutes following a good run and cross by Adrian Cieslweicz though poor marking allowed for the home side to equalize ten minutes later. Although we had good passing and possesion it wasn’t until midaway through the second half that Neil Ashtons through ball finally broke the York defence and Pogba slipped the ball home. We were reduced to 10 men following the sending off of defender Moses Barnett but we held on for all three points.

We traveled to Manchester for our first cup game of the season against FC United in the Fourth Qualifying Round of The FA Cup. The bookies had us as clear favorites and we didn’t disappoint them with a brace apiece for Lyskov and Pogba who has now netted 8 goals in all competitions. Gilmour and Williams dominated the central midfield an were instrumental in creating all of the goals.

The final game of the month was away to Cambridge and we were looking to end October on a positive note. Veteran defender Frank Sinclair set up the first goal with a lovely through ball to Morrell who neatly placed it past the Cambridge keeper. His second came just after half time and in similar fashion with Shane Williams the provider on this occasion. Sinclair who was having a fabulous afternoon slotted home a third that being an easy tap in from a free kick. The home side did manage a consolation goal right at the end but we were by far the more dominant force on the day.

League Table

We ended the month top of the table with a nice little four point lead over Luton whom we face next month as well as an all Welsh clash with Newport County

Game of the Month: Cambridge v Wrexham

Fixtures

We were drawn at home to League 2 side Port Vale in the The FA Cup so I fancy our chances of moving on to the second round.

Thanks for reading.
