Hi all and welcome to another edition to my Hartlepool United story on Darren’s blog. He had just started the new season and after the first month we were currently in 10th position and I was hoping to progress from that position when we play a total of five games all in the league so this was the perfect opportunity to start moving up the table.
V Peterborough (a) 4th Sept 2010
The first game of September was a tricky match against newly demoted Peterborough from the Championship and like Plymouth in the previous month they would feel that they should have one of the two promotion spots.
The game started well with Hartlepool taking the lead when James Brown started his goal tally of for the season in his first start in the 29th minutes. We were pegged back 10 minutes later when Zakuani levelled the game up at 1-1. The match seemed to be ending in a draw up until the 88th minute when Peterborough gave a penalty away and we took advantage of this and we came away with all three points. Another talking point in this match was the sending off on Evan Horwood as I felt it was a bit harsh and that landed me with a warning from the FA.
V Swindon (h) 11th Sept 2010
After that good win we were now up against a Swindon side that had had a poor start to the season and they were struggling to pick up a win. I just hoped that we could take advantage of this and get another valuable three points.
This ended up to be quite an interesting game as you would think that at 0-0 the game was a bit of a bore draw but it was far from it with both sides having goals disallowed and clear-cut chances missed.
V Tranmere (a) 18th Sept 2010
We were on the road again this time to Liverpool to face Tranmere who like Swindon in the previous game they were struggling at the foot of the table. This was more understandable for Tranmere as that is where they usually finish.
Swindon and Tranmere were in similar positions in the league but it wasn’t a similar result as my Hartlepool players ran riot and ended up winning the game 5-1. Goals came from Chamberlain, Vuckic, a own goal from Welsh and Richie Humphreys who was now just 1 goal away from 50 career league goals.
V Charlton 25th Sept 2010
We now had the visit of Charlton to contend with and what was again going to be a tough match as Charlton were in the Premier League not so long ago but they have found it hard to get back up the league and are still in league 1.
Goals from Joe Keenan and James Brown ensured that I picked up another three points against a Charlton side that pretty much matched us for the whole 90 minutes. The difference was that we were able to put the ball in the back of the net.
V Notts Co 28th Sept 2010
We were starting to hit some real form and I was hoping that would continue into our next game and the final game of the month when we were on the road to Nottingham to face Notts County at Meadow Lane.
Much like August we finished the month of with a defeat in the league but this time it was against a poorer opposition. One goal was enough to separate the teams and it came as early as the 9th minute. In the end the better team ended up winning the match and I was left disappointed that we could not have an unbeaten month.
September Results
With 10 points won out of 15 I was satisfied with this the performances over the last month and that this would be the start of a good run in form that would see me move up that table into the play-off places.
Table
We had moved into 6th place and into the elusive play-off places. This was where I wanted to be at the end of the season. Huddersfield had continued their excellent start to the season and they would be the team to beat.
