Just a quick update about what happened elsewhere in the football world at the end of last season. First of all the Awards:
As you can see the World Player of the year was dominated by players from La Liga, but they shared dominance in the World Team of the year with the premier league. There’s a surprise place on the bench for Gareth Bale as well.
Next to England
Arsenal of all teams topped the table. And the top 4 was the same as last season. However, some managers paid the price for not delivering.
Man City’s board clearly angry about another year without Champions League football got rid of Mancini and Liverpools new owner disappointed with a lack of European football all together got rid of Roy Hodgson to bring in his own man. As it happens, Liverpool got Mancini himself at Anfield whilst Man City just promoted youth coach Jim Cassell.
In a shock result, Leicester City won the FA Cup, beating Everton in the final after getting past Manchester United in the Semi’s, Becoming the first team to win the FA Cup from outside the top flight since West Ham in 1980.
Arsenal won the Champions league in extra time against Real Madrid, Arsene Wenger finally getting the trophy that had eluded him for so long.
Perhaps another reason Roberto Mancini lost his job. Losing the Europa league final in extra time to Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona topped La Liga this season. Perhaps the suprises in this league were Villarreal and Sevilla getting a disappointing mid table performance and Almeria grabbing a Europa league place.
In a shock Result it was Napoli who grabbed Serie A this season, pushing aside the likes of AC Milan and Juventus whilst Rafael Benitez’s Inter didn’t even qualify for Europe.
The only other shock in the top European leagues this season was FC Groningen topping the Eredivisie.
