Cambridge United: The Season Begins

Published on

Hello everyone and welcome back to a much delayed update from my Cambridge United story. In fact I hadn’t loaded up the game for over a week then when I did I played on through until the end of October. However rather than bore you with three months worth of action this post will be just about August. The other two months will be tomorrow.

Our first fixture of the season saw us travel to Cardiff who took the lead following a dreadful mistake by Scott Wootten as he got caught in possession of the ball just on the 18 yard line. He made up for it with a powerful header on the hour from a Josh Dawkin corner that was soon followed by a goal from substitute Borja Baston. Jacob Walcott added a third to complete the victory three minutes from time.

The next game saw a comfortable 2-0 win in the League Cup at Dagenham with a debut goal for AMC Julien Gorius and another for Baston who again came on as sub.

Our home opener featured the visit of West Brom who had just been relegated form the Premier League and were looking for a quick trip back there as they laid siege to our goal for 69 minutes. Then entered Borja Baston whose first touch of the ball was a cheeky little lob over the West Brom keeper and it was 1-0. That totally demoralized the visitors and we went on to take all three points.

It was back to Wales for our next game this time against Swansea in a match that was played at a prolific pace, full of close calls but sadly lacked on quality I front of the net. I was happy with an away point but felt we could have done much better.

It was time for our League Cup Second Round game in which we had been draw away to Everton. I didn’t really fancy our chances and so I sent out a somewhat reserve eleven saving our better players for league action. The supporting cast put on a good show though Everton were really never under any great pressure and I thought we did well to hold the Premier League side to a single goal.

The last game of the month and it was back to the Abbey Stadium where a capacity crowd of 8,600 saw Scott Wootten head us into the lead from a corner after 14 minutes. It took a magical piece of footwork from Davide Petrucci to add a second 10 minutes from time though Huddersfield never really caused us any serious problems. Shane Williams picked up a knock and will be out for the next four weeks.

League Table

So we got off to a much better start than I anticipated though of course it’s very early days so I don’t want to get too excited.

Transfers

I came across this young Argentine defender who can play both sides of the field and to my surprise I was able to get him on loan for the season. Orellana looks quite talented in my humble opinion.

Y2G

I had a couple of players in mind to show you but only manage to secure the signature of one of them at that came at a price as well. Tomi Martikainen joins us from Finnish club FC Lahti at a cost of £130,000 but in the long run I think he will be well worth it and my scouts believe he has tremendous potential.

That completes this update so thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you all had a good day.
