Hello everyone and welcome back to the finale of season two with Cambridge United. We left off last time with Cambridge dropping down to second place and tying a vital home game with Southend who are just three points behind in third spot. With just five games left let’s see how the season ended…
The first game of April saw us travel to Bury and after a very drab and uneventful first half defender Scott Wootten headed in the opening goal after 66 minutes. Out of nowhere Bury created an equalizer with eleven minutes remaining and with the fans anxiously looking at their watches Conor Newton found Shane Williams completely unmarked at the edge of the area and his neatly placed shot beat the Bury keeper and was enough to snatch all the points. It was then the light went on in my head and I realized that THREE TEAMS get automatically promoted and Shane Williams had just sent us up into League One!!!
As you can see the Cambridge board were absolutely thrilled that we had been promoted once again.
With the step up to League One now a certainty here’s how the rest of the results went to close out the season.
League Two Final Table
Colchester kept their commanding lead at the top and we came in a very respectable second place. One of my biggest concerns for next season though is reducing the «goals against» column as I feel 52 is quite high
Scott Wootten lead the field as the top player with the highest average rating but I was really pleased to see Moore, Fofana and Walcott all up there who each have important roles in my left flank tactic.
Young Turkish striker Nadir Ciftci turned out to be our top scorer for the season with 19 goals from 30 appearances which is not too bad at all and I’m pretty sure I’ll be keeping him on for next season. Here’s is profile once more.
The last piece of information for this update is Cambridge’s finances that over the last 12 months have continued to improve. I’ve managed to stay almost £2,000 under my salary budget and have not even touched any of the transfer budget though I’m wondering if that million quid will still be there in the summer?
Well that completes the season and thanks very much for reading this somewhat shorter post today. Hope everyone has a great weekend and enjoy’s this Cup Final Saturday.
