This FM 2012 player profile of James Rodriguez shows one of the best wingers FM 2012 has to offer. He starts the game favouring an AMC position but I think Rodriguez would be best deployed from the left wing as an inside forward. This kid develops nicely to have great pace, dribbling, crossing and flair all of which are vital. But it’s in this wonderkids all round game that you have a star and at just £19 million I think Rodriguez is a great buy. His asking price can even drop so it may be worth waiting a season or so to see what happens.

Best buy rating: 9/10

Future world star right here, at his age Di Maria was still warming the bench at Benfica.
This is not a random comparison, they are alike in many aspects: Pace, dribbling, cutting inside, etc.

I too like Rodriguez a lot, if he’s available for less than £15 million in anyones save I’d call it a bargain.

      • comment avatar EzronJames March 7, 2013

Bought him for £2m on my save with Nottingham forest, got them promoted in my first season and are lying 7 points clear at the top of the league in the premiership. He’s a beast of a player.

        • comment avatar Darren Smith March 7, 2013

Sounds like a good signing, surprised he’d move to Nottm in the first few seasons.

  • comment avatar p December 28, 2011

if you can see the profile of yannis tafer. the kid is a scoring machine in my safe for OL im m ight sell belfodil and buy tafer to join damiao ayew and niang

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 28, 2011

He does look good at the start but hasn’t developed to the same level as Torres, Fierro, Kadlec etc etc…if I see a better future profile I’ll do one though.

    ok ty :)

For AML, who would you choose? Muniain, Yarmolenko or Rodriguez? Cheers :)

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 28, 2011

Good question, it depends what you’re after really. If you need instant impact and don’t plan on having this player past 8 seasons then sign Yarmolenko or Rodriguez (both very similar ability wise so go for the cheaper, or by age if that helps) As for Muniain you may need to wait a few seasons to see him develop so if you can’t wait then that rules him out….my personal opinion, I’ve had a craving for Yarmolenko since finding him.

      • comment avatar RedDevil December 28, 2011

        Thanks mate :)

  • comment avatar RedDevil December 28, 2011

Can you please tell me how Juan Iturbe develops through the years? Would be very greatful lad :D

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 29, 2011

I would keep your money in your pocket on that one mate. Some players don’t get game time and its tough to tell if that is the underlining problem for their development. But in my game Iturbe really is bad.

      • comment avatar sikava May 9, 2012

In my Porto save the reports say that he has potential to be as good as Hulk, and has a 4.5 star potential rating. I can imagine him having a hard time getting playtime in the first team if managed by the computer, but I’m treating him just as I do with Joel Valencia, and hopefully he will develop fine. Right now he’s on a loan as a valuable first team player.

I’m just in my second season right now, so it’s too soon to tell. But I’ll try to get you some screenshots in a couple of seasons if everything pans out.

        • comment avatar sikava May 9, 2012

          Iturbe, that is!

  • comment avatar LHn December 29, 2011

Could you check Santiago Arias? :)

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 29, 2011

Sorry I cannot find him on my save.

  • comment avatar Paul December 31, 2011

He Should get a 9.5/10, just for the fact that in most games i’ve started his asking price wasn’t 19M£ but 10M€, so rouhgly 8-9M£

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 31, 2011

I can only go off what I personally see and in two of my saves that I bid for him in the beginning on the latest patch he is around £19 million. However, you can get him cheaper later in the game and if developed properly he can be brilliant so I have changed his rating to 9/10.

For Liverpool I bought this guy for 6.5 million in my second season and wow, he’s been phenomenal, took a while to break into my first team but now he’s one of the best players in the world! For a combined 16.5 million Willian and Rodriguez are simply amazing.

    • comment avatar Darren Smith February 13, 2012

Now that is how to spend your cash, those two at that rate is sensational.

    • comment avatar Alex April 13, 2012

I just found out James Rodriguez was transfer listed at an asking price of 4.1 million. Just waiting if he wants to sign. Very excited!

    • comment avatar Darren Smith April 10, 2012

Rodriguez would be a bargain at that!!

      • comment avatar marc August 7, 2012

I got him for 2 mil 3rd season, also Lucas Moura for 8.5 mil in same season from city

  • comment avatar Alex April 13, 2012

I manage Porto n in year 2015 and have James worth £25m…. he had 31 assist for me in my 1st season

  • comment avatar Timinho94 April 19, 2012

@Harper O’Keeffe I really hope he wants to sign at your club! In my first season at AS Roma he was one of my best players! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to sign him in the summer:(. However the screenshot of Rodriguez in the future disappoints me a little for he got these statistics at my club after only 1 year of training!

  • comment avatar Hamish April 22, 2012

    I signed him for 2.5 mil 1 word…. BEAST

  • comment avatar chris breezy April 25, 2012

    how do you rate your top five wonderkids….mine is 1)gotze 2)fierro 3)niang 4)erick torres and 5) j.rodriguez…

    • comment avatar Darren Smith April 25, 2012

Mine would be very similar to yours but replacing Niang and Rodriguez with Kara and Kovacic.

  • comment avatar Redle May 4, 2012

Traded him on Valencia om january’s window, nice

  • comment avatar Chelseaceltics May 12, 2012

Hi Darren, i was wondering, y not set j. rodriguez as a AML (winger-attack)? he has great dribbling and crossing skills. Plus the speed, would it b btr as a winger or still as a inside forward?

    • comment avatar Darren Smith May 12, 2012

It depends purely on your tactic really, he would play best in either role depending on your formation, style of play and many other factors…I personally like inside forwards and he seems very capable in front of goal, not to mention inside forwards still cross the ball too. That is where most gamers go wrong though, they spend too much time changing the tactic to suit their new signings when you should adapt or buy the right player to suit your tactic.

      • comment avatar Le Dzung May 25, 2012

hehe. love your line above. Yeah! james can cut inside, try killer ball, crossing, long blasting ball in the back of the net or beat the Keeper on a one-on-one situation. My Sunderland has him on left wing and Weiss on right wing. Both are not inverted strong foot but still cutting in really well.

        • comment avatar Darren Smith May 25, 2012

I agree, like mentioned just because they cut inside doesn’t limit them to shooting alone, sometimes they cut inside then weave back out to lose their man and get a cross off.

  • comment avatar Chelseaceltics May 12, 2012

oh but if he is an inside forward, shouldn’t he be played on the right side? if i am nt wrong, his preferred foot is the left so he should be played as an inside forward on the left? just like angel di maria on the right side (since he is stronger with his left foot) in real life

    • comment avatar Darren Smith May 12, 2012

To be honest I have had more success with inside forwards playing in the same side as their best foot so it varies again on the gamer and what they expect from the player I guess.

      • comment avatar Chelseaceltics May 12, 2012

i see. Thanks for the advice and this website! Cheers!

  • comment avatar Tito May 14, 2012

James is a great attacking midfielder, use him in right wing as inside forward, so he usually cut inside an take a long shoot but he needs some improvements in his mentality atributtes

    • comment avatar Darren Smith May 14, 2012

I think he could play either side with different roles, seems fairly versatile.

  • comment avatar Dave Munch May 15, 2012

I got him at £6m in my liverpool save and my oh my, he is a beast.

  • comment avatar gavin May 30, 2012

I’ve tried inside fwd on the left but it doesn’t work since he can’t cut inside because his right foot is very weak, and he can’t play on the right too!! So how to make get the best from him, I don’t fancy using wingers because I want my wide player to cut inside to support my striker.

    • comment avatar Darren Smith May 30, 2012

If you can’t make him work then its probably because you’re not giving him enough time…most quality wingers like Rodriguez will play well as inside forward but they need at least a few months to fully work out the position, some take longer.

  • comment avatar anon June 24, 2012

Got him for 2,9 million on my Arsenal save, absolutely insane.

    • comment avatar Darren Smith June 24, 2012

Assume that must have been at least well into the first season, very good price.

  • comment avatar Yee September 1, 2012

  • comment avatar J.D December 15, 2012

Who do u think is better between Gaitan and James Rodriguez?

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 15, 2012

Gaitan at the very start but then Rodriguez after a season or so.

  • comment avatar euan December 20, 2012

Any idea what he is available for in FM 13 ?

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 20, 2012

No, I’ve never signed him. I’d just suggest bidding to find out.
