Jack Butland’s career history until 2020

Jack Butland is one of my favorite goalkeepers in FM12. He will never be as good as David De Gea, Courtois or Ter Stegen but 2 of those 3 are virtually impossible to prize away from their clubs and to get Ter Stegen your going to have to stump up a big fee 0f £20m, Butland costs a tenth of that and can do the job just as well. He starts off as a Carling cup/bit part player and I would suggest waiting until he is 21 0r 22, when he does turn into a solid top 4 player and after another 2 years or so he will be a very, very good goalkeeper, as seen above. Not often do SI give us the opportunity to buy a British player for such a modest fee, but here they have and i would strongly suggest taking the opportunity to get him in your team. He is unlikely to make many mistakes and is a great shot stopper, which is why he is amongst my favorite goalkeepers. In my opinion, he is an outstanding signing.

Best buy rating: 8.5/10

A very talented keeper in real life and one I seriously hope SI improve for FM13 as in FM12 I don’t think they rate him highly enough.

I think he will be a star for England, and i would like to think SI come to that conclusion aswell and he could be really good in FM13.

    Looks promising!

However, I found that Joe Lewis and Alex Smithies are also very good and rather cheap options. In Lewis I have a reliable back up for Neuer in my Bayern save and he never dissapointed me.

I have Smithies in my Torino save and after a shaky start – new language, more demanding championship – he helped my side to the quarter finals of Europa league and a third place in Serie A (media prediction: 19th and relegation). Smithies is very well rounded and reliable and would be, in my opinion, a better option on a shorter-term. Btw, any of you know if he’s also good in RL?

I would say Butland is a good bit ahead of these two after a few seasons.

From what i have seen of Smithies IRL (which isn’t that much) he isn’t great. He may well turn out to be a Premier League goalkeeper but I don’t get the impression he will be world class.
