Douglas Costa’s career history until 2019

This FM 2012 player profile of Douglas Costa shows two sides to the talented playmaker. Costa starts the game with brilliant attacking and technical attributes, but as the game goes on he seems to mutate somewhat until 2016 where he looks more like an all rounder as opposed to technical specialist. I would suggest that this is due to clubs trying to make him a rounded midfielder. This suggests that you can do the same or just develop his playmaking skills. If you play an advanced playmaker as a central midfielder his attributes will start to change over time. I think £19 million is a good investment for what Costa is at the start of the game and what you can develop him into. When playing against Costa he has scored incredible goals and been nothing short of a menace so a must buy for me but only if you have the cash of course.

Best buy rating: 8.5/10

Hi Darren, will the same thing happend if i play Ganso on the CM, as a deep laying playmaker with attack? That his stats will begin to decrease over time as well. He have a dark green spot as CM, on the position board.

    • comment avatar Darren Smith November 3, 2011

Basically Costa should have improved his game in different areas to suit the new role while his old strengths started to weaken as a result…but for some reason this didn’t happen. I’d recommend playing Ganso as an advanced playmaker with attack duty to get the best out of him, but he shouldn’t decline too much as deep lying, you’ll probably see his tackling improve while his dribbling declines, stuff like that.

I bought him for 10M at game start. And now playing him as AMR (inside forward), it seems that his attributes are growing, of course, better than your screenshot, passing now 16, pace 15, acc 16, dribbing 17, tech 17…
So for me, 7.5/10 is a bit low for him, maybe 8 or 8.5

    • comment avatar Darren Smith November 9, 2011

Thanks for the info mate, I gave him a safe 7.5/10 because I haven’t signed him yet and not too sure about his development but seems better than my future save suggests going by your info.

Saw this…definately worth the 9 you gave him in the end…He just scored 3 wonders against united in his debut…He went down for a bit, but raced back up vs arsenal…seems to score wonders vs big teams…I like that.

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 9, 2011

Yeah when I did this profile originally I had a bad future profile to go off and knew it. That is why I explained the lack of football and poor training may have led to his poor development. This guy can be huge against the big teams, I’m a fan too. Just glad I found a great example for his future profile.

  • comment avatar p December 24, 2011

does he play well in amr?

  • comment avatar p December 24, 2011

what should i do sgin douglas and adpat him to amr or buy gotze and adapt hazard to amr ?

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 24, 2011

I would say you’d be best off adapting Douglas Costa to AMR but then again Gotze is very tempting.

  • comment avatar p December 24, 2011

because i have alerdy hazard and i just selled gervinho for 22 milion to OM but 60 milion for gotze isn´t much ?

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 24, 2011

Well it depends on your in game philosophy but if you’re not bothered about cash then you should decide on what you want…either too players that can dribble past anyone in Hazard and Gotze, or a mixture adding Costa who can take a set piece and hit the ball from almost anywhere.

  • comment avatar p December 24, 2011

andre schurle ? is he a nice player ? which amr do yuou recommend ?

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 24, 2011

Weiss!!! But if not then you had it right the first time with either Costa or Gotze to then swap Hazard onto the right.

  • comment avatar p December 24, 2011

i just need or a good aml or amr im training arsenal and i have 57 M to spent.

    • comment avatar Darren Smith December 24, 2011

Yeah he’d be a good choice, real all rounder.

  • comment avatar p December 24, 2011

and now i will put hazard in amr and its done mi team for this season

  • comment avatar Heresy January 28, 2012

I love the versatility this player. Even if he will never be a key player for me, he gets his apps because I’m able to place him anywhere i want. He can play as an attacking midfielder, a midfielder and is also deadly on the wings. It’s like you never have to worry about injuries to key midfielders when this guy is around. He can step up and own.

As much as he can pass and cross, he’s not the best playmaker. Don’t get me wrong, he’s very good but his decisions and concentration attribute never goes up to any acceptable level. Meaning – he can pass but he’s not very wise about picking the perfect opportunities. He won’t have many top quality assists but he’s definitely the next best thing for only 13M Euro. A must buy for teams without good free kick takers (like arsenal for example).

    • comment avatar Darren Smith January 28, 2012

Yeah he is very versatile and that is important, but I think his set pieces and long range shooting ability alone warrant a bid. Worth buying for sure.

  • comment avatar Arun Sharma January 28, 2012

Costa did the job for me in and behind the Striker, tried him in CM with Rodwell, don’t get the best of him. Bangs of assist but defo one for the Big games

  • comment avatar Tiberiu April 11, 2012

can Douglas Costa play on left wing with winger support move into channels?

    • comment avatar Darren Smith April 11, 2012

I guess he could but not his best role. I’d prefer inside forward.

  • comment avatar Heresy April 18, 2012

In my Arsenal save I’ve signed Costa just so that Man City wouldn’t get him :P I didn’t really think about what possition to play him at. Tried both wings and, as always, solid but not mindblowing. The revelation came when Sigurdsson’s had enough and needed a rest just when my midfield rotation got injured. Assigned the brazilian to CM (attack) and allowed him to shoot from the distance often. There he really started to shine! He scored a screamer every 2-3 matches, still in my first saeason and against the likes of Chelsea and Man Utd!

One thing that bothered me though was not utilising his dribbling and crossing much. So I started training him to hug the line and dribble down the right side and the effects were beyond my expectations. Him overlapping my winger meant I had two strikers instead of 1 (playing the 4-5-1 ofc). He was my number 2 assistant, with 19 assists in 32 games + 14 goals from fee kicks and long range.

Basically I had and overlapping winger for counters and fast action and a cannon to shoot from range when the action was slow. If someone thinks of a way to get even more out of this lad, please let me know :)

He can be a class act, I can’t comment on how to get the most from him as I have just admired Costa’s talent from the opponents bench. But he does seem most dangerous when cutting inside so he can fire off killer shots.

  • comment avatar Jorge May 3, 2012

Douglas Costa is my liverpool left winger, but also an advanced midlefilder or right winger when necessary, simply the player of the year for liverpool 2013/2014, he has deadly free kicks, and also tries lots of long shots and crosses to Carrol’s head. on my save his speed stats has improved, and in my opinion he is much better than this one. by the way, if you use him as a winger (his best role) no matter which side you use him, just play him as an inside forward, he will make it.

    • comment avatar Darren Smith May 3, 2012

Certainly seems like an assist and goal machine, those technical attributes are just too good not to guarantee success.

  • comment avatar u8 May 29, 2012

Bought Costa for £6.5m-plus add ons- and he has turned into one of the best players in the world. I kept him training mostly technical attributes. By doing this his: dribbling is 20; flair 19; passing 16, etc. Due to my possession football- and my solid central mids- he is given a free role along with Hazard and wreaks absolute havoc. He was shortlisted for world player of the year.

    • comment avatar Darren Smith May 29, 2012

He can certainly become a very dangerous playmaker with excellent technical attributes.

  • comment avatar Joeyboy June 11, 2012

Who would you prefer to have out of Hulk and Douglas Costa playing as an Inside Forward at AMR?

    • comment avatar Darren Smith June 11, 2012

It depends on what you look for, I’d personally prefer the pace and beastly skill of Hulk, but if I was more technically orientated and needed a set piece specialist then Costa would be my pick.

  • comment avatar chris June 25, 2012

douglas costa is a definite purchace for every team in my opinion!!!i bought him in my save with liverpool and i won the championship with av.rating 8.07!!!this guy is amazing!!!the most important…..NEVER pick up injuries!!!

    • comment avatar Darren Smith June 25, 2012

I must admit he’s a player I fear coming up against, you just cross your fingers that he won’t find space to fire a shot off.

  • comment avatar Anonimous October 11, 2012

I use Douglas Costa as AML winger support and Willian AMR winger support with a poacher and im very satisfied with them

  • comment avatar neramagico November 22, 2012
